Book Bristol Business and Industry

Download or read book Bristol Business and Industry written by Lynda J. Russell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bristol was incorporated in 1785 and quickly became recognized as a clock-manufacturing center and home of the E. Ingraham Company's "dollar watch." The town grew with the many immigrant workers who arrived to work for local knitting mills, spring companies, and brass manufacturers. By the 1890s, the strong growth of the town brought an influx of people with different skills who established the Bristol Press, banks, local neighborhood shops and markets, and service industries. In 1920, Bristol Nurseries created new varieties of chrysanthemums that eventually made Bristol known as the "Mum City." Redevelopment in the 1960s brought the new Bristol Plaza and changes on Farmington Avenue. In 1979, ESPN started its first broadcast in its new home on Middle Street. With the completion of the new Route 72, Bristol will today continue to offer new opportunities for business and industry to grow.

Book I ll Have What She s Having

Download or read book I ll Have What She s Having written by R. Alexander Bentley and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we learn from those around us: an essential guide to understanding how people behave. Humans are, first and foremost, social creatures. And this, according to the authors of I'll Have What She's Having, shapes—and explains—most of our choices. We're not just blindly driven by hard-wired instincts to hunt or gather or reproduce; our decisions are based on more than “nudges” exploiting individual cognitive quirks. I'll Have What She's Having shows us how we use the brains of others to think for us and as storage space for knowledge about the world. The story zooms out from the individual to small groups to the complexities of populations. It describes, among other things, how buzzwords propagate and how ideas spread; how the swine flu scare became an epidemic; and how focused social learning by a few gets amplified as copying by the masses. It describes how ideas, behavior, and culture spread through the simple means of doing what others do. It is notoriously difficult to change behavior. For every “Yes We Can” political slogan, there are thousands of “Just Say No” buttons. I'll Have What She's Having offers a practical map to help us navigate the complex world of social behavior, an essential guide for anyone who wants to understand how people behave and how to begin to change things.

Book excerpt: Some 30 years after Glasgow turned towards regeneration, indicators of its built environment, its health, its economic performance and its quality of life remain below UK averages. This interdisciplinary study examines the ongoing transformation of Glasgow as it transitioned from a de-industrial to a post-industrial city during the 20th and 21st centuries. This book was released on 2007-07-25 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aircraft manufacturer Airbus was established in 1970 by the French, German and UK governments (with the Spanish government joining a year later) in order to develop a coordinated and collaborative European response to the dominance of the global civil aviation market by American companies. Since October 2006, following the decision by BAE Systems to sell its stake in the company, Airbus has been wholly owned by EADS (a joint venture between its French, German and Spanish parent companies).Recent Developments with Airbus (HC 427-I) examines recent challenges faced by Airbus, including reduced competitiveness as a result of the weak US dollar, delays and cost overruns in its flagship A380 aircraft, its restructuring programme, and the financing of the A350 XWB project. It also looks at the future role for the UK Government and the Regional Development Agencies, the implementation of the UK's National Aerospace Technology Strategy, and the impact of the current World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute between the US and the European Union (EU) over government subsidies.Given the fact that the sale of BAE's stake in the company has left the UK without a significant shareholding in

Book Shaping the Industrial Century

Download or read book Shaping the Industrial Century written by Alfred D. Chandler Jr. and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dean of business historians continues his masterful chronicle of the transforming revolutions of the twentieth century begun in Inventing the Electronic Century. Alfred Chandler argues that only with consistent attention to research and development and an emphasis on long-term corporate strategies could firms remain successful over time. He details these processes for nearly every major chemical and pharmaceutical firm, demonstrating why some companies forged ahead while others failed. By the end of World War II, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries were transformed by the commercializing of new learning, the petrochemical and the antibiotic revolutions. But by the 1970s, chemical science was no longer providing the new learning necessary to commercialize more products, although new directions flourished in the pharmaceutical industries. In the 1980s, major drug companies, including Eli Lilly, Merck, and Schering Plough, commercialized the first biotechnology products, and as the twenty-first century began, the infrastructure of this biotechnology revolution was comparable to that of the second industrial revolution just before World War I and the information revolution of the 1960s. Shaping the Industrial Century is a major contribution to our understanding of the most dynamic industries of the modern era.

Book Deciphering Science and Technology

Download or read book Deciphering Science and Technology written by Maureen McNeil and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As science and technology have pervaded modern life to an ever greater degree, social scientists have been led to find questions of the causes and consequences of 'expert' knowledge arising in places that would have been felt unlikely hitherto. Varcoe, McNeil and Yearley's book assembles nine exemplary studies by sociologists, each of which explores an aspect of the current scientific-technological 'revolution'. Some popular ideas are challenged. So, too, implicitly, are certain large-scale social scientific theories claiming to have discerned in science and technology an overall meaning.

Book Intellectual Property Rights and the Life Science Industries

Download or read book Intellectual Property Rights and the Life Science Industries written by Graham Dutfield and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a highly readable and entertaining account of the co-evolution of the patent system and the life science industries since the mid-19th century. The pharmaceutical industries have their origins in advances in synthetic chemistry and in natural products research. Both approaches to drug discovery and business have shaped patent law, as have the lobbying activities of the firms involved and their supporters in the legal profession. In turn, patent law has impacted on the life science industries. Compared to the first edition, which told this story for the first time, the present edition focuses more on specific businesses, products and technologies, including Bayer, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, aspirin, penicillin, monoclonal antibodies and polymerase chain reaction. Another difference is that this second edition also looks into the future, addressing new areas such as systems biology, stem cell research, and synthetic biology, which promises to enable scientists to ?invent? life forms from scratch.Contents: Seven Tales of a Patent; Patents and the Life Science Industries in the Modern Economy; Past: Dyes, Drugs and Domagk; Adrenaline Rushes ? Isolate, Purify ? and Patent; Science and Drug Discovery ? Ignorance, Serendipity and Rational Drug Design; Aspirin; Insulin; Penicillin and the Antibiotics; Cortisone and the Steroids; Polymerase Chain Reaction; The Gene Patent Wars; Innovations without Patents? The Polio Vaccine and Monoclonal Antibodies; Present: Big Pharma, Small Biotech; Crises, Backlashes and Counter-backlashes; Would We Have Got Where We are Today without Patents?; Future: Systems Biology, Stem Cells, ?Synbio? and the Future of Patents.
