Book British Reptiles Amphibians and Fresh Water Fishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Reptiles Amphibians and Fresh Water Fishes Classic Reprint written by W. Percival Westell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fresh-Water Fishes It is hoped that this third volume of "The Abbey Nature Books" will be no less popular than the preceding volumes devoted to British Mammals and British Birds. A feature of this third book in the series is that practically every species included is illustrated, and these illustrations, together with the descriptive matter, will, it is hoped, result in more attention being paid to these classes of animals than heretofore. The Author has to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. Frank Gibson's "Superstitions about Animals," and to Mr. C. Tate Regan's admirable book on "The Fresh-Water Fishes of the British Isles," to which the reader is confidently referred for more detailed information concerning the third class of animals included in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Fresh Water Fishes It only remains for me to express my thanks to those gentlemen who have rendered me assistance in procuring specimens, or otherwise helping me. I must especially thank Dr. A. Gunther, of the British Museum - the highest living ichthyological authority* - for permission to make use of the Plates in T lze Proceedings of me Zoological Socz'efy of London, (1862, 1863, illustrating his papers on the British species of Charr; I have also to thank the Council of that Society for granting me the same permission. I have been fortunate enough to see and handle all the British Charrs, and specimens of all the species have been before the artist engaged in this work, but the Plates above named were found most useful in giving the characteristic colouration which specimens some days out of the water, or specimens preserved in spirits, almost invariably lose. I have also, through the kindness of Dr. Gunther, had opportunities of examining specimens of various fish in the British Museum; and the artist has been able to take figures of some species which are either rare, or which I failed to procure for myself. Download or read book British Reptiles and Amphibians Classic Reprint written by A. Nicol Simpson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Reptiles and Amphibians This little volume, dealing with the British Reptiles and Amphibians, may well find a place in the Peeps at Nature Series. Britain has few representatives of these two classes of animals, but their fewness in number has enabled the author to deal with each species at some length; and, besides, we have the additional advantage of being able to illustrate all but two of the British species in colour. We are indebted to Miss Scrivener for the capabie way in which she has prepared the drawings from which the coloured plates have been prepared. The reader's attention is par ticularly directed to the series of photographic repro ductions on Plates III., VI., VII., X., and XL, which illustrate admirably the story of the development of the frog. Book British Natural History Studies

Download or read book British Natural History Studies written by William Percival Westell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Natural History Studies: Reptiles, Amphibians, Fishes, Etc The Common lizard.-this is the smallest of the three British lizards, and is a handsome little species. It feeds almost entirely on an insect dietary; is a good swimmer; produces its young alive, the egg hatching within its own body, and differing from the sand lizard in this respect. Hence this species is called viviparous, whilst the next species is called oviparous. These are most interesting points which the reader should not lose sight of. Three or four young ones are born sometimes more - and these are very dark in colour, almost black. The adult lizard is greenish-brown, has black or dark brown longitudinal bands, and a bright orange-yellow belly spotted with black. The Sand Lizard - The sand lizard is a much rarer species than its last - named relative. It resorts to the plains, and may be identified from the com mon lizard by having teeth and smaller scales. It varies a good deal in colour; brown in various shades tinged with green, white on belly, spotted minutely with black. On the back and sides there are rows of white spots which vary in number. The eggs, which number about twelve, are deposited in the sand, where they hatch unassisted by the parents. First, the creatures herein described are living pets, the occupants Of the Vivarium and not the Cabinet. Download or read book History of British Reptiles Classic Reprint written by Thomas Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of British Reptiles In the Chelonians, or Tortoises, and in the Ophidians, or Serpent tribe, the extremes of these different types of organization are exhibited. In the common European land Tortoise, Testudo Gram, which may be selected as a familiar example of the former group, the whole struc ture of the skeleton is brought into the most compact and solid state. The bones of the cranium and face are consolidated into a single and. Immovable case, with scarcely the vestige of sutures showing the separation of the different centres of ossification upon which it has been formed; there are no teeth, but the margins Of the upper and of the lower jaw are covered by a horny beak, the latter being received into a groove of the former, and thus closing like the lid of a box; then the whole of the dorsal vertebrae, the ribs, the bones representing the sterno-costal cartilages, and the broad united sternum, are altogether compacted into a case of bone, without any separation between the parts of which it is composed. The anterior and posterior extremities are fully developed, but, instead of being placed exterior to the thorax, they are all of them contained within its cavity, and even the bones of the feet are only extended beyond the horny box which protects them, when the animal is employing them in progression.
