Book Cyprus Under British Rule Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cyprus Under British Rule Classic Reprint written by Captain C. W. J. Orr and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyprus Under British Rule Not many years ago a newly appointed High Commissioner of Cyprus was received by the Secretary of State for the Colonies before leaving England to take up his duties. "There are in Cyprus I believe," said the Secretary of State, "a number of interesting and valuable antiquities. I trust that you will see that they are adequately preserved and cared for. I wish you a successful tour of office. Good-bye." It is in the hope that the interest in Cyprus taken by the general public may be somewhat less limited than that displayed by the responsible minister in the incident just recorded that I have written this book. My self-imposed task has been to describe only the somewhat dull and unromantic details of administration, and readers who desire to learn something of the interesting and valuable antiquities, or of the scenery of this beautiful island or the manners and customs of its inhabitants, must look elsewhere. For information about the antiquities, the delightful pages of Cesnola's monumental work should be consulted, and some idea of the romantic charm of the island and its beautiful scenery may be gleaned from Mr. Mallock's well-known book, An Enchanted Island. A veritable mine of information is contained in Messrs. Lukach and Jardine's Handbook of Cyprus, which discourses charmingly on all subjects, from the ancient history, geological formation, and ornithology of the island to the price of eggs, hotel charges, and the prevalence of fleas. In addition to such sources of information, a report is issued annually and presented to both Houses of Parliament, containing much useful information regarding the finance, trade, and general progress of the island. I know of no publication however which gives a connected account of British administration in Cyprus, or describes the conditions under which we have occupied it since 1878 and continue to hold it. Book Cyprus Under the Turks 1571 1878

Download or read book Cyprus Under the Turks 1571 1878 written by Harry Charles Luke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyprus Under the Turks, 1571-1878: A Record Based on the Archives of the English Consulate in Cyprus Under the Levant Company and After Thus it is that the records of Turkish rule in Cyprus are few. Its solitary chronicler, the Archimandrite Kyprianos, published his history of his native island in 1788 for the ninety years yet to elapse before the British occupation we have nothing in print beyond the descriptions of occasional travellers, and sundry references in histories of Greece to the rising of 1821. There exist, however, in the island certain archives of the British Consulate in Cyprus, beginning in 1710, and continuing, intermittently, until the abolition of the Consulate, consequent upon the British occupation, in 1878. These archives, examined here for the first time, enable us to fill, partially at all events, a gap in the history of Cyprus, which the island's distinguished past and promising future should no longer suffer to remain. Book A Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum written by John L. Myres and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum: With a Chronicle of Excavations Undertaken Since the British Occupation, and Introductory Notes on Cypriote Archaeology This Catalogue is the outcome of a suggestion made by His Excellency the High Commissioner for Cyprus to the Colonial Office in October, 1893, that advantage should be taken of the operations of the British Museum at Amathus, to secure a report on the condition of the Government Collection of Antiquities. The invitation was repeated by the Chief Secretary to Mr. Myres, a member of the British School of Archaeology in Athens, who was for a while in charge of the excavations at Amathus, and in the course of the summer of 1894 the whole Collection was cleaned, arranged, and catalogued. Dr. Max Ohnefalsch-Richter offered Mr. Myres his assistance at an early stage in the work, and revised some part of the Catalogue after Mr. Myres had left Cyprus. The long delay in the appearance of the work is due to a variety of causes, and not least to the difficulty of arranging for its publication and for the completion of the Plates at a distance from Cyprus. The compilers wish here to express their appreciation of the manner in which the Clarendon Press undertook the publication of the book, and to acknowledge their obligations, for help of many kinds, to English residents in Cyprus; to Professor W. M. Flinders Petrie, Professor E. A. Gardner, Mr. A. H. Smith, and Mr. D. G. Hogarth, for suggestions and corrections in detail; to Dr. A. S. Murray, for permission to report the acquisitions from the excavations of the British Museum at Kurion, 1895, and Salamis, 1896; and to Mr. H. B. Walters, who has kindly revised the whole of the proofs, and contributed the account of the excavations at Kurion and Maroni. Book A Handbook of Cyprus Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Cyprus Classic Reprint written by J. T. Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Cyprus In the preparation of the last section, the Editors, with due sanction, borrowed very largely from the Report for 1901-1902 of the High Commissioner, Sir W. Haynes Smith. Their best thanks are due to His Excellency for allowing them to set before their readers so vivid and authoritative a sketch of the progress made during the twenty-five years of British rule. Note To Fourth Issue No pains have been spared in the revision of the Handbook for the fourth issue (1905). The wants and wishes of tourists have been specially consulted. Many sections have been again enlarged, and in point of bulk the volume has probably reached its limit. The Editors can only hope to enhance the value of future issues by severer accuracy. They would wish it noted that the Handbook is in no sense an official publication. Note To Fifth Issue Every care has been taken to maintain and raise in the fifth issue (1907) of the Handbook the standard of completeness and accuracy which the Editors proposed to themselves in the first. The arrangement has been improved: the section on Mythology is new. Mr. C. V. Bellamy, Director of Public Works, Lagos, has kindly recast that on Geology, and Mr. H. S. Thompson that on the Flora. Additions have been made wherever the interest of the subject demanded them. For the last time the talents and industry of Sir J. T. Hutchinson, to which a wider field is now offered in Ceylon, have been at the service of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historical Geography of the British Colonies Vol 1

Download or read book Historical Geography of the British Colonies Vol 1 written by C. P. Lucas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Geography of the British Colonies, Vol. 1: The Mediterranean and Eastern Colonies These three dependencies are well placed for commanding both the trade of the Mediterranean and the route to the East and Australasia. Gibraltar is at the Western opening of the inland sea. Cyprus is at its Eastern extremity, nearer than any other of the Levantine islands to Egypt and the Suez Canal. Malta is in the centre, half-way between Gibraltar and Cyprus, and near the coasts of Italy and Tunis - the two points in the circle of the Mediterranean which in old days justified the advantages of their natural position by giving to Rome and Carthage pre-eminence over their neighbours. The distance by sea from Plymouth to Gibraltar is nautical miles; from Gibraltar to Malta 980 from Malta to Port Said about 940, and to Cyprus rather under miles; and from Cyprus to Port Said 250 miles. The whole aspect of the Mediterranean was changed by the opening of the Suez Canal. Viewing it under its modern conditions as the high road to the East, the three de pendencies of Great Britain in this sea are, taken together, a singularly strong chain of positions. But it must not be forgotten that the great colonizing nation of the present day holds points which in old times would have practically tapped the whole of the Mediterranean. While the world centred round the inland sea, and that sea was all in all, the parts of its shores, from which com merce and civilization flowed, were the coasts of Phoenicia and Asia Minor, the Delta of the Nile, the African pro montory of Carthage, and the three Northern peninsulas of Greece, Italy, and Spain. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Malta, St. Helena, Barbados, Cyprus, the Channel Islands, the British Army Navy: Historical, Political, and Geographical History Messrs. Kegan paul co. Have, I think, done a good service in publishing this Series. If our great Empire is to be preserved, it must be understood; and some of our wars would have been avoided if others had understood us better. The Boers of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State would never have attacked us if they had not been grievously and wickedly misled as to our intentions, and grossly ignorant of our strength and resources. The rapidity with which we have placed an im mense and well-equipped force in the field at a distance Of 6000 miles has indeed been a surprise to every one, and even I think to ourselves, though we knew that, in the words Of an American statesman, our flag waves on every sea and in every port, and the morning drum-beat of her soldiers, following the sun and keep ing company with the hours, circles the earth with one continuous strain of the martial airs Of England. To maintain that Army and Navy in full efficiency is a duty which I doubt not we Shall perform; but if our Empire is to be permanent it must rest not on force, but on justice, and be held together by the sym pathy and goodwill Of all its parts. The history Of the world is full Of warnings. Other great empires have risen and fallen again, and if we are to escape their fate, we must avoid their errors.
