Book The Ships from Field s Point

Download or read book The Ships from Field s Point written by C. Roger Wallin, Commander, US Navy Reserve, retired and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ships from Field’s Point by C. Roger Wallin, Commander, US Navy Reserve, retired The Ships from Field’s Point commemorates an episode of local and regional history that occurred during World War II. At that time, an emergency shipyard was established at a waterfront neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The yard at Field’s Point employed as many as 21,000 workers, and it built three types of ocean-going ships to support the war effort. Since the end of the war, there have been occasional articles in local newspapers that recalled the past existence of the shipyard, but there never has been an adequate description of the sixty-four ships that were produced there. Author C. Roger Wallin has focused his attention on those ships. This book describes the three types of ships and explains how they were armed and equipped to perform their assigned missions. It also addresses the wartime operational history of the ships, and continues with their use during the post war years. Finally, an appendix is included that indicates the significant milestone dates and the ultimate disposition of each of the 64 vessels.

Book Commonwealth Cruisers 1939 45

Download or read book Commonwealth Cruisers 1939 45 written by Angus Konstam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 20th century Britain's largest colonies established their own small naval presence, and their ships fought alongside the Royal Navy during World War I. These fleets were expanded during the inter-war years, and in 1939 the Royal Australian Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy willingly joined the fight on behalf of the British Commonwealth. For the most part these small navies consisted of a few cruisers and destroyers, designed to protect territorial waters and local sea lanes. However, these warships and their crews soon found themselves involved in a global war, and consequently were called upon to fight wherever they were needed, against the Germans, the Italians and the Japanese. This book tells the story of these small cruiser forces, and the men who served the Allied cause so well during the long and brutal war at sea.

Book The China Burma India Campaign 1931 1945

Download or read book The China Burma India Campaign 1931 1945 written by Eugene L. Rasor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-03-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The China-Burma-India campaign of the Asian/Pacific war of World War II was the most complex, if not the most controversial, theater of the entire war. Guerrilla warfare, commando and special intelligence operations, and air tactics originated here. The literature is extensive and this book provides an evaluative survey of that vast literature. A comprehensive compilation of some 1,500 titles, the work includes a narrative historiographical overview and an annotated bibliography of the titles covered in the historiographical section. Following an introductory historical essay and a chronology, the historiographical narrative covers land, water, underwater, air, and combined operations, intelligence matters, diplomacy, and logistics and supply. It also examines the memoirs, diaries, autobiographies, and biographies of the personnel involved. Such cultural topics as journalism, fiction, film, and art are analyzed, and existing gaps in the literature are looked at. The bibliography provides both descriptive and evaluative annotations.

Book World War II Sea War Volume 13 New Guinea Normandy and Saipan

Download or read book World War II Sea War Volume 13 New Guinea Normandy and Saipan written by Don Kindell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-12-08 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April, May and June 1944, there were three major areas of naval conflict: In New Guinea: United States (US) and Australian forces landed at Aitape and Hollandia, then at Arare, Wakde and Biak Island. In Europe: The battle for the control of the English Channel heated up. The German navy attacked what they thought was an Allied convoy along the English southwestern coast. They had actually stumbled upon Operation TIGER, the Allied training exercise for the upcoming Normandy landing. RAF Bomber Command mined Biscay, Bretagne, La Pallice, Lorient, Brest, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Den Helder, Texel, the Friesian Islands, the German Bay, Kattegat, Kiel, Swinemünde, Gotenhafen, and Pillau. The Allies initiated Operation NEPTUNE to conceal the real Allied landing location from the Germans. All this culminated in the Allied landing in Normandy, France, in Operation OVERLORD. In the Pacific: The US landed on Saipan, considered Japanese territory, in Operation FORAGER, which caused the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Book Rising Sun Falling Skies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey Cox
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2014-03-20
  • ISBN : 1472808347
  • Pages : 506 pages

Download or read book Rising Sun Falling Skies written by Jeffrey Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jeffrey Cox conducts a thorough and compelling investigation of the Java Sea Campaign, the first major sea battle of the Pacific War, which inflicted huge costs on the Allies and set the stage for Japan's rout across the Pacific and Indian oceans. Few events have ever shaken a country in the way that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor affected the United States. The Japanese forces then continued to overwhelm the Allies, attacking Malaya with its fortress of Singapore, and taking resource-rich islands in the Pacific in their own blitzkrieg offensive. Allied losses in these early months after America's entry into the war were great, and among the most devastating were those suffered during the Java Sea Campaign, where a small group of Americans, British, Dutch, and Australians were isolated in the Far East – directly in the path of the Japanese onslaught. It would be the first major sea battle of World War II in the Pacific.

Book Destroyers At Normandy Naval Gunfire Support At Omaha Beach Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Destroyers At Normandy Naval Gunfire Support At Omaha Beach Illustrated Edition written by William B. Kirkland and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes numerous maps and illustrations. This monograph provides first-hand accounts of Destroyer Squadron 18 during this critical battle upon which so much of the success of our campaign in Europe would depend. Their experience at Omaha Beach can be looked upon as typical of most U.S. warships engaged at Normandy. On the other hand, from the author’s research it appears evident that this destroyer squadron, with their British counterparts, may have had a more pivotal influence on the breakout from the beachhead and the success of the subsequent campaign than was heretofore realized. Its contributions certainly provide a basis for discussion among veterans and research by historians, as well as a solid, professional account of naval action in support of the Normandy landings.
