Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Britain the Second World War exists in popularmemory as a time of heroic sacrifice, survival and ultimate victory overFascism. In the Irish state the years 1939-1945 are still remembered simplyas 'the Emergency'. Eire was one of many small states which in 1939 chosenot to stay out of the war but one of the few able to maintain itsnon-belligerency as a policy. How much this owed to Britain's militaryresolve or to the political skills of amon de Valera is a key questionwhich this new book will explore. It will also examine the tensions Eire'spolicy created in its relations with Winston Churchill and with the UnitedStates. The author also explores propaganda, censorship and Irish statesecurity and the degree to which it involves secret co-operation withBritain. Disturbing issues are also raised like the IRA's relationship toNazi Germany and ambivalent Irish attitudes to the Holocaust.Drawing uponboth published and unpublished sources, this book illustrates the war'simpact on people on both sides of the border and shows how it failed toresolve sectarian problems on Northern Ireland while raising higher thebarriers of misunderstanding between it and the Irish state across itsborder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland and Partition: Contexts and Consequences brings together multiple perspectives on this key and timely theme in Irish history, from the international dimension to its impact on social and economic questions, alongside fresh perspectives on the changing political positions adopted by Irish nationalists, Ulster Unionists, and British Conservatives. It examines the gestation of partition through to its implementation in 1921 as well as the many consequences that followed. The chapters, written by experts based in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the United States, include new scholars alongside contributions from authorities in their fields. Together, they consider partition from a variety of often overlooked angles, from its local impact on the ground through to its place in the post-1918 international order and diplomatic relations, its implications for political violence and security policy, and its consequences for sport and economics, through to its capacity to divide both nationalism and unionism from within. This book places the current questions about the future of partition, resulting from ‘Brexit’ and the centenary of partition 2021, in a fuller perspective. It is relevant to those with an interest in Irish History and Irish Studies, as well as British History, European History and Peace Studies.

Book excerpt: Ireland's History provides an introduction to Irish history that blends a scholarly approach to the subject, based on recent research and current historiographical perspectives, with a clear and accessible writing style. All the major themes in Irish history are covered, from prehistoric times right through to present day, from the emergence of Celtic Christianity after the fall of the Roman Empire, to Ireland and the European Union, secularism and rapprochement with the United Kingdom. By avoiding adopting a purely nationalistic perspective, Kenneth Campbell offers a balanced approach, covering not only social and economic history, but also political, cultural, and religious history, and exploring the interconnections among these various approaches. This text will encourage students to think critically about the past and to examine how a study of Irish history might inform and influence their understanding of history in general.

Book Ireland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seán Ó Nualláin
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2012-12-04
  • ISBN : 1443843822
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Ireland written by Seán Ó Nualláin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, the socialist writer James Connolly ordered an armed group to march down Dame Street in Dublin, in what became a citizens’ occupation of Dublin city centre. As Connolly hoped, the shockwave launched by the doomed uprising kindled fires of revolution throughout the colonies during all of the 20th century. On 18 November 2010, a small unescorted group of IMF technocrats walked down Dame Street – home of their goal, the Irish Central Bank – to articulate the re-colonisation of Ireland. Ireland: A Colony Once Again first explains the lack of public protest by the Irish in the face of a grim future. In particular, the author argues that the IMF move simply cemented in place a deal done long ago between globalized corporatism and Irish Catholic nationalism. Almost all sectors of Irish civil society that might have offered resistance, including Connolly’s Labour movement, had long ago been bought off or destroyed. However, the vacuum created by the perceived fall of the neoliberal world order in 2008 affords an opportunity to re-construct Ireland. In particular, the author argues that the mechanisms used to buttress the current order – from the state security apparatus to the mainstream media – have a less firm hold on power than appears at first sight to be the case. Furthermore, given its history, culture and geographic location, Ireland is very well placed to re-imagine and re-invent itself in a short space of time, in freedom and joy.
