Book British Policy Towards Greece During the Second World War 1941 1944

Download or read book British Policy Towards Greece During the Second World War 1941 1944 written by Procopis Papastratis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail how British policy towards Greece was formulated and implemented from 1941 to 1944. The defeat of Greece and the fall of the dictatorial regime of General Metaxas confronted the British with new problems, the most important being the reconciliation of military and political objectives. The main political objective was to ensure the continuation of Britain's political influence in Greece after the war. This policy would be greatly facilitated by the restoration of King George, a firm advocate of the British connection, though the King's popularity in Greece had been seriously eroded by his close association with the Metaxas dictatorship in the years before the war. However, a policy of support for the King ran counter to the support offered by the War Office and SOE to the National Liberation Front (EAM), a communist-dominated left-wing organization and by far the strongest resistance movement in Greece.

Book The British and the Greek Resistance 1936 1944

Download or read book The British and the Greek Resistance 1936 1944 written by André Gerolymatos and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1941 and 1944, the Germans and the Italians imposed a brutal occupation of Greece. This, as well as the outbreak of famine, drove many Greeks to join a variety of resistance movements in the mountains. The British government anticipated the German occupation of Europe and created the Special Operations Executive (SOE). One directorate of the SOE was responsible for partisan activity in the mountains and another directorate focused on encouraging espionage and sabotage in Greek cities. Over 3000 Greeks and British operated espionage networks that made a significant contribution to the war effort in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately the work of the spy and saboteur working in the shadows remained classified until the end of the twentieth century. The release of SOE documents in the twenty-first century provides an amazing insight into how intelligence operations were a critical part of the Allied victory of the Second World War. The aim of the book is to bring to life the stories of the ghosts of the shadow war.

This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering study of the impact of the famine that occurred in Greece during its occupation by German, Italian and Bulgarian forces in 1941 and 1942. Violetta Hionidou examines the courses and politics of this food crisis, focusing on the demography of the famine and the effectiveness of the relief operations. Her interdisciplinary approach combines demographic, historical and anthropological methodologies to offer a comprehensive account of the famine. This important study makes a major contribution to current debates about mortality and its causes during famines.

Book Time on the Mountain

Book excerpt: Using the wartime reports produced by various field agents of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), this dissertation attempts to rebut the currently hegemonic notion that the communist-led EAM/ELAS resistance organization was unprepared to militarily challenge the British and their anticommunist Greek clients for control of Greece after the German evacuation in late 1944. It also seeks to counter the related assumption that EAM/ELAS's wide popularity after the end of the Axis occupation made a fight with the British unnecessary. The fact that conflict erupted anyway is cited by many historians sympathetic to EAM/ELAS as proof positive that EAM/ELAS's supposedly hapless, naïve, and inexperienced leadership was manipulated into starting a revolution by the preternaturally clever British. The OSS reports from various parts of wartime Greece collected in this dissertation refute this supposition. By restoring historical agency to EAM/ELAS, this study also implicitly broaches the broader question of the origin of revolutionary violence. Despite the stated commitment of EAM/ELAS's leaders to the concept of the Popular Front, the organization as a whole was responsible for conducting numerous ideological witch-hunts against its perceived domestic enemies during the war. In contrast, opposing the Axis appeared in many instances to be a secondary concern for many within the organization. Ultimately, this study argues that the beguiling utopian vision of a communist future for Greece created a kind of revolutionary imperative that dragged many members of EAM/ELAS, whether leaders or rank-and-file, along in its inexorable wake. Unfortunately for Greece, at the end of that path lay civil war.

Book British Policy in Greece 1944 1947

Download or read book British Policy in Greece 1944 1947 written by George Martin Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this thesis is to trace the evolution of British policy toward Greece from April 19 until February 19 7. Emphasis will be placed on an analysis of the impact of British policy on Greek internal affairs. Greece's economic problems will be described in lesser detail, and only in so far as they directly impinged upon the course of her internal political development. Greece's international predicament, that of a stumbling block in East-West relations in the first years of the "Gold War," also will be treated as a secondary theme. -- The objective of the British Governments between April 19 and February 19 7 vas to secure a non-Comniuiii s t Greece governed on Western democratic lines -- non-Communist, to safegxiard Britain's strategic position in South East Europe and the Middle East; and governed in a manner accountable to the will of the people, in order that the country shcmld be stable, for an ally internally rent by oppression arid civil strife would be more a liability than an asset. This objective was to be realised in a free plebiscite and elections, to be conducted in Greece following her liberation from the Germans. -- The possibility of conducting a free plebiscite and elections proved to be so remote from the reality of Greek political life, however, that the successful implementation of British policy carne to depend to a grave degree on British, intervention in Greek internal affairs. Britain intervened against extremists of the Left and 'Right, but could not create a .Centre of sufficient strength to lead the Greeks to political stability. Her policy thus ended in failure, the failure of an industrial democracy's attempt to erect in a less developed nation a system of democratic governance beyond that nation's social and political capacity to sustain.

Book excerpt: The complicated and dramatic course of the Civil War in Greece had, for lack of parties interested in reconstructing the truth of its events, never been narrated prior to the appearance of this volume. It closed a gap in the history of our times, and did so with thoroughness and vivid journalistic immediacy. In addition to the known sources and unpublished documents, the author relied on testimony painstakingly collected from survivors of the tragedy who were scattered throughout the world. It remains the authoritative account of the kapetanios, the guerrilla chiefs who organized the partisans in the Greek mountains.
