Book The Artist s Assistant

Download or read book The Artist s Assistant written by Leslie Carlyle and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Leslie Carlyle points out in The Artist's Assistant: Oil Painting Instruction Manuals and Handbooks in Britain 1800-1900 with Reference to Selected Eighteenth-Century Sources (a revised and expanded edition of her doctoral dissertation), the exchange and transmission of information among artists on the technical aspects of their calling have been carried on through mostly an "oral tradition," with some further enlightenment provided through artists' diaries, letters, and the occasional published article. In the nineteenth century in England, however, a remarkable number of books and pamphlets having to do with oil painting were published, following on the heels of a large body of work published in the previous century. This book contains remarkable scholarship of the highest order. It provides a wealth of information about the development of English oil painting in an accessible and readable way, and each chapter concludes with an extensive list of notes and references. Its story, to me at least, reveals that two hundred years ago artists and manufacturers were dealing thoughtfully and thoroughly with their materials. This is a reference that should be in every art-history library. It will prove an especially valuable resource for conservators who do research in order to treat nineteenth-century English paintings. --Publisher description

Book Nineteenth Century British Painting

Download or read book Nineteenth Century British Painting written by Luke Herrmann and published by Giles de La Mare. This book was released on 2000 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating volume explores a century in British painting that produced an enormous variety of work, ranging from the beginnings of Romanticism in the late 18th century to the British adoption of impressionism in the late 19th century. Dividing this prolific period into nine sections, the work of each artist is discussed, analyzed, and presented in biographical context. With longer sections devoted to such maior figures as Lawrence, Turner, Constable, Rossetti, Leighton, and Whistler, the artists are placed in the framework of their historical, social, and economic backgrounds. The majority of the paintings and drawings that are examined are handsomely reproduced in more than 300 plates, making this an excellent choice for students, connoisseurs, and collectors as well as anyone interested in British art. Among Luke Herrmann's books is "J.M.W. Turner Watercolours and Drawings."

Book Black Victorians

Download or read book Black Victorians written by Manchester City Art Gallery and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The black presence in Victorian art is greater than may be supposed. Indeed, the expanding art market in the nineteenth century was largely based on British prosperity resulting from imperial commerce and conquest. It can therefore be said that Victorian art owes its existence to those who are relatively absent from its images. Black Victorians brings together over 100 images depicting black figures, to reveal the diversity of representation within nineteenth-century visual culture and to foreground the 'forgotten' presence of people of African descent in Victorian British art. The range of images is broad, from pictures of soldiers and sailors in Britain's armed forces and men and women in genre scenes to portraits of entertainers and political refugees and studies of artists' models. Notable individuals featured include actor Ira Aldridge, Crimean heroine Mary Seacole, the Queen's god-daughter Sarah Bonetta Davies, composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass. In addition to the fine arts of painting, drawing and sculpture, the selection includes photography, popular illustration, caricature and ephemera, which provide a cultural context for the portraits and subject pictures, as well as presenting black figures as members of British society in everyday settings. Many major artists of the period are represented, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, Edward Burne-Jones, Julia Margaret Cameron, Edgar Degas and J. A. M. Whistler. Many works are virtually unknown and collected here for the first time. Presenting an important opportunity to see and assess how black figures have been portrayed in British art, Black Victorians is an original and fascinating survey of a subject that has been given little coverage to date. It is essential reading for anyone wishing to seek a fresh perspective on a well-documented period of British history."--Book jacket.

Book British Art for Australia 1860 1953

Download or read book British Art for Australia 1860 1953 written by Matthew C. Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional postcolonial scholarship on art and imperialism emphasises tensions between colonising cores and subjugated peripheries. The ties between London and British white settler colonies have been comparatively neglected. Artworks not only reveal the controlling intentions of imperialist artists in their creation but also the uses to which they were put by others in their afterlives. In many cases they were used to fuel contests over cultural identity which expose a mixture of rifts and consensuses within the British ranks which were frequently assumed to be homogeneous. British Art for Australia, 1860–1953: The Acquisition of Artworks from the United Kingdom by Australian National Galleries represents the first systematic and comparative study of collecting British art in Australia between 1860 and 1953 using the archives of the Australian national galleries and other key Australian and UK institutions. Multiple audiences in the disciplines of art history, cultural history, and museology are addressed by analysing how Australians used British art to carve a distinct identity, which artworks were desirable, economically attainable, and why, and how the acquisition of British art fits into a broader cultural context of the British world. It considers the often competing roles of the British Old Masters (e.g. Romney and Constable), Victorian (e.g. Madox Brown and Millais), and modern artists (e.g. Nash and Spencer) alongside political and economic factors, including the developing global art market, imperial commerce, Australian Federation, the First World War, and the coming of age of the Commonwealth.

Book British Paintings of the Sixteenth Through Nineteenth Centuries

Download or read book British Paintings of the Sixteenth Through Nineteenth Centuries written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the paintings in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., that were produced by British artists, or by foreign artists who spent the greater part of their working lives in Britain, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Composed mainly of paintings acquired by such prominent nineteenth-century industrialists as Andrew Mellon and P.A.B. Widener, the core of this important collection is a series of portraits by such masters as Gainsborough, Lawrence, Raeburn, and Romney, who represent the "golden age" of British painting. Brilliant landscapes by Constable, Turner, and Wilson, among others, attest to another genre in which British artists have long excelled. Arranged alphabetically by artist, full catalogue entries articulate the history, style, content, and context of each work, with technical notes offering insight into the artists' working methods. The volume also contains introductory biographies of each artist, as well as an up-to-date bibliography for each painting.
