Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: The Earl of Mayo The Life of Dalhousie dealt with the last accessions made to the British dominions in India under the East India Company. The present volume exhibits a memorable stage in the process by which those dominions, old and new, were welded together into the India of the Queen. Between the two periods a time of trial had intervened. Northern India, drained of its European regiments in spite of the protests of Dalhousie, seemed during the agony of 1857 to lie at the mercy of the revolted native troops. The Mutiny left behind it many political lessons, and two historical facts. These facts were that the Sepoys in whom the East India Company gloried as its chief strength had proved its chief danger, and that the ruling princes of India, whom the Company always regarded as a main source of danger, had proved a source of strength. I say the ruling princes of India. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Some Aspects of British Rule in India Classic Reprint written by Sudhindra Bose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Aspects of British Rule in India The usual point of view of the English rulers of India is that all is well in India. It may be frankly stated that this idea is generally accepted outside of India. In these pages the writer makes an attempt to present some aspects of British rule in India from the angle of the ruled. I may add that I am fully aware and duly appreciative of the many solid advantages of English rule; and if I have not dwelt on those aspects of Indian administration it is because I have considered it more important just now to point out certain evils and suggest constructive re forms. The policy of repression which characterizes the modern regime is, I believe, doing much harm. For the sake of the Em pire responsible English statesmanship should give earnest con sideration to the betterment of conditions in India. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Lord William Bentinck The youngest student of the growth Of the British power in India does not need to be told that we first went to that country as traders, and that our only representatives were merchants who thought nothing about the politics Of the country or Of interfering with the Native Powers, and who were exclusively engaged in their counting-houses. That condition Of things went on for nearly I 50 years, and when the competition with the French, who would have expelled all other European traders if the programme Of Dupleix had been realised, resulted in our unexpected triumph, accomplished by the genius of Clive, the East India Company - still cherishing above territorial possessions and military glory the commercial monopoly granted by Elizabeth and extended by Anne - preserved its character as a society Of merchants, esteeming its annual investment in country goods, whether in Bengal, Bombay, or Madras, of far higher importance than matters Of administration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Warren Hastings, and the Founding of the British Administration Warren hastings, the first governor-general of British India, was born at Churchill in Oxfordshire on the oth December, 1732. A few miles off, across the Worcestershire border, lay the manor of Dayles ford, which had belonged to Warren's forefathers from the days of Henry II down to the first years of George II. One conspicuous member of the family was that Lord Hastings, whose loyal services to the House of York were requited by Richard III with a violent death. On his successor Henry VII bestowed the Earldom of Huntingdon, a title which ere long fell dormant until, in 1819, the right to bear it was confirmed to Francis Hastings, as lineal descendant of the second Earl. From another branch of the same stock had Sprung the Earls of Pembroke, one of whom followed the banner of the Black Prince in the war between Peter the Cruel and his brother Henry of Castile. At the close of the great civil war which cost our first Charles both crown and life, the fortunes of the Daylesford family had undergone a sad eclipse. Download or read book A History of British India Vol 1 written by William Wilson Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British India, Vol. 1: To the Overthrow of the English in the Spice Archipelago Again the victors fought over the spoils. Those spoils lay chiefly not on the Indian coast, but in the Eastern Archipelago. India was then a half way house for the richer traffic of the Spice Islands. The third Act unfolds the strife between the two Protestant sea-powers for this prize. The Nether lands had long contained the marts by which the produce of the East, transhipped at Lisbon to Bruges, Antwerp, and Amsterdam, was distributed to N orthem and Central Europe. The capture of the Indian trade seemed to Holland a continuation of her just revolt against Portugal and Spain, a heritage from her hard subjection, and the seal of the independence which she had so dearly won. To England it was but the mercantile development, on an extended scale, of the sea enterprise of the Elizabethan adventurers. Sir John Lawrence's policy and action have been so much misunderstood that I have thought it best to give a plain narrative of facts with quotations from documents. It is essential to know not only what Sir John Lawrence said and did, but the time at which and the circumstances under which he said and did it. If my own conclusions be thought to be those of a disciple, the facts are there, and the reader will judge for himself.
