Book Reforming our railways

Download or read book Reforming our railways written by Great Britain: Department for Transport and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Command Paper sets out the Government's vision and policies for the railways. Applying to England and Wales, the Government seeks to work with the rail industry and others to secure significant reductions in the railway's cost base, while at the same time improving the railway for passengers and freight customers. The Government sees railway reform as delivering four objectives: (1) Securing value for the passenger and addressing concerns about rail fares; (2) Dealing with the fiscal deficit; (3) Supporting economic growth, through continued taxpayer investment for passengers and freight; (4) Delivering environmental goals, by reducing carbon emissions. The Command Paper also considers the finding and recommendations set out in Sir Roy McNulty's independent "Realising the Potential of GB Rail: Report of the Rail Value for Money Study" (available from the DfT here - http://www.dft.gov.uk/publications/realising-the-potential-of-gb-rail/). The publication is divided into six chapters: Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: A better deal for passengers; Chapter 3: A more strategic role for Government; Chapter 4: A more efficient industry; Chapter 5: Better information; Chapter 6: Implementing rail reform.

Book British Railways 1948 73

Download or read book British Railways 1948 73 written by T. R. Gourvish and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 1690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this is a business history of the first twenty-five years of nationalised railways in Britain. Commissioned by the British Railways Board and based on the Board's extensive archives, it fully analyses the dynamics of nationalised industry management and the complexities of the vital relationship with government. After exploring the origins of nationalisation, the book deals with the organisation, financial performance, investment and commercial policies of the British Transport Commission (1948-2), Railway Executive (1948-53) and British Railways Board (1963-73). Calculations of profit and loss, investment, and productivity are provided on a consistent basis for 1948-73. This business history thus represents a major contribution not only to the debate about the role of the railways in a modern economy but also to that concerning the nationalised industries, which have proved to be one of the most enduring problems of the British economy since the war.

Book Explaining Railway Reform in China

Download or read book Explaining Railway Reform in China written by Linda Tjia Yin-nor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been state-owned for decades, the railway reform in China confused many people, particularly in terms of its ownership and property rights arrangements. Western literature always prescribes that the best model for railway reform is privatization. China’s leadership has also enunciated the state’s determination to re-arrange property rights and rejuvenate corporate governance. But is China’s railway reform really a story of convergence and will the Chinese government follow the western model of railway reform? Addressing these questions, this book provides a positive explanation of the reform in China’s railway sector between 1978 and the dissolution of the Ministry of Railways. It bridges the socialist reform and transport policy literature, and studies the empirical changes of the property rights arrangements in China’s railway system. Refuting the convergence theory, it concludes that the cyclical reform policies of decentralization and re-centralization were actually an exploratory and interactive mechanism of "assets discovery" and "assets recovery". This in-depth study is based on 21 face-to-face interviews with railway cadres as well as field trips to collect first-hand information in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Wuhan. As one of the only empirical studies on the reform of the railway sector in China, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of China studies, Transport studies and Political Economy.
