Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's coastline is extraordinarily rich in its diversity, with its many inlets, bays, coves, promontories, archipelagos and islands. Every mood of the British coastline has been faithfully recorded, from the jagged teeth of the Needles on the Isle of Wight and the strange red archway of Durdle Door in Dorset to the flat stretches of Marshland that border the East Anglian coast. The book divides Britain's coastline into her shipping areas and illustrates the secret coves and bays of these coasts as well as the more well-known sights. The text describes in full detail the places that are illustrated and chronicles their tales of age-old bravery, shipwrecks, sea rescues, smugglers, legends, sea battles and monsters as well as such modern-day items as power stations, ship-building, the loss of many of Britian's piers and the brave work carried out by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Download or read book The Development of British Naval Aviation 1914 1918 written by Alexander Howlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) revolutionized warfare at sea, on land, and in the air. This little-known naval aviation organization introduced and operationalized aircraft carrier strike, aerial anti-submarine warfare, strategic bombing, and the air defence of the British Isles more than 20 years before the outbreak of the Second World War. Traditionally marginalized in a literature dominated by the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force, the RNAS and its innovative practitioners, nevertheless, shaped the fundamentals of air power and contributed significantly to the Allied victory in the First World War. The Development of British Naval Aviation utilizes archival documents and newly published research to resurrect the legacy of the RNAS and demonstrate its central role in Britain’s war effort.

Download or read book I Seek My Prey In The Waters The Coastal Command At War written by Sqn. Ldr. Tom Dudley-Gordon and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE beginnings of Coastal Command are obscure. It is held by some that, in embryo, it consisted of five officers and four Bleriot monoplanes that were detached from Netheravon in August 1914 for coastal reconnaissance duties. At this time, however, there was a flourishing Naval Air Service which had its being up and down our coasts and which could properly be regarded as a coastal air force... In 1918 the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were amalgamated into the Royal Air Force. By this time there were many aircraft of all sorts employed on coast-watching, convoy protection and the attack of submarines, and very effectively they carried out their duties. After the war this coastal organization was much reduced in size, being composed of a few flying-boat squadrons and one or two torpedo-carrying units. In addition, the disembarked squadrons of the carrier-borne air force were controlled and administered by what was then known as the Coastal Area. When, however, under the menace of Hitlerism, the expansion of the Royal Air Force took place, Coastal Area, by that time renamed Coastal Command, took its share. Working in close co-operation with the Royal Navy, the Command developed the activities which are so well described in this book. Coastal Command has always been a rather independent part of the Royal Air Force. Its operations have an element of mystery about them which is a trifle aggravating to the rest of the Service. It has a jealous spirit of its own which makes its personnel, when they are posted away, hanker to come back and strive and contrive to that end unceasingly. It is immensely proud of its job and of the way it does it. In fact, it has all the attributes of a first-class team. Long may it flourish as such.

Download or read book Sustainable Energy without the hot air written by David JC MacKay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enlightening, best-selling book on understanding sustainable energy and how we can make energy plans that add up. If you've ever wondered how much energy we use, and where it comes from – and where it could come from – but are fed up with all the hot air and 'greenwash', this is the book for you. Renewable resources are 'huge', but our energy consumption is also 'huge'. To compare 'huge' things with each other, we need numbers, not adjectives. Sustainable Energy – without the hot air addresses the energy crisis objectively, cutting through all the contradictory statements from the media, government, and lobbies of all sides. It gives you the numbers and the facts you need, in bite-sized chunks, so you can understand the issues yourself and organises a plan for change on both a personal level and an international scale – for Europe, the United States, and the world. In case study format, this informative book also answers questions surrounding nuclear energy, the potential of sustainable fossil fuels, and the possibilities of sharing renewable power with foreign countries. Written by David MacKay, who was an esteemed Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge and Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Department of Climate Change, this is an uplifting, jargon-free and informative read for all. In it, David debunks misinformation and clearly explains the calculations of expenditure per person to encourage people to make individual changes that will benefit the world at large. If you've thrown your hands up in despair thinking no solution is possible, then read this book - it's an honest, realistic, and humorous discussion of all our energy options.
