Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Imperialism The great increase of strength received by the British Empire in quite recent times, and the other changes which it has undergone, have hitherto been very inadequately realised even by those nations whose interests are most affected by them. The increase of territory and population following on the South African War, and the development of the political organisa tion (especially noticeable in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia) are not the only signs of these changes. Download or read book Imperialism written by J. A. Hobson and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Preface to the 1902 first edition of Imperialism: A Study, imperial critic J.A. Hobson demonstrates his prophetic talents by noting, just as the Victorian age was ending and World War I was brewing, that "Imperialism has been adopted as a more or less conscious policy by several European States and threatens to break down the political isolation of the United States." Though the book speaks mostly of British imperialism of the period, Hobson inevitably explores the general principals-and hidden motives-of imperialist policy. Hobson covers: . the commercial value of imperialism . imperialism as an outlet for population . economic parasites of imperialism . imperialist finance . moral and sentimental factors . and much more. With imperialism again a hot topic in the political arena, Hobson's treatise continues to lend invaluable, necessary insight into a complex ideology. British writer JOHN ATKINSON HOBSON (1858-1940) was an historian and economist as well as a popular lecturer on the topics. His other books include The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (1894), The Economics of Distribution (1900), The Economics of Unemployment (1922), and the autobiographical Confessions of an Economic Heretic (1938).

Book The Commercial Policy of the British Colonies and the McKinley Tariff Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Commercial Policy of the British Colonies and the McKinley Tariff Classic Reprint written by Earl Grey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Policy of the British Colonies and the McKinley Tariff In 1846 extreme discontent was manifested by a large part of the population. In the beginning of 1 852 their affections, which had appeared to be hopelessly alienated, had been regained, and all classes joined in evincing their attachment to the British Crown and to the institutions under which they lived the hate ful animosities and rancour which had been created by civil war and differences of national origin had almost disappeared, and the party divisions which still existed were not greater than those usually to be found in all free governments. A system of con stitutional government copied from our own had also been brought into full Operation, and was universally acquiesced in. An equally marked improvement had taken place in the material prosperity of the Province, as was shown by the fact that its credit in the London Stock Exchange had risen from a somewhat low level, and was fully as high as that of the United States. I will only add that I beg you to believe me your very sincere and earnest friend and well-wisher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Imperialism in the Eighteenth Century Not remiss in repressing infringements of their monopoly. Houstoun, a Scots surgeon em ployed for many years in the Company's factory at Cartagena, attributes the failure of its slave trade to its original exclusion from the cheapest slave-markets by the Royal African Company,1 but this disability ended in 1721 when an arrangement was made by which the South Sea Company engaged to procure all its slaves from the African Company at the rate of £22, 105. 'per piece' from the Gold Coast, Accra or Whydah, and £18, los. 'per piece' from Angola.2 In any case, it would not account for the unsuccessful voyages of the trading-ship. Nor can they be ascribed to its huge over capitalisation. In 1722 over was sunk in South Sea stock, and no doubt before the trading department was divided in 1723 from that which dealt with annuities, the con cessions of 1713 gave far too little scope for returns of sufficient magnitude to provide a considerable dividend on so vast a sum. Yet in fact the returns were inadequate even in relation to the comparatively small capital appropriated to the American trade, and this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trade Relations of the British Empire The original edition was hed almost simultane ously with the birth of on that has since raged so fiercely round the subject it deals with. It is hardly necessary to say, therefore, that it was written entirely free from the influence of the controversy, and in a much calmer and more judicial frame of mind than would be possible now. Reperusal of the work has convinced me that no new facts have been brought to light in the interval to modify the position I then took; rather am I more firmly of the opinion that it one. For this reason I have decided to text, with only such alterations as are necessary to make the incorporated statistics the latest obtainable; and whenever I have desired to make fresh comment, I have done so in the form of a special footnote, thus making the second edition as nearly as possible an exact reproduction of the first. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commerce and Industry: A Historical Review of the Economic Conditions of the British Empire From the Peace of Paris in 1815 to the Declaration of War in 1914, Based on Parliamentary Debates Seven Years' War which ended in 1763. We had largely increased our possessions in America and had established ourselves in India. In Europe all our potential commercial rivals were fully occupied with their internal and external troubles. Thus a golden Opportunity occurred of supplying the markets of the world with our manufactures and the produce of our colonies and dependencies. Notwithstanding the attempt of Buona parte to destroy our commerce during the Napoleonic wars, our maritime supremacy enabled us to maintain our commercial position, and after the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 we had command of every sea and control of the commerce of the world. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is the British Empire the Result of Wholesale Robbery? In any case, when the British Empire was being founded, the one enemy was Spain, and we may freely admit that if England did not succeed in snatching Spanish possessions, it was her poverty and not her will which was at fault. Spain, to our ancestors, repro sented the Scarlet Woman of the Apocalypse; and any measures taken against her would have seemed justified to the half-huecaneering, half-religious, temper of the time.
