Readers are introduced to local government as a lively and complexsite of political engagement. British local government is set in awider political, social and theoretical context. Throughout, theauthors argue that the attempt by the Thatcher and Majoradministrations of 1979-97 to push local government into the roleof merely administrating centrally defined policies was largelyshort-circuited. While outlining and explaining these changes andtheir effects, the authors argue that far from being defencelessvictims of central government, local authorities devised numerousstrategies to protect their independent policy-making role. Book The Development of English Local Government 1689 1835

Download or read book The Development of English Local Government 1689 1835 written by Beatrice Webb and published by Wren Press. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Beatrice and Sidney Webb was originally published in the early 20th century and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Development of English Local Government 1689-1835' is a work of political history that outlines the principles and mechanisms of local government. Beatrice Potter Webb was born in Gloucester, England in 1858. Both her mother and brother died early in her childhood leaving her to be raised by her father, Richard Potter. He was a successful businessman with large railroad interests and many influential friends in politics and industry whose company the young Beatrice would become accustomed to. Upon reaching adulthood, Potter moved to London and helped her cousin, Charles, a social reformer, research his book The Life and Labour of the People in London. It was during this time that she was introduced to Sidney James Webb, who later became her husband and collaborator. The Webb's, together, wrote eleven volumes of work which arguably shaped the way subsequent scholars thought about sociology. They also collaborated on more than 100 books and articles on the conditions of factory workers, and the economic history of Britain, among other subjects.

Book Local Government Today

Download or read book Local Government Today written by J. A. Chandler and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, finance, management and democratic framework for local government in Britain. This new edition has been substantially rewritten to encompass the many changes to the structure and function of the system since 2000, including developments flowing from the 2007 Local Government Act. The study discusses how, during the Blair years, local governments came to be seen once again as centrally important institutions within Britain’s political system. However, they are not seen as organizations that can function as separate agencies, undertaking all their duties "in-house." They are now required to work in partnership with the private, public and voluntary sectors to deliver local services and represent local interests. It is further argued that, for the first time in over a century, the barriers between civil servants and senior local government officers are being eroded as central government begins to incorporate leading local government officials into its decision-making processes. This established textbook also offers a comparative focus by showing how the British system differs from the structures for local governance in Western Europe and the United States.

Book Local Government in England

Download or read book Local Government in England written by Colin Copus and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the claim that English local government exists in one of the most centralised relationships with national government. Such a position fundamentally undermines any notion of local self-government and makes the term ‘government’ in local government a misnomer. The book will examine how the erosion of the autonomy, powers, roles, functions and responsibilities of English local government came about, the arguments of centralisers and localisers to support their view of the constitutional status of local government, and its overall role in the government of England. The book offers an antidote to the onward march of centralisation by offering a new vision of local government which emphasises both ‘local’ and ‘government’.
