Book excerpt: Excerpt from British India Dia I have considered it best not to include in foot-notes or in the body of this short Story of Indian History references to the many authorities I have consulted. To have done so would have broken the narrative and been of no service to the reader for whom the Story is intended. As far as possible original sources of information have been relied on, while all recent works of any importance on Indian History have been read or consulted. To the numerous works of Sir W. Wilson Hunter - including the "Rulers of India" Series he has edited - I would especially acknowledge indebtedness, and this with particular gratitude as it was his writings which first, over twenty-five years ago, inspired me with a love for India and its people. Book The Fauna of British India Including Ceylon and Burma

Download or read book The Fauna of British India Including Ceylon and Burma written by S. Maulik and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fauna of British India, Including Ceylon and Burma: Published Under the Authority of the Secretary of State for India in Council; Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, (Galerucinae) By the publication of this book - my third volume in this series - the self-imposed task of studying the Chrysomelidae of India, Burma and Ceylon is concluded. The enthusiasm of youth was responsible for the undertaking; but its fulfillment in middle age robs one of much of the satisfaction which would otherwise be felt. Time alters values. The beginnings and endings of all human undertakings are blurred, ill-defined, confused. Between the hours of eleven and twelve at night on the 27th June, 1787, after writing "the last lines of the last page" of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire in his summer house at Lausanne, Edward Gibbon took several turns in the covered walk of Acacias and regarded the peaceful prospect of the country, the lake and the mountains; all nature was silent. When the first emotions of joy at the recovery of his freedom had subsided, he records, "a sober melancholy as spread over his mind by the idea that he had taken his everlasting leave of an old and agreeable companion." I can tell appreciate the sense of freedom, but I confess I have not experienced any form of sadness on finishing my account of the "Rise and Spread of the Chrysomelidae of the Indian Empire," for the Chrysomelidae are always with me; they come from all parts of the world; they crowd upon me. Never did I realize better what power dead beetles can have over living man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There were yet great battles to be fought, great efiorts to be made, before the vast Empire of India fell altogether into British hands; but these were but the sequence of the events I have described. Book Early English Adventurers in the East Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early English Adventurers in the East Classic Reprint written by Arnold Wright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Adventurers in the East This work covers the period which intervened between Drake's circumnavigation of the world at the close of the sixteenth century and the founding of Calcutta at the end of the seventeenth century. Those were the years in which the initial efforts were made by the English to establish themselves in the East as traders. It was, as far as this part of the world is concerned, preeminently the age of the adventurer - the merchant adventurer, if you will, but still of the true adventurer who seeks fortune by his daring enterprise and his mother wit. For varied interest and picturesqueness, there is no more fascinating period than this in the whole of the Empire's past. Tragedy and comedy mingled their elements in what was in essence one of the most romantic dramas of the world's history. Men started out to build up a commercial connexion, and they ended in laying the foundations of a dominion over alien peoples more wonderful than that of Rome in her palmiest days. A fourth ofthe second share of the prize-money of Seringapatam was to be paid to the Nizam, and, with a prudent regard for -the interests of British trade, the Government of Madras thought it ex pedient to convert the amount into broadcloth, plate, china, glass, and the like, in order to initiate his Highness and his Court into a taste for the elegant superfluities of European living. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Eye, on English Life or Rambles of a Pilgrim Reformer These notes were jotted down during a brief holiday, mainly with the object of diverting thought. They are now offered toflthe British Public by a stranger in blood, in creed, and in language; by a student too early withdrawn from the advantages of systematic study. In contrasting the New Civilization with the Old, the writer cannot pretend always to maturity of ex perience or soundness of conclusion. All that he claims is a friendly conversation, in Open council, with Englishmen on the one hand and Indians on the other. That granted, he hopes these rambles in the field of Humanity may not prove altogether to be the ramblings of a vacant mind. Book India and the Frontier States of Afghanistan Nipal and Burma Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and the Frontier States of Afghanistan, Nipal and Burma, Vol. 1 IT is a common complaint that while the annals of In dia are of paramount importance to the people of England, there is no history which they seem less inclined to study. Greece and Rome, Egypt and Palestine, Assyria and Baby lon - countries which have long ceased to play a part in the drama of humanity - are the subjects of text-books in our schools and universities; while India, which is literally a modern reflex of the ancient world, and has moreover be come a part and parcel of the British empire, is to this day a sealed book to the masses. The essays of Lord Macaulay on Robert Olive and Warren Hastings are perhaps known to every English household; but they refer to mere episodes in the history, and are wanting in that familiarity with na tive character and forms of thought which is essential to a right appreciation of the great collision between Europe and Asia that has been going on in India for the last two centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation of an Indian Official The conditions of life in England are so different from the conditions of life in India, that I should not be surprised if the title Recreations, ' applied to the literary labour of this book, were gently cavilled at. And yet no other title would represent so accurately the circumstances under which its contents were written In Europe, ' if I may be allowed to quote from my own reflections in another work in Europe, where there is so much to tempt a man into the sun shine and Open air; where the streams invite the angler the slopes of the mountains, the botanist; the forests, the sportsman; and Where the merry laugh and innocent smiles of the daughters of the land invite all, it must require the virtue of a St. Anthony to persevere.
