Book Protection Patronage or Plunder British Machinations and B uganda s Struggle for Independence

Download or read book Protection Patronage or Plunder British Machinations and B uganda s Struggle for Independence written by Apollo N. Makubuya and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the scramble for Africa, Britain took a lion’s share of the continent. It occupied and controlled vast territories, including the Uganda Protectorate – which it ruled for 68 years. Early administrators in the region encountered the progressive kingdom of Buganda, which they incorporated into the British Empire. Under the guise of protection, indirect rule and patronage, Britain overran, plundered and disempowered the kingdom’s traditional institutions. On liquidation of the Empire, Buganda was coaxed into a problematic political order largely dictated from London. Today, 56 years after independence, the kingdom struggles to rediscover itself within Uganda’s fragile politics. Based on newly de-classified records, this book reconstructs a history of the machinations underpinning British imperial interests in (B)Uganda and the personalities who embodied colonial rule. It addresses Anglo-Uganda relations, demonstrating how Uganda’s politics reflects its colonial past, and the forces shaping its future. It is a far-reaching examination of British rule in (B)uganda, questioning whether it was designed for protection, for patronage or for plunder.

Book Learning and Teaching British Values

Download or read book Learning and Teaching British Values written by Sadia Habib and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages with important debates about multicultural British identities at a time when schools are expected to promote Fundamental British Values. It provides valuable insight into the need to investigate fluid and evolving identities in the classroom. What are the implications of Britishness exploration on young people’s relationships with and within multicultural Britain? What are the complexities of teaching and learning Britishness? Emphasis on student voice, respectful and caring dialogue, and collaborative communication can lead to meaningful reflections. Teachers often require guidance though when teaching about multicultural Britain. The book argues that when students have safe spaces to share stories, schools can become critical sites of opportunity for reflection, resistance and hopeful futures. Foreword by Professor Vini Lander

Book Class and Contemporary British Culture

Download or read book Class and Contemporary British Culture written by A. Biressi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does culture articulate, frame, organise and produce stories about social class and class difference? What do these stories tell us about contemporary models of success, failure, struggle and aspiration? How have class-based labels been revived or newly-minted to categorise the insiders and outsiders of the new 'age of austerity'? Drawing on examples from the 1980s to the present day this book investigates the changing landscape of class and reveals how it has become populated by a host of classed figures including Essex Man and Essex Girl, the 'squeezed middle', the 'sharp-elbowed middle class', the 'feral underclass', the 'white working class', the 'undeserving poor', 'selfish baby boomers' and others. Overall, the book argues that social class, although complicated and highly contested, remains a valid and fruitful route into understanding how contemporary British culture articulates social distinction and social difference and the significant costs and investments at stake for all involved.
