Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites 7 written by A M Brandt and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium in Brittle Matrix Composites October 13-15, 2003 covers a wide spectrum of topics including cement based composites, ceramic composites and brittle polymer matrix composites. In the papers various topics and issues are considered such as: analytical and numerical studies related to the design of composites, prediction of behaviour and verification of strength and stability, testing methods, manufacturing processes and repair, environmental effects and durability assessment. The present volume of 55 papers proves that there are still many problems in the field of brittle matrix composites deserving theoretical and experimental investigations and that new solutions to these problems are needed for practical application in civil engineering, industrial structures, machinery and other domains.

Book Brittle Matrix Composites

Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites written by Andrzej M Brandt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at Euromech 204 'Structure and Crack Propagation in Brittle Matrix Composite Materials' held at Jablonna, Poland, from 12 to 15 November 1985. The Colloquium was organised and sponsored by The Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee (Euromech). The Euromech Committee is affiliated to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUT AM). IUT AM was organised early in the 1920s with the First Congress being held in Delft in 1924. The Euromech Colloquia were initiated some 20 years later with the intention of promoting European co-operation in the Mechanical Engineering Sciences. As the title implies, the Colloquium addressed a variety of problems associated with three main groups of materials, namely: high-strength composites, ceramics and cement-based materials, the common theme in each case being the relative brittleness of the matrix material. The problems considered ranged from fracture processes peculiar to such materials to projected design guidelines which will ensure their safe operation under a variety of conditions. Participants from thirteen countries (Czechoslovakia, France, FRG, GDR, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, UK, and USSR) contributed to the success of this event. For ease of reference, the 38 papers presented at the Colloquium have been subdivided into six distinct sections, viz. General Problems and Methods, Cracking in Ceramics, Fracture of Polymer Composites, Crack ing in Cement Based Composites, Fracture of Fibre Reinforced Cements and Fracture Mechanics of Concretes.

Book Fracture and Fatigue

Download or read book Fracture and Fatigue written by Lawrence J. Broutman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite Materials, Volume 5: Fracture and Fatigue covers the concepts, theories, and experiments on fracture and fatigue behavior of composite materials. The book discusses the fracture of particulate composites, including metal, polymer, and ceramic matrices; relates micromechanics effects to composite strength; and summarizes the various theories relating constituent properties and microstructure to fracture. The text also describes differing theories regarding the strength and fracture of composites; and the theory and experiment relating to time-dependent fracture covering both long-term as well as dynamic fracture. The fatigue of both polymer- and metal-matrix composites and the factors influencing the toughness of both brittle and ductile matrix composites are also considered. Design engineers, materials scientist, materials engineers, and metallurgists will find the book useful.

Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites written by Kim Van Tittelboom and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials due to its excellent mechanical properties and relatively low cost. However, concrete is prone to crack formation. These cracks do not impair the structural integrity, but they endanger the durability of the structure as aggressive liquids and gasses may enter via these cracks and cause degradation. Therefore, crack repair is needed but these repair works increase the cost of concrete structures by 50 % as they are labour intensive and because the structure becomes in disuse during repair. Accordingly, in this research it was investigated whether cementitious materials can be modified so that cracks heal themselves. Therefore, healing agents were encapsulated by brittle capsules and embedded inside the cementitious matrix in the zones where cracks were expected. When the matrix starts cracking, the capsules break and release their content, leading to crack repair. Water absorption measurements were performed to evaluate the healing efficiency. The amount of absorbed water was determined by gravimetrical measurements and visualized by X-ray radiography. When samples with untreated cracks were placed with their cracked surface in a water reservoir, it was noticed from the radiographs that water penetrated very fast into the cracks. For samples with self-healing properties no water entered into the cracks. Moreover, even in the zone alongside the crack no water entry was noticed. Therefore, it can be concluded that self-healing of concrete cracks can be used to prevent the ingress of liquids and to prevent subsequent damage to the matrix.

Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites written by Francisco Montero and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper a model is presented to simulate fracture of fibre reinforced cement based materials. The model is based on a lattice-type fracture model. Fibres are explicitly implemented as separate elements connected to the cement matrix via special interface elements. With the model multiple cracking and ductile global behaviour are simulated of the composite material. Variables in the model are the fibre dimensions and properties, the fibre volume in the composite, the bond behaviour of fibres and matrix and the cement matrix properties. These properties are obtained by testing, which will be described in the paper. The model is used as a design tool for creating fibre cement based composites with any desired mechanical behaviour.

Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites written by Mònica Ardanuy and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the evaluation of the durability to wet-dry cycling exposure of cement composites reinforced with nanofibrillated cellulose comparing the results with composites reinforced with conventional cellulose fibres at the micro-scale level has been performed. For this purpose, cement mortar composites reinforced with cellulose fibres from conventional sisal pulp and cellulose nanofibres prepared by the application of a high intensity refining process have been prepared. The mechanical performance of the composites prepared was tested after 7 days of cure treatment and after 5 wet-dry cycles. The cement mortar composites reinforced with the nanofibrillated cellulose exhibited higher flexural strenght and flexural modulus but lower values of fracture energy than the ones reinforced with the conventional sisal fibres. No significant improvements of the durability were found for the composites prepared with nanofibrillated cellulose.
