Such a sentiment, though in a very exaggerated form, gives an idea of the sort of views held by some so-called practical surgeons, often elderly, always opinionated, on the most difficult and perplexing sets of cases, whose anomalous symptoms are accounted for by the theory of concussion or wrench of the spine. The less educated, and consequently more easily amused portion of the general public, including about nine hundred and ninety-nine in every thousand, find in the reports of trials in which sufferers claim damages from railway companies an unceasing fund of amusement and a provocative of innocent mirth; while the lawyers have not only a magnificent field for the exercise of their wits, but a most profitable excuse for frequent "refreshers" in the long examinations and cross-examinations of opposing medical evidence. At the same time our endeavours will be directed rather to giving the reader some knowledge of the subject of brain chemistry than to furnish him with a complete historical account of all that has been written in reference to it.
