Book Handbook of Chemical Toxicity Profiles of Biological Species

Download or read book Handbook of Chemical Toxicity Profiles of Biological Species written by Sub Ramamoorthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-18 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes comprising this new handbook provide a unique resource for studies involving toxicity profiles in aquatic, avian, and mammalian species. The arrangement of material in alphabetical order by species allows the reader straightforward access to information on the effects of chemicals on various life forms. For each group of species, the acute and chronic (short- and long-term) toxicity data are arranged in descending order, enabling the reader to evaluate the relative toxicity of chemicals for any given species. This arrangement of data also indicates the relative importance of exposure routes. Toxicity profiles include LC50 values, cancer indices, and Virtually Safe Doses (VSDs) and are provided for each organ. In addition, the Handbook provides important comparisons of identical toxicity testing methods and duration of exposure (e.g., LC5096h) to arrive at a ratio. The ambient concentration and its ratio to the toxic level will assist in selecting the cut-off chemical. This approach helps the reader to maximize the use of resources and to generate data that are specifically relevant to the species and ecosystem under study. The species-specific approach in the Handbook of Chemical Toxicity Profiles of Biological Species makes it a powerful tool for a wide range of studies. It may be used, for example, in evaluating the status of endangered or other species, making impact assessments, developing regulatory controls, and determining important areas for future research.

Book Preventing Mental Illness

Download or read book Preventing Mental Illness written by Despo Kritsotaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of a diverse array of preventive strategies relating to mental illness, and identifies their achievements and shortcomings. The chapters in this collection illustrate how researchers, clinicians and policy makers drew inspiration from divergent fields of knowledge and practice: from eugenics, genetics and medication to mental hygiene, child guidance, social welfare, public health and education; from risk management to radical and social psychiatry, architectural design and environmental psychology. It highlights the shifting patterns of biological, social and psychodynamic models, while adopting a gender perspective and considering professional developments as well as changing social and legal contexts, including deinstitutionalisation and social movements. Through vigorous research, the contributors demonstrate that preventive approaches to mental health have a long history, and point to the conclusion that it might well be possible to learn from such historical attempts. The book also explores which of these approaches are worth considering in future and which are best confined to the past. Within this context, the book aims at stoking and informing debate and conversation about how to prevent mental illness and improve mental health in the years to come. Chapters 3, 10, and 12 of this book are available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com

Book Handbook of diet nutrition and the skin

Download or read book Handbook of diet nutrition and the skin written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have clearly shown that optimal diet and nutrition can prevent skin disease. Moreover, novel nutritional components have been used experimentally to treat skin conditions. However, the clinical application of these nutrients awaits confirmation. It is thus up to health care professionals to present new knowledge in order to provide advice or treatments for skin problems. This handbook provides, in a single volume, comprehensive coverage of the relation between skin and diet and nutrition in its broadest sense. The Handbook of diet, nutrition and the skin consists of sections on general aspects of skin, nutrition and diet, micronutrients, nutraceuticals, cancer and specific skin conditions. Unique features of each chapter in this volume include relevant and useful 'key facts' which highlight interesting or important findings of the specific subjects and 'summary points' that are designed to abstract each chapter in take home messages. This handbook will be of interest to a wide range of readers, such as dermatologists, doctors, nurses and those interested in, or working within the area of skin health. This will of course also include nutritionists and dieticians, dermatologists, cosmetic scientists, health workers and practitioners, college and university lecturers and undergraduate and graduate students.

Book Baran and Dawber s Diseases of the Nails and their Management

Download or read book Baran and Dawber s Diseases of the Nails and their Management written by Robert Baran and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition brings together five leading authorities in nail surgery in this well established and definitive textbook. The entire text is extended in this edition, and particular emphasis is placed on the advances in treatments that have taken place in recent years. Considerable strides have been made in the treatment of fungal diseases (onychomycoses) with the appearance of new therapeutic agents. There is also much greater coverage of nail surgery to reflect the increasing involvement of the dermatologist in this field. The section on nail tumours has also been expanded. Drs Baran and Dawber have been joined by David de Berker, Eckhart Haneke and Antonella Tosti on the editorial team. This move is representative of the major European contribution to the field of nail surgery in recent years. Significant contribution has come from Dr Elvin Zook, the eminent American hand surgeon, who has helped to ensure that the book is as relevant in North America as it is in Europe.
