Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mick Walker has produced the definitive book on British motorcycle racing circuits. Here, for the first time, is every circuit, from Aberdare Park to Waterbeach, with hundreds both well known and now long-forgotten in between. Fully illustrated by way of colorful program covers, circuit maps and period photographs, this is a must-have for any real racing enthusiast. Motorcycle racing in Great Britain began in 1907 with the opening of Brooklands near Weybridge in Surrey, the first purpose-built circuit in Europe and the inaugural staging of the Isle of Man TT. Then, during the interwar period came venues such as Cadwell Park, Crystal Palace, Syston and Donington Park. However, it was after the end of the World War Two in 1945 that really saw circuit racing establish itself. Not only with the influx of former wartime airfields including Boreham, Haddonham, Ibsley, Thruxton, Silverstone, and Snetterton, but also Brands Hatch, Alton Towers, Scarborough, and Outton Park to name but a few. North of the border came Beveridge Park, Errol and Charterholl, while across the Irish Sea, the Ulster Grand Prix and the North West 200 were bolstered by a myriad of new road courses.

Book Never Say Never

Download or read book Never Say Never written by Nick Harris and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The unmistakable voice of Moto GP' - Valentino Rossi As 'The Voice' of motorcycle racing for forty years, commentator Nick Harris became the biggest star not on two wheels in the paddock, and this is his mostly eye-witness, white-knuckle account of MotoGP's scorching seventy-year history. The story starts on the Isle of Man in 1949, when Geoff Duke, with his slicked-back hair and one-piece black leathers, became the nation's hero, defying the odds and winning the most dangerous race in the world on a British-built Norton. Just over a decade later at Mallory Park, another British champion and one of the greatest riders of all time Mike Hailwood screamed past a young Nick Harris on his 250cc Honda, and a life-long passion was born. Harris has been at the centre of the sport for decades, getting to know the riders as individuals, seeings feuds unfold, champions made, careers and sometimes lives ended. We'll see the biggest podium stars up close, from Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts to Valentino Rossi, and we'll meet the mechanics behind them, the manufacturers who poured millions into the teams, and the organisers who, in the early days, ruthlessly compromised rider safety for profits. The drama has often been as tense off the track as on it. This is the book the motorcycling world has been waiting for.

Book 100 Years of Brooklands

Download or read book 100 Years of Brooklands written by John Pulford and published by Touchstone Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceived and designed by Peter Campbell working in conjunction with top advertising photographer Ron Bambridge and the Brooklands Museum, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centenary of the world's first custom-built motor racing circuit and home of British aviation. In the pioneering days of driving, competitive racing was banned on public roads in the United Kingdom. British automobile manufacturers could only watch as their European counterparts such as Fiat, Renault, and Peugeot gained valuable publicity from city-to-city races held around the continent, despite the inherent dangers. To create a base for UK motor sport, Hugh Fortescue Locke-King designed a circuit where cars could race in comparative safety. In 1906 he set to work to build a huge concrete banked oval bowl, 100 feet wide and more than two miles long, on land he owned in Surrey. This formidable engineering project was completed within 18 months and in 1907, Brooklands held its first race. It remained in constant use until 1939 and the cars and drivers who competed there have passed into legend. Huge, powerful cars from companies such as Duesenberg, Railton, Lorraine-Dietrich, and Bentley, and smaller cars from MG and Morgan, all took part in long distance races and record breaking. Pioneer drivers such as Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, and J. G. Parry-Thomas competed against fearless lady racers like Doreen Evans and Kay Petrie. It was John Cobb at the wheel of his mighty Napier Railton that established the ultimate circuit record of 143.33mph. The reputation of many motorcycle companies like Norton, Ariel, Zenith, and Douglas were established due to their exploits at Brooklands. Within the grounds of the concrete circuit, hangars were built alongside a small runway. From these buildings pioneer aviators Alliott Verdon-Roe, Tommy Sopwith, and Harry Hawker founded the British aviation industry. It became the home of the Vickers aircraft company and during WWII, numerous aircraft such as the Wellington bomber were built at Brooklands and Barnes Wallis designed his infamous "bouncing bomb." In later years, the circuit fell into disrepair but the production of aircraft continued, from the launch of the first passenger services to the design and creation of much of the first supersonic aircraft, Concorde. The award-winning photographs in this book record the design and engineering details of many of the cars, bikes, and aircraft that now form part of the famous Brooklands Museum, from the very earliest examples to more recent Formula 1 cars that form part of the collection. Shot in black and white, these images evoke a memory of a unique period in the history of automobile and aircraft development, and the unique race circuit that created its own niche in history.

Book excerpt: DIVA photographic chronology of some of the fastest, most stylish, and most individualized bikes in motorcycling history./divDIV/divDIVOriginally used as a slur against riders who used hopped-up motorcycles to travel from one transport café to another, “café racer describes a bike genre that first became popular in 1960s British rocker subculture—although the motorcycles were also common in Italy, France, and other European countries. The rebellious rock-and-roll counterculture is what first inspired these fast, personalized, and distinctive bikes, with their owners often racing down public roads in excess of 100 miles per hour (“ton up, in British slang), leading to their public branding as “ton-up boys. Café Racers traces café racer motorcycles from their origins in the mid-twentieth century all the way into modern times, where the style has made a recent comeback in North America and Europe alike, through the museum-quality portraiture of top motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter and the text of motorcycle culture expert Paul d’Orléans. Chronologically illustrated with fascinating historical photography, the book travels through the numerous ever-morphing and unique eras of these nimble, lean, light, and head-turning machines. Café Racers visually celebrates a motorcycle riding culture as complex as the vast array of bikes within it./div
