Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evocative exploration of the impact of the Mediterranean on British culture, ranging from the mid-eighteenth century to today Ever since the age of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, the Mediterranean has had a significant pull for Britons--including many painters and poets--who sought from it the inspiration, beauty, and fulfillment that evaded them at home. Referred to as "Magick Land" by one traveler, dreams about the Mediterranean, and responses to it, went on to shape the culture of a nation. Written by one of the world's leading historians of the Mediterranean, this book charts how a new sensibility arose from British engagement with the Mediterranean, ancient and modern. Ranging from Byron's poetry to Damien Hirst's installations, Robert Holland shows that while idealized visions and aspirations often met with disillusionment and frustration, the Mediterranean also offered a notably insular society the chance to enrich itself through an imagined world of color, carnival, and sensual self-discovery.

Book The Mobility of People and Things in the Early Modern Mediterranean

Download or read book The Mobility of People and Things in the Early Modern Mediterranean written by Elisabeth A. Fraser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries artists, diplomats, and merchants served as cultural intermediaries in the Mediterranean. Stationed in port cities and other entrepôts of the Mediterranean, these go-betweens forged intercultural connections even as they negotiated and sometimes promoted cultural misunderstandings. They also moved objects of all kinds across time and space. This volume considers how the mobility of art and material culture is intertwined with greater Mediterranean networks from 1580 to 1880. Contributors see the movement of people and objects as transformational, emphasizing the trajectory of objects over single points of origin, multiplicity over unity, and mutability over stasis.

Book Modern Art and the Idea of the Mediterranean

Download or read book Modern Art and the Idea of the Mediterranean written by Vojtech Jirat-Wasiuty?ski and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean is an invented cultural space, on the frontier between North and South, West and East. Modern Art and the Idea of the Mediterranean examines the representation of this region in the visual arts since the late eighteenth century, placing the 'idea of the Mediterranean' - a cultural construct rather than a physical reality - at the centre of our understanding of modern visual culture. This collection of essays features an international group of scholars who examine competing visions of the Mediterranean in terms of modernity and cultural identity, questioning and illuminating both European and non-European representations. An introductory essay frames the analysis in terms of a new spatial paradigm of the Mediterranean as a geographic, historical, and cultural region that emerged in the late eighteenth century, as France and Britain colonized the surrounding territories. Essays are grouped around three vital themes: visualization of the space of the new Mediterranean; varied uses of the classical paradigm; and issues of identity and resistance in an age of modernity and colonialism. Drawing on recent geographical, historical, cultural and anthropological studies, contributors address the visual representation of identity in both the European and the 'Oriental, ' the colonial and post-colonial Mediterranean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textiles were the second-most-traded commodity in all of world history, preceded only by grain. In the Ottoman Empire in particular, the sale and exchange of silks, cottons, and woolens generated an immense amount of revenue and touched every level of society, from rural women tending silkworms to pashas flaunting layers of watered camlet to merchants traveling to Mecca and beyond. Sea Change offers the first comprehensive history of the Ottoman textile sector, arguing that the trade's enduring success resulted from its openness to expertise and objects from far-flung locations. Amanda Phillips skillfully marries art history with social and economic history, integrating formal analysis of various textiles into wider discussions of how trade, technology, and migration impacted the production and consumption of textiles in the Mediterranean from around 1400 to 1800. Surveying a vast network of textile topographies that stretched from India to Italy and from Egypt to Iran, Sea Change illuminates often neglected aspects of material culture, showcasing the objects' ability to tell new kinds of stories.

Book Cross cultural Encounters Between the Mediterranean and the English speaking Worlds

Download or read book Cross cultural Encounters Between the Mediterranean and the English speaking Worlds written by Christine Reynier and published by Transatlantic Aesthetics and Culture. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean world has long had strong cultural links to Great Britain as well as to the United States. Through the analysis of artistic objects and critical writings that crystallise this encounter, the essays in this volume demonstrate the variety and complexity of the connections between two geographical zones and two or more cultures. Mediterranean cultures are shown to haunt American and British culture and artistic productions. The relation between British and American literature and art on the one hand, and Mediterranean arts on the other goes beyond the mere inscription of British and American culture in a Mediterranean tradition. British and American culture and art come out as unearthing a wide variety of Mediterranean artistic forms, renewing and transforming them. This collection shows how lively the encounter between the Mediterranean and the English-Speaking worlds still is. It highlights how much English as well as American culture and art owe today to the Mediterranean ones; how, mainly in the fields of literature and art, the two civilisations have never discontinued the dialogue they adumbrated centuries ago.

Book Mediterranean Heritage Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Mediterranean Heritage Routledge Revivals written by David Scott Fox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean Heritage, first published in 1978, offers a wide-ranging and perceptive discussion of the often concealed links between English culture and the common heritage of Western Europe: the Graeco-Roman legacy of the Mediterranean. There seems to have been no time when England has not been in touch with the civilisations of Greece and Italy: even Stonehenge, the most dramatic survivor of our remotest past, has a carved dagger of Mycenaean pattern among its ornaments. The pioneers of a distinctly English creative vision – Shakespeare, Sidney, Milton – clearly looked to Italy. Throughout the eighteenth century ‘grand tourists’ found southern Europe irresistible. The Romantics all became enraptured by the Mediterranean, and passed on their fascination in some of the most passionate poetry in English. Appearing at a time which England is more obviously a part of Europe than she has been for sixteen hundred years, Mediterranean Heritage provides valuable insights into the origins of our culture’s greatest achievements.

Download or read book Queer British Art written by Clare Barlow and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, the death penalty was abolished for sodomy in Britain; just over a century later, in 1967, homosexuality was finally decriminalised. Between these legal landmarks lies a century of seismic shifts in gender and sexuality for men and women. These found expression across the arts as British artists, collectors and consumers explored transgressive identities, experiences and desires. Some of these works were intensely personal, celebrating lovers or expressing private desires. Others addressed a wider public, helping to forge a sense of community at a time when the modern categories of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender were largely unrecognised. Ranging from the playful to the political, the explicit to the domestic, these works showcase the rich diversity of queer British art. This publication, the first to focus exclusively on British queer art, will feature sections on ambivalent sexualities and gender experimentation amongst the Pre-Raphaelites; the new science of sexology's impact on portraiture; queer domesticities in Bloomsbury and beyond; eroticism in the artist's studio and relationships between artists and models; gender play and sexuality in British surrealism; and love and lust in sixties Soho. 00Exhibition: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom (05.04.2017-01.10.2017).
