Book The Great Age of British Watercolours 1750 1880

Download or read book The Great Age of British Watercolours 1750 1880 written by Andrew Wilton and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolution in watercolours of the later eighteenth century and its Victorian aftermath is acknowledged to be one of the greatest triumphs of British art. Its effect was to transform the modest tinted drawing of the topographer into a powerful and highly flexible means of expression for some of the Romantic era's greatest artists, among them Thomas Girtin, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. The painters of the next generation were no less ambitious, and the range of subject-matter and technical inventiveness that was sustained for much of the Victorian period was to set a standard in watercolour painting that was without equal abroad. In this magnificently illustrated survey of the great age of British watercolours, Andrew Wilton and Anne Lyles trace the development of attitudes to landscape and to the human figure in the landscape from 1750 to 1880. They show how once the traditional pen and ink drawing and its augmented washes of colour had been abandoned in order to paint directly in watercolours without pen outlines, the way was open for the powerful Romantic landscapes of the following decade and beyond, many of which were painted in the wild mountainous regions of Wales and Scotland. During the nineteenth century, as the gilt-framed exhibition watercolour began to challenge the long-established oil painting in terms of size and in brilliance of colour and effect, the range of subject-matter was broadened to include scenes of country and town life from every part of Britain and, increasingly, from the Continent too. By mid-century the Near East was attracting many of the greatest Victorian watercolourists, including J. E. Lewis, David Roberts and Edward Lear. Other leadingVictorians who regularly worked in watercolour include the Pre-Raphaelite painters John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, and the American-born James McNeill Whistler, all of whom are included in this book.

Download or read book British Water Colour Painting of To Day 1921 Classic Reprint written by Geoffrey Holme and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Water-Colour Painting of to-Day, 1921 The finished drawing, with its wealth of detail, has almost disappeared. It has been supplanted by the photograph, and what was achieved in days gone by with infinite toil, can now be obtained in a few minutes by a machine, albeit it lacks the essence of all creative art - individual expression. The modern tendency in water-colour painting points more and more in the direction of recording this essence in a visible form, and it is hoped that the examples in the following pages will give some idea of the various methods being adopted to achieve this end. While much of the work which is being pro duced to-day - re ecting, as it does, the general state of affairs, desperately groping after ideas but dimly conceived may, in time, develop so that it reaches a form which can be understood by the lay mind, at present it cannot be said to have advanced much beyond the experimental stage, and it has therefore been omitted from this survey. The water-colours which have been chosen for illustration are not experiments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Trevor Chamberlain's watercolour paintings are a celebration of light and atmosphere, and his skill in painting directly from nature to capture the mood of his subjects has earned him an enviable reputation among both amateur and professional artists. Here Trevor Chamberlain offers a fascinating glimpse over his shoulder as he describes his approach to interpreting the effects of light and weather using the limited watercolourist's palette. Mood in nature is his constant source of inspiration and his favoured subjects are marine, town and landscape. He particularly enjoys capturing the transient aspects of the English weather but he has also travelled extensively and enjoys the challenge of confronting the unfamiliar light and surroundings in exotic locations such as Egypt, Iran and India. An artist of the plein air tradition, he always paints directly from nature at first hand, an approach which he enthusiastically recommends to readers of this book.

Hazel Soan is a well-known and popular artist and an enthusiastic and inspirational teacher. In The Essence of Watercolour Hazel shows how wonderfully versatile and beguiling the medium of watercolour is and how to get the most out of it. Hazel stresses how important it is to understand the characteristics of the medium in order to exploit it to the full. She encourages the reader to explore the properties of watercolour and to be unafraid of strength of colour and brushstroke. Hazel shows through demonstration and projects that tone is king in watercolour and illustrates how to paint light with the use of shade. Armed with this understanding she demonstrates that watercolour is not such an unforgiving medium after all: accidents and mistakes can be disguised, overridden and corrected. The Essence of Watercolour is a culmination of many years of Hazel's teaching and demonstrating, in which she offers inspirational insights into the secrets of watercolour painting and encourages artists to take their art to the next level.
