Book excerpt: As a global phenomenon Britishness encompassed trade, conquest and settlement and the development of imperial cultures within the vast reaches of the British Empire. At its zenith peoples around the world joined in shared traditions and common loyalties that were strenuously maintained; even those who contested its claims found it difficult to escape its effects. With the eclipse of British power and influence, the importance of this legacy has attracted increasing attention from researchers seeking to escape the confines of national histories. Britishness Abroad explores the cultural, economic and political aspects of Britishness in Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Canada and South Africa, as well as in the United States and within Britain itself. Leading scholars consider the movement of people, money, technology, identities, beliefs and attitudes around the British world and examine what happened to Britishness as the Empire declined. Contributors: Stephen Banfield, Kate Darian-Smith, Anne Dickson-Waiko, Patricia Grimshaw, David Goodman, Jonathan Hyslop, John MacKenzie, Gary Magee and Andrew Thompson, Adele Perry, Bill Schwarz, Stuart Ward

Book HC 516 Support for British Nationals Abroad The Consular Service

Download or read book HC 516 Support for British Nationals Abroad The Consular Service written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Foreign Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Consular Service of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office provides vital support to British nationals overseas. It offers a wide range of services, handling anything from lost passports to kidnap, a major crisis evacuation or verification of a document. It is the FCO's public face, and it is central to its reputation at home. Britons undertaking more adventurous travel, large expatriate populations and a series of major overseas crises have tested the Consular Service in recent years. In 2013, the FCO dealt with over 450,000 consular customers, over 17,000 of whom received personal assistance. The Consular Service has responded with a "strategic shift" to provide a more standardised and professional service. However, the strategic shift to a "smaller and better" consular service has also meant that some services have been limited or withdrawn, and standardisation has meant the end of so-called "over-service" as well as under-service. The FCO has consequently put great emphasis on encouraging self-help, managing expectations and explaining the limits of its assistance to British nationals. Despite these efforts to explain to the public what the FCO can and cannot do, there was still a significant gap between the high expectations of the public and the reality of what the FCO could provide.

Book Greatness and Decline

Download or read book Greatness and Decline written by Srdjan Vucetic and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exceptionalist ideas have long influenced British foreign policy. As Britain begins to confront the challenges of a post-Brexit era in an increasingly unstable world, a re-examination of the nature and causes of this exceptionalist bent is in order. Arguing that Britain's search for greatness in world affairs was, and still is, a matter of habit, Srdjan Vucetic takes a closer look at the period between Clement Attlee's "New Jerusalem" and Tony Blair's New Labour. Britain's tenacious pursuit of global power was never just a function of consensus among policymakers or even political elites more broadly. Rather, it developed from popular, everyday, and gradually evolving ideas about identity circulating within British – and, more specifically, English – society as a whole. To uncover these ideas, Vucetic works with a unique archive of political speeches, newspapers, history textbooks, novels, and movies across colonial, Cold War, and post–Cold War periods. Greatness and Decline sheds new light on Britain's interactions with the rest of the world while demonstrating new possibilities for constructivist foreign policy analysis.

Book The British Abroad Since the Eighteenth Century Volume 2

Download or read book The British Abroad Since the Eighteenth Century Volume 2 written by Martin Farr and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the second part of a two volume collection of new essays from international scholars, is concerned with examining the British experience of travel, tourism, and imperialism. It considers the British travelling beyond their isles over the last three hundred years, and through a range of interdisciplinary perspectives reflects on their taste for discovery and self-discovery both through the exploration – and exploitation – of other lands and peoples, and also through their encounters with other societies and civilisations. Experiencing Imperialism focuses on colonised lands and peoples, from the British Empire and those of other western powers, from territories ruled by the West to those that gained independence. Together the essays offer fresh and often challenging perspectives on the colonial and postcolonial ages, increasingly characterised as they were by the dominance of new means of transport and communication; of a world defined, as they saw it, by those travellers, explorers and colonialists.

Book Six Moments of Crisis

  • Author : Gill Bennett
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-02-15
  • ISBN : 0191641626
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Six Moments of Crisis written by Gill Bennett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former Whitehall insider Gill Bennett unravels the story of six crucial British foreign policy challenges since the Second World War, from the Korean War to the Falklands conflict, offering an inside account of episodes that shaped Britain's position in the world for decades to come - and in some cases still arouse controversy to this day. Lifting the lid on the making of British foreign policy from Clement Attlee to Margaret Thatcher, Bennett reveals each decision in a way that has never been done before: telling the story from the inside out and without hindsight. The result is a book that explains not just why these controversial decisions were taken, but one that shows us how history is actually made - and also just how difficult these big decisions really were. Gill Bennett considers exactly what ministers knew at the time; how personal experience, relationships, past events and prevailing circumstance influenced the decision-making process; and how the balance of history was tipped in each case: by argument, moral imperative, obligation - or even sheer force of personality.
