Book The Urim and Thummim

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cornelis Van Dam
  • Publisher : Eisenbrauns
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780931464836
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book The Urim and Thummim written by Cornelis Van Dam and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1997 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first exhaustive study of the Urim and Thummim since 1824, and in this book Van Dam sets out to rectify that lack of attention. He investigates all of the biblical data concerning this enigmatic oracular means of high-priestly revelation and its connection, in the historical books of the Old Testament, with the common phrase "to enquire of Yahweh/God." After surveying the history of interpretation and the treatment of the terms in the various versions and translations, Van Dam examines the implications of similar oracular devices and priestly dress within the larger cultural context of the ancient Near East. He places the Urim and Thummim within the context of divine revelation and human inquiry and the corollary probibition of divination in ancient Israel. He concludes that the breastpiece functioned as a pouch to hold the Urim and Thummim, which therefore clearly were tangible objects. Van Dam traces the use of this oracular instrument through the early monarchy under David--from the time of Joshua through the early monarchy under David--and its apparent disappearance by the time of the "classical" prophets, where a shift to primarily verbal oracles occurs. Concurrent with his study of the history of the oracle, Van Dam interacts with current discussion on the nature and process of God's revelation to humankind.

Book excerpt: Interest in the Seven Commandments for the Children of Noah (Non-Jews) is growing, and great numbers of people around the world have committed themselves to observe these commandments. Until publication of The Divine Code (now in the Fourth Edition), a comprehensive, clear, and expertly researched guide for observance and study of these Divine precepts was lacking. The Divine Code is the result of an historic project by Ask Noah International. Originally published in Hebrew by Rabbi Moshe Weiner and endorsed by prominent Torah scholars, including two Chief Rabbis of Israel, it examines the Torah-law foundations and details of the Noahide precepts. Unique among the other books on this subject, this authoritative text is footnoted with extensively researched Talmudic and post-Talmudic sources, and supplied with additional explanations and enlightening Editor's Notes throughout. It identifies and applies the fundamental principles by which the practical requirements for righteous living are determined for pious Non-Jews. This Fourth Edition encompasses all of the Seven Noahide Commandments and their principles and offshoots. It is the authorized translation according to Rabbi Weiner's personal review and editing. The book contains eight parts, beginning with Fundamentals of the Faith, followed by the seven parts which provide comprehensive explanations of each of the Seven Noahide Commandments and their many offshoots. Also included are several section introductions by the renown Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet, o.b.m., a leading Canadian rabbi and author of many popular books on Torah-based spirituality and philosophy. Additional introductions were contributed by Joe M. Regenstein, Ph.D., a leading expert on guidelines in the meat industry for improved animal welfare; Arthur A. Goldberg, J.D., author of Light in the Closet and Director of J.I.F.G.A.; Rabbi Shimon D. Book A Covenant of Creatures

  • Author : Michael Fagenblat
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2010-06-03
  • ISBN : 0804774684
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book A Covenant of Creatures written by Michael Fagenblat and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am not a particularly Jewish thinker," said Emmanuel Levinas, "I am just a thinker." This book argues against the idea, affirmed by Levinas himself, that Totality and Infinity and Otherwise Than Being separate philosophy from Judaism. By reading Levinas's philosophical works through the prism of Judaic texts and ideas, Michael Fagenblat argues that what Levinas called "ethics" is as much a hermeneutical product wrought from the Judaic heritage as a series of phenomenological observations. Decoding the Levinas's philosophy of Judaism within a Heideggerian and Pauline framework, Fagenblat uses biblical, rabbinic, and Maimonidean texts to provide sustained interpretations of the philosopher's work. Ultimately he calls for a reconsideration of the relation between tradition and philosophy, and of the meaning of faith after the death of epistemology.

Book Interpreting Maimonides

Book excerpt: Moses Maimonides (1138–1204) was arguably the single most important Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages, with an impact on the later Jewish tradition that was unparalleled by any of his contemporaries. In this volume of new essays, world-leading scholars address themes relevant to his philosophical outlook, including his relationship with his Islamicate surroundings and the impact of his work on subsequent Jewish and Christian writings, as well as his reception in twentieth-century scholarship. The essays also address the nature and aim of Maimonides' philosophical writing, including its connection with biblical exegesis, and the philosophical and theological arguments that are central to his work, such as revelation, ritual, divine providence, and teleology. Wide-ranging and fully up-to-date, the volume will be highly valuable for those interested in Jewish history and thought, medieval philosophy, and religious studies.
