Book Alfred Lord Tennyson Selected Poetry

Download or read book Alfred Lord Tennyson Selected Poetry written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago Tennyson had begun to be dismissed as a poet whose work embodied everything the modern world was looking to leave behind. He still seems to readers to embody the substance of the Victorian era more fully than any other poet—but nowadays that is counted in his favor. Critics continue to find layers of complexity in poems once thought simplistic—while appreciating with fresh ears Tennyson’s aural mastery. This new edition includes the two long poems In Memoriam and Maud: A Monodrama in their entirety, all the short poems for which Tennyson remains famous, and a generous selection of his lesser-known poetry, together with a concise introduction to the poet and his work, and substantial headnotes for In Memoriam, Maud, and Idylls of the King. Unlike other editions that provide a selection of Tennyson’s work, this one includes both marginal glosses of obscure or archaic words and phrases, and extensive annotations at the bottom of each page. Appendices of visual material are also included.

Book Specimens of the British Poets

Download or read book Specimens of the British Poets written by Thomas Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of the British Poets: With Biographical and Critical Notices and an Essay on English Poetry With this, the Second Edition of these Specimens, their original Editor has had nothing to do, being prevented by 'other engagements from resuming the task of revising them. Various inaccuracies of the former edition have been removed in this, - some silently, for it had been burdening the book with use less matter to have retained them in the text, and pointed them out in a note, -while others, that entangled a thought or gave weight to it, have been al lowed to stand, but not without notes to stop the perpetuity of the error. With many of the now-discovered inaccuracies of the work in dates and mere minutiae, Mr. Campbell is not properly chargeable: some may be laid to the excursive nature of his task; others to the imperfect information of those days compared with ours, for we cannot have lived two-and-twenty years without important additions to our literary facts. Mr. Campbell's excellent taste in the selection of these Specimens has never been disputed; and of his Critical Disquisitions the best eulogy is in the fact that no work of any importance on our literary history has been written since they were published, without commendatory references to them; in particular, that they have been corrected and appealed to by Lord Byron, applaudingly quoted by Sir Walter Scott, and frequently cited and referred to by Mr. Hallam. Book From Goethe to Gundolf

Download or read book From Goethe to Gundolf written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Goethe to Gundolf: Essays on German Literature and Culture is a collection of Roger Paulin’s groundbreaking essays, spanning the last forty years. The work represents his major research interests of Romanticism and the reception of Shakespeare in Germany, but also explores a broader range of themes, from poetry and the public memorialization of poets to fairy stories - all meticulously researched, yet highly accessible. As a comprehensive examination of German literary history in the period 1700-1900, the collection not only includes accounts of the lives and work of Goethe, Schiller, the Schlegels, and Gundolf (amongst others), serving to nuance our understanding of these figures in history, but also considers diverse (and often underexplored) topics, from academic freedom to the rise of travel literature. The essays have been reformulated, corrected, and updated to add references to recent works. However, the core foundations of the originals remain, and just as when they were first published, the value of these essays – to researchers, students, and all those who are interested in German literary history – cannot be overstated.
