Book The History of Portrait Miniatures Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Portrait Miniatures Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by George Charles Williamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Portrait Miniatures, Vol. 1 Much original research has been necessary in the work, especially with regard to the English painters who in Stuart times worked in Scandinavia, and the Continental artists who have hitherto been generally neglected. The author has had access to State documents in many parts of Europe, some hitherto closed to inquirers, while bundles of letters, various note-books, catalogues, and privately printed volumes relating to families and pictures have been placed at his disposal for purposes of study. In the chapters dealing with Alexander Cooper, the exhibitors at the Royal Academy, the painters in enamel, and the foreign artists, it will be found especially that new ground has been broken. It should be mentioned that the discovery narrated in Chapter XIX., which entirely disproves a theory hitherto accepted, was not made until Vol. I. Had been printed. The illustrations have been taken from collections in all parts of the world and represent almost every important miniature painter by some characteristic example of his work. As far as possible signed examples have been selected as well as interesting portraits of important personages. Each miniature has been specially photographed for the purpose, and is reproduced full size in order that the student may have before him a truthful representation of the painting, great care having been taken to select works of definite authenticity. It is with respect to the loan of miniatures and the permission to have them reproduced that the author has to express so deep a debt of gratitude to owners and collectors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Samuel Cooper and the English Miniature Painters of the XVII CenturyIt is true that in the case of portraits of Royalty, it was customary to give them as diplomatic presents; this practice was carried to great length in the days of Le Grand Monarque, for example, when portraits of Louis were painted by the dozen, and were mounted on snuff boxes with settings of diamonds and other precious stones of a value proportioned to the status of the recipient of the gift.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andrew and Nathaniel Plimer, Miniature Painters: Their Lives and Their Works I have also to thank the Princess Hohenlohe, Countess Tolstoy, Mrs. Croker, Mrs. Marsh, Mrs. Stewart, Miss Ker, Miss Somers Cocks, and the Misses Swinburne. The University Of Oxford has kindly permitted me to illustrate the specimens in its possession, and the well-known dealers, Messrs. Duveen and Mr. E. M. Hodgkins, have placed at my disposal the rare and lovely miniatures which they have acquired from time to time, while to Mr. Hodgkins I owe especial thanks for the information which he has given me as to the early history of the group of The Three Graces at one time in his possession, and for many other acts of kindness with which he has assisted me in my work. I would like also to express to my friend Mr. Hallett Hyatt my thanks for the care with which he has photographed the numerous miniatures which I have entrusted to him, and for the close and constant attention which he has given to the work of the artists who have carried out so well our instructions as to the colouring of the facsimile plates. To the Lady Margaret crichton-stuart and to her manager, Miss Romana de Lazem, I am indebted for the preparation of the linen which was specially woven at Falkland for the binding, and which it has been a satis faction to adopt, inasmuch as its use encourages a hand - loom industry in Scotland, founded and carried on by Lady Margaret as a means of assisting her poorer neighbours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Engleheart, 1750-1829: Miniature Painter to George III They have not been as successful as they could have wished in compiling a list of the miniatures which can be traced as the work of either artist, and they appeal to all persons to whom this volume may come, to assist them in preparing a longer and fuller list of such works. There are many hundreds of miniatures named in the fee - book which they have been unable to find, and although they are aware that many have perished, especially in certain notable fires, yet they are convinced that there are still a large number belonging to private owners which remain undescribed, and they will be grateful to any persons who own such miniatures, or know of their existence, if they will kindly write and give particulars of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chats on Old Miniatures Acceding to the wish of my Publishers that the following pages should be included in a certain well known series, I have termed them Chats on Old Miniatures, but confess that I consider the title somewhat of a misnomer, inasmuch as I have been accustomed to regard a chat as a conversation between two or more persons interested in a given subject; whereas in this little volume it is obvious that I have done all the talking. Download or read book Portrait Miniatures written by George Charles Williamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study the dynamic art of portrait miniatures in Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors by art historian George Williamson, which surveys the works of the artists who made portrait miniatures. Williamson explains that the practice of portrait miniature originated in manuscript illustration, and may also be an outgrowth of treaties and maps, which often attached portraits of ambassadors for verification. "Miniature" in this context refers to the fact that the paintings were actually portable. The book begins with a 40-page essay and is followed by dozens of reproductions of the paintings discussed within the text. Williamson identifies Hans Holbein as the greatest painter of portrait miniatures and he presents several examples of Holbein's art, explaining what it is that makes the examples 'masterworks'. One of the portraits pictured in the book was on loan from J.P. Morgan's private collection and many of the portraits reproduced for the book were leant by their famous collectors. Englishmen Samuel Cooper is considered the greatest English practitioner of portrait miniatures. Little is known about Cooper's life even to this day, and Williamson connects the dots that are known about his life supported by evidence from the paintings. In the 18th Century, painters like Richard Cosway refined the techniques of Holbein, Cooper and others. Williamson helpfully notes that painters of the era were under different conditions than their predecessors. The public wanted paintings done faster and lighter, and with more charming and sensitive tones, and the reproductions attempt to illustrate this change in portrait miniatures. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors concludes with Sir William Ross, who many consider the last of the great miniature portrait artists. Although the art may have gradually died out, the examples cited in this book are inspirational and the art lives on in collections and museums around the world. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors was written for collectors, but anyone interested in art will enjoy the essay and paintings.
