Book The Bellingham Bay British Columbia Railroad and Its Successors

Download or read book The Bellingham Bay British Columbia Railroad and Its Successors written by Karl Kleeman and published by . This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellingham Bay & British Columbia Railroad Company (BB&BC) was incorporated in Sacramento, California on June 21, 1883 by Pierre B. Cornwall and his associates to operate in Whatcom County, Washington Territory. By 1904, the BB&BC had become one of the busiest railroad lines of Whatcom County. The BB&BC tapped the very heart of the Mt. Baker timber, mining and rich agricultural communities of the Nooksack Valley. On January 1, 1913, the Bellingham & Northern, an independent subsidiary of the Chicago, Milwaukee & Puget Sound Railroad, took over the BB&BC. In 1917, the railroad was fully integrated into the Milwaukee system. The Milwaukee maintained much of the rail service of the BB&BC, so in many ways the BB&BC continued as Whatcom County's own railroad serving northwest Washington State until the Milwaukee went bankrupt in 1980. "For all those in the years to come who have never had the opportunity to witness the expansion and operation of the railroads when practically all traffic, both passenger and freight, was moved by the railroad, I will share with you the experience and information that I have had the opportunity to enjoy for over a period of more than 50 years working for the BB&BC and eventually the Milwaukee Road in Whatcom County, Washington State." ARTHUR M. "RUSTY" CLARK

Download or read book Iron Road West written by Derek Hayes and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Columbia wouldn't exist without the railway; the province was brought into the Canadian Confederation in 1871 in exchange for the promise of a transcontinental line to the West Coast. It was the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886 that set off economic development in the province, created the city of Vancouver and spurred others to build competing lines. In Iron Road West, Derek Hayes charts the development of the province through its railway lines, using a wealth of photographs and other visuals to show how rails were laid through the wild terrain that characterized much of British Columbia. As railways revolutionized the province, they inevitably incited fierce competition and personal hatreds, creating an exciting frontier-like environment that Hayes describes in vivid detail. The book also covers the emergence of the modern freight railway in British Columbia, including fully automated and computerized trains. An extensive section details our railway legacy, including preserved railways, locomotives and facilities that can still be visited today. Prolifically illustrated, Iron Road West will fascinate not only railway enthusiasts, but anyone with an interest in the history of the province.
