Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the visionary scientists who invented the future In 1969, Princeton physicist Gerard O'Neill began looking outward to space colonies as the new frontier for humanity's expansion. A decade later, Eric Drexler, an MIT-trained engineer, turned his attention to the molecular world as the place where society's future needs could be met using self-replicating nanoscale machines. These modern utopians predicted that their technologies could transform society as humans mastered the ability to create new worlds, undertook atomic-scale engineering, and, if truly successful, overcame their own biological limits. The Visioneers tells the story of how these scientists and the communities they fostered imagined, designed, and popularized speculative technologies such as space colonies and nanotechnologies. Patrick McCray traces how these visioneers blended countercultural ideals with hard science, entrepreneurship, libertarianism, and unbridled optimism about the future. He shows how they built networks that communicated their ideas to writers, politicians, and corporate leaders. But the visioneers were not immune to failure—or to the lures of profit, celebrity, and hype. O'Neill and Drexler faced difficulty funding their work and overcoming colleagues' skepticism, and saw their ideas co-opted and transformed by Timothy Leary, the scriptwriters of Star Trek, and many others. Ultimately, both men struggled to overcome stigma and ostracism as they tried to unshackle their visioneering from pejorative labels like "fringe" and "pseudoscience.? The Visioneers provides a balanced look at the successes and pitfalls they encountered. The book exposes the dangers of promotion—oversimplification, misuse, and misunderstanding—that can plague exploratory science. But above all, it highlights the importance of radical new ideas that inspire us to support cutting-edge research into tomorrow's technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent world events have caused many people to wonder about the Second Coming of Christ. Will Jesus return and, if so, how soon? How will He come? What will happen before He does? Many people have developed such a fascination in the Second Coming that it borders upon escapism. They devour popular books devoted to giving the latest news of prophetic fulfillment. For them, millennial fever is rising. Sadly, most of these books offer only shallow and sensationalistic teaching. Thousands of escape all that lies ahead. There is a real need for an in-depth and understandable book about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In The Door of Judgment, we examine nearly every Scripture that has to do with prophecies of the end-times. Each chapter has a corresponding compilation of supporting verses located in the appendix. We will fit these together like an elaborate jigsaw puzzle, until a beautiful and complete picture of the Second Coming appears. Along the way, the reader will learn the two undeniable and unmistakable signs that show us Jesus is coming back soon. By the end, he will gently come to the awareness that the common evangelical understanding reader will of pretribulationism is not clearly seen in the Scriptures. Without being argumentative, the book demonstrates the weaknesses of the dispensational approach to end-time prophecy, while returning us to the original historic position of the first and second century church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban and natural environments are often viewed as entirely separate entities — human settlements as the domain of architects and planners, and natural areas as untouched wilderness. This dichotomy continues to drive decision-making in subtle ways, but with the mounting pressures of global climate change and declining biodiversity, it is no longer viable. New technologies are promising to provide renewable energy sources and greener designs, but real change will require a deeper shift in values, attitudes, and perceptions. A timely and important collection, The Natural City explores how to integrate the natural environment into healthy urban centres from philosophical, religious, socio-political, and planning perspectives. Recognizing the need to better link the humanities with public policy, The Natural City offers unique insights for the development of an alternative vision of urban life.

  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Educational Futures written by Ivana Milojevic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview and analysis of current tensions, debates and key issues within OECD nations, particularly Australia, the USA, Canada and the UK, with regard to where education is and should be going. Using a broad historical analysis, it investigates ideas and visions about the future that are increasingly evoked to support arguments about the imminent demise of the dominant modern educational model. Focusing neither on prediction nor prescription, this text suggests the goal is an analysis of the ways in which the notion of the future circulates in contemporary discourse. Five specific discourses are explored: globalisation; new information and communications technologies; feminist; indigenous; and spiritual. The book demonstrates the connections between particular approaches to time, visions of the future, and educational visions and practices. The author asserts that every approach to educational change is inherently based on an underlying image of the future.

Book excerpt: Fractal patterning is nature's way of economics, always tying back to previous iterations of evolved energy/ matter. Ecology, Eucharist and economy are of a piece in the "fractal iterations" of symbiotic patterning. Holistic living is a patterned process of "fractal rationality", the mindful linking of ecology, economy and Eucharist. Mindfulness is religiously consistent by way of the harmonized linking of communication, consciousness and conscience, what is "Trimorphic Resonance". There is no renewable wealth except that which cosmic energy/ substance provide. The balance that sustains codependent life is natural economy; waste of resources adversely affects the whole system. Nature's adjustment can profoundly unsettle - as the signs of the times show. Humankind has not yet grasped the control evolution holds over interdependent life-systems. Runaway Corporate Capitalism (profit above all else) is totally insensitive to natural ecology/ economy and to the immorality of out-of-control appetite. There is, however, a corrective that dampens appetites for power, profit and control, and that is Eucharistic Altruism. Eucharistic Altruism is a self-aware consciousness that owns a true sense of connection to the vital economics of natural ecology. Nature's economy functions on the principle that life supposes death as death supposes life. The way of renewal is for present life to pass on to future life lessons learned. Exploitation-for-profit is inconsiderate of the future in its self-interest passion. When Eucharistic Altruism controls, the uplift of evolution enables future wellbeing by sustaining nature. Eucharistic Altruism is the virtue that compels true religion - the hallmark of ecumenism.
