Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most used and most useful works of reference on the Great War ever published. In this marvellous volume is listed every cavalry and Yeomanry regiment, every battalion of every infantry regiment, Regular, Territorial or other - that existed during the Great War. In every case the location of the unit on 4 August 1914 is given, or the date and place of its formation if raised after the outbreak of war. Its initial disposition, subsequent moves, changes in subordination and final disposal or location on 11 November 1918 are all recorded. Thus, in a masterly and concise form, we have the war service record of 31 regular and 17 reserve cavalry regiments, 57 Yeomanry regiments and their second and third line counterparts and nearly 1,750 infantry battalions. Several appendices contain a mine of information; a table of the infantry regiments showing the number of the different types of battalions each had, regular, reserve, extra reserve, territorial, New Army, garrison etc.; how the New Army battalions were raised; the Training Reserve; list of infantry divisions; summary of battle honours, casualties and VCs of each infantry regiment. Finally, there is a good index.

Download or read book The Handbook of British Regiments Routledge Revivals written by Christopher Chant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the standing army in 1661, when each regiment was known by the name of its current colonel, there have been many reforms and rationalizations of the British army. From 31 cavalry regiments and 113 infantry regiments in 1881, at the time of this title’s first publication in 1988, the army had reduced to just 16 regiments of armour and 39 regiments of infantry through processes of absorption and amalgamation. The Handbook of British Regiments provides insight into the lineage and history of the approximately 85 regiments and corps which formed the British army towards the end of the 1980s. Comprehensive in coverage, each has a separate entry giving factual details in a layout standardized for easy comparison, including current title, colonel-in-chief, uniform and history, amongst others. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, this handbook provides an accessible guide to specialists as well as lay enthusiasts, and illustrates a sense of the continuity and inherited tradition of each regiment and corps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An impressive work of research which is not so much a regimental history as a social study of the three battalions of the 5th (London Rifle Brigade) London Regiment: 1/5th, 2/5th and 3/5th. The first two served on the Western Front, the third (3/5th) did not leave the UK. LRB was a battalion which required an entrance fee from its members and excluded the labourers' class. It had a strong esprit de corps, a high morale and was not ashamed of its exclusiveness. These characteristics and the reason for them are examined in detail. The author describes the background of those who served in the unit at various stages of the war, their civilian occupation, where they lived how long they had been with the LRB and so forth. Appendices list casualties, COs and adjutants and those who obtained commissions. This record is all the more interesting for the unusual perspective from which it is written.

Book The British Army 1914 1918

Download or read book The British Army 1914 1918 written by Andrew Rawson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable guide to the British Army during the First World War covers the men who fought for Britain: from the 'Old Contemptibles' – the professionals who stemmed the German advance at the beginning of the war – to the Territorials, the 'Derby Men', Kitchener's 'New Army' and the conscripts who eventually defeated the Kaiser's armies four years later. Andrew Rawson examines the impressive contributions made by the Dominions and the Empire and explores aspects of doctrine, training, communications, strategy and tactics, together with divisional organisations, histories and the roles of the different Arms and Services. He reviews all aspects of the soldier's everyday life – uniforms, equipment, rations, trench life, leave and military discipline – and profiles the commanders and the legacy of the war in art, as well as providing information on cemeteries and places of interest. It is all here, in one book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Army Reforms of 1906/07 the Secretary of State for War, Richard Burdon Haldane, provided for an expeditionary force the Regular Army supplemented by the old Militia and a new organisation intended for home defence, the Territorial Force. This new 'Citizen's Army' was formed by the transfer of the Honourable Artillery Company, Imperial Yeomanry and Volunteer Force, all with many years of service and tradition. At the outbreak of war, the Territorial Force was organised as per the Regular Army, with infantry battalions, artillery, engineers, supply and medical formations. This title takes a highly detailed and illustrated look at the badges and uniforms and the changing organisation of the British Territorial units during the Great War. It also covers the combat experiences of the men who soon found themselves in service overseas, in the thick of the fighting.

Book Badges of the Regular Infantry 1914 1918

Download or read book Badges of the Regular Infantry 1914 1918 written by David Bilton and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Badges of the Regular Infantry, 1914-1918 is based on over thirty years research in museums, archives and collections. It is an exhaustive study of the development of the battalion, brigade and divisional signs of the twelve divisions that formed the regular army during the Great War. It also looks at the badges of those battalions left behind to guard the Empire. While the divisional signs are well known, there has been no authoritative work on the signs worn by the infantry battalions. The book will illustrate the cap and shoulder titles used, as well as cloth signs worn to provide easy recognition in the trenches. Each regular and reserve battalion of a regiment has a listing, which provides a brief history of the unit and detailed information on the badges worn. It is prodigiously illustrated and contains much information, like why a shape or color was chosen, when it was adopted, what size it was, whether it was worn on a helmet, what color the helmet was and even what colors were used on horse transport; the majority of this rich and detailed information has never been published before. What helps make the information accurate and authoritative is that much of it comes from an archive created at the time and from personal correspondence with hundreds of veterans in the 1980s, many of whom still had their badges and often had razor-sharp recollections about wearing them. The book also provides some comments from these veterans. Using the illustrations will allow many of those unidentified photos in family albums to come to life.
