Book Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants

Download or read book Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants written by Joseph Caffrey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors flower painters and garden designers

Download or read book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors flower painters and garden designers written by Ray Desmond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

Download or read book Economic Botany written by G.E. Wickens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of this book is that it is written by someone who has spent a lifetime devoted to the science of economic botany. The author has brought together his vast experience in the field in Africa with his studies of arid land plants at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The result is an informative and reliable text that covers a vast range of topics. It is also firmly based upon the author's research and interest in plant taxonomy and therefore fully acknowledges the importance of correct naming and classification in the field of science of economic botany. The coverage is of economic botany in its broadest sense. I was delighted to find such topics as ecophysiology, plant breeding, the environment and conservation are included in the text. This gives the book a much more comprehensive coverage than most other texts on the subject. I was also glad to see that the book covers the use of various organisms that are no longer considered part of the plant kingdom such as various species of fungi and algae. It is indeed a broad ranging book that will be of use to many people interested in the uses of plants and fungi. Economic botany is once again being given more prominence as a discipline because of its enormous relevance to both conservation and sustainable development. Those people involved in those topics shOUld find this a most useful resource.

Book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North western Europe

Download or read book Key Works to the Fauna and Flora of the British Isles and North western Europe written by Reginald William Sims and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal works for the identification of all living organisms - animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and viruses - reported from the British I sles and north-western Europe are listed in this book. The new edition has been entirely rewritten by a team of specialists. It presents a succinct selection of the relevant recent and standard literature, for use when identifying the living organisms of north-western Europe and the adjacent shelf seas. Much of the value of the work lies in its application over a wide area, helping biologists to identify rare or new records of species commonly reported in other countries. Each reference is listed with the title appearing first and the author name(s) and date appearing last, making references to a particular topic easier to find. The book is arranged under the major groups, for faster identification of specimens. With the librarian's advisory work in mind, details are provided of general guides to the fauna and flora, and the faunal lists of marine biological stations. Biologists (professional and amateur) who need to identify any living organism found in north-western Europe, and taxonomists and ecologists in particular will find this book very useful.

Book The Physiology of Characean Cells

Download or read book The Physiology of Characean Cells written by Mary J. Beilby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the unique characean experimental system, which provides a simplified model for many aspects of the physiology, transport and electrophysiology of higher plants. The first chapter offers a thorough grounding in the morphology, taxonomy and ecology of Characeae plants. Research on characean detached cells in steady state is summarised in Chapter 2, and Chapter 3 covers characean detached cells subjected to calibrated and mostly abiotic types of stress: touch, wounding, voltage clamp to depolarised and hyperpolarised potential difference levels, osmotic and saline stress. Chapter 4 highlights cytoplasmic streaming, cell-to-cell transport, gravitropism, cell walls and the role of Characeae in phytoremediation. The book is intended for researchers and students using the characean system and will also serve as an invaluable reference resource for electrophysiologists working on higher plants.
