Book Broadband Studies of Seismic Sources at Regional and Teleseismic Distances Using Advanced Time Series Analysis Methods

Download or read book Broadband Studies of Seismic Sources at Regional and Teleseismic Distances Using Advanced Time Series Analysis Methods written by Z. A. Der and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a new theory and methodologies for source studies and the results of applications of various time series analysis methods to seismological analyses of interest in nuclear monitoring. Applying the algorithms and ideas of multi-channel deconvolution to regional Pn and Lg arrivals showed that the concept of signal factorability, decomposition of seismogram spectra into site and source factors, is valid for such data. This enables one to investigate various possible applications using inter-event and inter-sensor transfer functions to detect variations in the locations, source mechanisms, source time functions and azimuths of regional sources. Such techniques make use of the details of regional waveforms and circumvent the problems associated with the extreme variability and unpredictability of regional waveforms and the virtual impossibility of computing realistic Greens's functions theoretically. Keywords: Seismic data/arrays; Discrimination; Sources; Array processing. (edc).

Book Regional Studies with Broadband Data

Download or read book Regional Studies with Broadband Data written by Thomas V. McEvilly and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general objective of this research supported by this grant has been a better definition of the explosion and earthquake source processes. Love and Rayleigh wave group velocities for the Tibetan Plateau have been used to infer crustal velocities for that region. Results include a crustal thickness of 74 km, a prominent low velocity zone for shear waves in the depth range 24-34 km, and a uniformly high shear wave velocity of 3.88 km/sec in the lower 40 km of the crust. The low velocity zone can best be interpreted in terms of a zone of elevated pore pressure, while the high velocity in the lower crust and upper mantle imply the presence of usually low temperatures in the depth range of 50-100 km. Such results are consistent with the hypothesis of large-scale underthrusting of the Indian continent. In recent years the research has moved toward the detailed study of source mechanisms of earthquakes and explosions with broadband data. Keywords: Nuclear explosion; Seismic data; Surface waves; Source mechanisms.

Book Earthquake Data in Engineering Seismology

Download or read book Earthquake Data in Engineering Seismology written by Sinan Akkar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses current activities in strong-motion networks around the globe, covering issues related to designing, maintaining and disseminating information from these arrays. The book is divided into three principal sections. The first section includes recent developments in regional and global ground-motion predictive models. It presents discussions on the similarities and differences of ground motion estimations from these models and their application to design spectra as well as other novel procedures for predicting engineering parameters in seismic regions with sparse data. The second section introduces topics about the particular methodologies being implemented in the recently established global and regional strong-motion databanks in Europe to maintain and disseminate the archived accelerometric data. The final section describes major strong-motion arrays around the world and their historical developments. The last three chapters of this section introduce projects carried out within the context of arrays deployed for seismic risk studies in metropolitan areas. Audience: This timely book will be of particular interest for researchers who use accelerometric data extensively to conduct studies in earthquake engineering and engineering seismology.

Book Routine Data Processing in Earthquake Seismology

Download or read book Routine Data Processing in Earthquake Seismology written by Jens Havskov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to get a practical understanding of the most common processing techniques in earthquake seismology. The book deals with manual methods and computer assisted methods. Each topic will be introduced with the basic theory followed by practical examples and exercises. There are manual exercises entirely based on the printed material of the book, as well as computer exercises based on public domain software. Most exercises are computer based. The software used, as well as all test data are available from http://extras.springer.com. This book is intended for everyone processing earthquake data, both in the observatory routine and in connection with research. Using the exercises, the book can also be used as a basis for university courses in earthquake processing. Since the main emphasis is on processing, the theory will only be dealt with to the extent needed to understand the processing steps, however references will be given to where more extensive explanations can be found. Includes: • Exercises • Test data • Public domain software (SEISAN) available from http://extras.springer.com

Download or read book Assessing the Nation s Earthquakes written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Seismology. Panel on Regional Networks and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1990 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the 50 regional seismic networks funded by various federal, state, and private sources that operate autonomously in the United States. Most have aging equipment and suffer from declining sources of operating funds. Yet, they provide valuable scientific data as well as information about seismicity and earthquakes around their locales. The volume describes the advent of the new National Seismic Network, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey. The National Seismic Network provides a unique opportunity to integrate the regional networks with the national network. This system will preserve the valuable work of the regional networks and enhance the capabilities of the national network.

Book AASERT 94 Broadband Signal Enhancement of Seismic Array Data Application to Long Period Surface Waves and High Frequency Wavefields

Download or read book AASERT 94 Broadband Signal Enhancement of Seismic Array Data Application to Long Period Surface Waves and High Frequency Wavefields written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research training activities started by identifying and picking seismic events from various broadband arrays and networks. The next step was to associate these events with existing catalog locations to build databases of local, regional and teleseismic events which are being used in this research project as well as other seismic verification projects at our institute and also other universities. The data processing aspects included learning to use the CSS 3.0 database format to allow the management of datasets with thousands of events. The seismic processing included identification of local, regional, and teleseismic phases which are essential for seismic discrimination research. This involved learning the TCLITK language and the application of this knowledge to provide a graphical user interface to build CSS databases. This program is being developed to support field deployments of seismic stations which will ensure the proper documentation of instrument responses, site locations, and calibration parameters. In addition, this software has been used to support deployments of the Wyoming portable broadband seismic and infrasonic experiments, and with all aspects of data assembly, data processing, data distribution to the research community.
