Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain in Arms This is not a war for the possession of a town, a province, or a colony; we are battling for freedom, for the existence of our race. There is now but one great issue at stake, and that is to decide which of the two hostile groups shall survive and carry on its history through the ages. It is a terrible struggle for life or death, and to it each nation is bringing its last ounce of treasure, its last drop of blood. Millions upon millions are being swallowed up and lost. When the final signature comes to be written at the foot of the treaty of peace, what will be left of Europe as once we knew it? Think of the immeasurable devastation! Of the countless graves! What reck our soldiers? The war has claimed our children; let it take our children's children. We will grudge them not. We will give, and give freely, of our possessions, of our flesh and blood. All the riches of our soil, all the resources of our resolution, we will fling into the crucible. Our minds are made up: we will not die. Book Britain in Arms Classic Reprint

Download or read book Britain in Arms Classic Reprint written by Jules Destrée and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain in Arms We ourselves are rising to the supreme height of sacrifice. Is it possible, we ask, that over there, away beyond sea and mountain, our comrades in the struggle are fighting with an effort, a spirit of determination, commensurate with our own? Terrible is the moment when a man asks himself questions such as these. When the oarsman begins to dread that his companion is like to fail, he is near to feeling that the full burden of the task is weighing on him alone. It is well, therefore, that someone should be heard from time to time telling us the part wrought by each in the fulfilment of the common duty. Monsieur Destree, in the following pages, speaks to us of England, of the effort she is making on sea and land, and of the resolution by which she is inspired; and the things he tells us are most splendid and reassuring. Book An Apprenticeship in Arms

Download or read book An Apprenticeship in Arms written by Roger B. Manning and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-05-25 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a wide range of historical and literary sources, An Apprenticeship in Arms is a scholarly study of the military experiences of peers and gentlemen from the British Isles who volunteered to fight in the religious and dynastic wars of mainland Europe, as well as the ordinary men who were impressed to serve in the ranks from the time of the English intervention in the Dutch war of independence in 1585 to the death of the soldier-king William III in 1702. This apprenticeship in arms exposed these men to the technological innovations of the military revolution, laid the foundations for a fledgling professional officer class based upon merit and established a fund of military expertise. This remilitarization of aristocratic culture and society was completed by 1640, and provided numerous experienced military officers for the various armies of the civil wars and, subsequently, for the embryonic British army after William III invaded and conquered the British Isles and committed the Three Kingdoms to the armed struggle against Louis XIV during the Nine Years War. Conflicts between amateur aristocrats and so-called 'soldiers of fortune' led to continuing debates about the relative merits of standing armies and a select militia; the individual pursuit of honour and glory by such amateurs also obscured the more rational military and political objectives of the modern state, subverted military discipline, and delayed the process of the professionalization of the officer corps of the British army.

Book The Profession of Arms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sir John Hackett
  • Publisher : MacMillan Publishing Company
  • Release : 1983
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book The Profession of Arms written by Sir John Hackett and published by MacMillan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1983 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I read this book on the recommendation from a fellow officer in order to gain a better historical perspective of the military profession. This book develops the lineage from Armies of the ancient world to today's modern Armies in a rather concise and insightful manner. Sir John Hackett focuses a lot on the relationship between the military forces and the countries they represent on the battlefield. He also offers some interesting opinions about training future leaders in the Armed Services based on his vast military experience and career. I thoroughly enjoyed this book (it has many interesting photos and prints throughout the text), although it is written from a European (the author is British) perspective. The author does devote some time to the US Army, but his main focus is the European military system. Therefore, if you are looking for a book about how the American Army has changed over time, I do not recommend this one. On the other hand, I do recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about how the profession of arms has developed over time. It would make a fine addition to your military history library if you have one, or serve as a great first addition, if you are thinking of starting one. -- website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the George Washington Prize Winner of the Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize in American History Winner of the Excellence in American History Book Award Winner of the Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award From the bestselling author of the Liberation Trilogy comes the extraordinary first volume of his new trilogy about the American Revolution Rick Atkinson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning An Army at Dawn and two other superb books about World War II, has long been admired for his deeply researched, stunningly vivid narrative histories. Now he turns his attention to a new war, and in the initial volume of the Revolution Trilogy he recounts the first twenty-one months of America’s violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force. It is a gripping saga alive with astonishing characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes a brilliant battle captain; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves to be the wiliest of diplomats; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. The story is also told from the British perspective, making the mortal conflict between the redcoats and the rebels all the more compelling. Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of our country’s creation drama.
