Excerpt: ...the Black Mount Deer Forest eating my lunch, my rod stood erect beside me, and the casting line floated out in the breeze. I watched idly a large dragonfly, beating up and down in front of me, and was surprised to see him make for my tail fly, which he at last clutched with his legs and reposed upon. Being familiar with the workmanlike manner in which a dragonfly can sheer oil" a real fly's wing, I was unwilling that this one should pay similar attentions to my artificial one, so I took up the rod and shook him off. He returned several times, however, in the most pertinacious manner, until I laid the rOll flat on the ground. It isa coincidence that he invariably returned to the same fly each time, and that it was the one which about nine trout out of ten had been preferring likewise, though I cannot say that I saw anything like it flying about alive." In the 1Eschm' lw the eyes are contiguous, and the wings are very broad and long. Very large insects are comprised in this family, and some of the tropical examples measure as much as eight inches across the wings, while in our own country several species exceed half this in expanse. There are three British genera. The distinguishingfeature of this genus consists in the anal angle of the posterior wings, which is rounded in both sexes. It contains one British representative. 2. FoRMosUs-(Linden).---1'his is the largest British and European species of dragonfly, measuring 34 lines in length, and 46 lines in expanse. Book Atlas of the Dragonflies of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Atlas of the Dragonflies of Britain and Ireland written by Robert Merritt and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a complete set of distribution maps, and information on all the resident and more frequent immigration dragonflies in Britain and Ireland. It takes a look at the present and changing status of dragonfly species, provides insight into their distribution, gives descriptions to aid recognition, and summarizes aspects of behaviour and details of habitat. The information for the atlas comes from the Recording Scheme set up at the Biological Records Centre 25 years ago which, apart from deepening our understanding of dragonflies, has focused attention on the need for conservation measures. This book includes important and notable discoveries made in the course of the research, and provides a history of conservation in Britain and Ireland and the context and rationale for future efforts. It is a book which should be of interest not only to amateur naturalists and fieldworkers but also students and professional biologists.

Book British Dragonflies Odonata Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Dragonflies Odonata Classic Reprint written by William John Lucas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Dragonflies (Odonata) Dragons, indeed, are the larger kinds to the multitude of smaller insects, whose life is not seldom cut short to provide them a meal._ The second name is clearly but an indication of dislike; and to anyone acquainted with the habits of Dragonflies, a reason need scarcely be given for the bestowal of the third name, for they have a way, when handled, of turning the tip of their abdomen under them in a very threatening manner. As, however, no vestige of a sting exists, they are, of course, perfectly harmless in that respect, though they often make attempts, more or less unsuccessful, to bite the hand that holds them. Still, they may be handled without fear, as their jaws are but little adapted for attacking an extended surface.
