Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Critic, Quarterly Theological Review and Ecclesiastical Record: April, 1829 It has often occurred to me as something wonderful, that, amongst the vast variety of books which are to be met with, on the important subject of Religion, there should still he wanted a manual for the information and direction of the Minister in his daily intercourse with sick persons and other members of his flock. Having been in the habit then, for several years, of remarking this defect of instruction with regard to practical divinity, and the whole business of a Parish Priest, and having myself, meanwhile, been thrown perpetually into the most interesting and awful scenes With my own Parishioners, I determined at length to take up my pen, and to commit to paper whatever, having passed under my personal observation, might be most likely to be useful to others of the same profession.-autlwr's Preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Critic, Quarterly Theological Review, and Ecclesiastical Record: April, 1827 With respect to the notes, I shall perhaps receive some thanks from my readers for bringing together, and inserting in my annotations, what ever I'found in Brodmus, Barnes, Heath, and Musgrave, which was likely to illustrate the play; and I conceive that the learned men, whose writings I have thus copied, would not think themselves ill-used, if I have not only omitted many of their erroneous interpretations and nu fortunate conjectures, but have pruned and abridged some of their notes, which were in themselves extremely good, but rather too wordy for the taste of the present day. In some cases also, when they quoted from old writers, I have given the citations in rather an altered form, and have generally adopted the references to the pages and lines of the editions which I have used myself.
