Book Holding Broadband Providers to Account

Download or read book Holding Broadband Providers to Account written by Jeremy Mark Malcolm and published by Consumers International. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet is an empowering force for the world's consumers, connecting them with their families, governments, communities and markets both nearby and far. Broadband access is needed for them to fully take advantage of all that the Internet offers. As such, strong consumer protection for consumers of broadband services is vital, not only to enjoy the Internet itself, but to fully participate in the many other areas of modern life to which it connects them. Consumer organisations have a vital role to play in promoting high consumer protection standards for broadband providers, and in holding them to account when they fall short. This manual is designed as a primer for consumer advocates wishing to enter the battle for fair and high quality broadband services, but uncertain about where to start. It begins with an overview of the practice of consumer advocacy, including simple guidelines for effective campaigning with particular attention to key areas such as communications and partnerships. It moves on to explain the technical and policy issues that surround broadband services, including "traditional" consumer protection issues such as unfair contract terms and complaint handling, but also broader issues such as privacy and network neutrality. Finally the manual outlines three campaign ideas, responding to problems that CI members uncovered through research conducted in 2011. These are a "Broadband Disclosure Statement" to address the opacity of broadband contract terms, a "Don't Lock Me In!" campaign against providers who stop consumers from shopping around for the best deal, and a campaign to provide broadband consumers with better independent resolution services. Included are template resources from which members can "cut and paste" for use in their own campaigns, leading we hope to concrete improvements in the quality and fairness of broadband services for consumers around the world.

This book was released on 2018-10-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the Privacy of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Protecting the Privacy of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 In this document, the Federal Communications Commission (Commission) adopts final rules based on public comments applying the privacy requirements of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, to broadband Internet access service (BIAS) and other telecommunications services. In adopting these rules the Commission implements the statutory requirement that telecommunications carriers protect the confidentiality of customer proprietary information. The privacy framework in these rules focuses on transparency, choice, and data security, and provides heightened protection for sensitive customer information, consistent with customer expectations. The rules require carriers to provide privacy notices that clearly and accurately inform customers; obtain opt-in or opt-out customer approval to use and share sensitive or non-sensitive customer proprietary information, respectively; take reasonable measures to secure customer proprietary information; provide notification to customers, the Commission, and law enforcement in the event of data breaches that could result in harm; not condition provision of service on the surrender of privacy rights; and provide heightened notice and obtain affirmative consent when offering financial incentives in exchange for the right to use a customer's confidential information. The Commission also revises its current telecommunications privacy rules to harmonize today's privacy rules for all telecommunications carriers, and provides a tailored exemption from these rules for enterprise customers of telecommunications services other than BIAS. This book contains: - The complete text of the Protecting the Privacy of Customers of Broadband and Other Telecommunications Services (US Federal Communications Commission Regulation) (FCC) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Consumer Privacy

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Consumer Privacy written by Evan Selinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Businesses are rushing to collect personal data to fuel surging demand. Data enthusiasts claim personal information that's obtained from the commercial internet, including mobile platforms, social networks, cloud computing, and connected devices, will unlock path-breaking innovation, including advanced data security. By contrast, regulators and activists contend that corporate data practices too often disempower consumers by creating privacy harms and related problems. As the Internet of Things matures and facial recognition, predictive analytics, big data, and wearable tracking grow in power, scale, and scope, a controversial ecosystem will exacerbate the acrimony over commercial data capture and analysis. The only productive way forward is to get a grip on the key problems right now and change the conversation. That's exactly what Jules Polonetsky, Omer Tene, and Evan Selinger do. They bring together diverse views from leading academics, business leaders, and policymakers to discuss the opportunities and challenges of the new data economy.
