Book Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Inriver Test Fishery 2008 2010

Download or read book Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Inriver Test Fishery 2008 2010 written by Frederick W. West and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drift gillnets were fished daily at 2 stations in the Kvichak, Egegik, and Ugashik rivers in Bristol Bay, Alaska, from mid-June to mid-July 2008?2010 to estimate sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka inriver abundance. Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) fishery managers used preliminary test fishery escapement estimates as an inseason management tool to regulate commercial harvests and achieve escapement goals. Daily inriver test fishery index for each river was mean catch per unit effort values obtained from test drifts made in a day. Numbers of sockeye salmon that entered the river were estimated using (1) travel time analysis and (2) the historical mean fish per index point (FPI) value. Travel time estimates could not be made until a meaningful relationship between daily test fishery indices and tower counts developed. Mean fish per index (FPI) estimates were available on the first day of each project. In 2008, the negotiated travel time model, median FPI for the Kvichak River was 51 with median travel time of 2.0 days; Egegik River median FPI was 117 with median travel time of 2.0 days; and Ugashik River median FPI was 58 with median travel time of 3.5 days. In 2009, the negotiated travel time model, median FPI for the Kvichak River was 113 with median travel time of 2.0 days; Egegik River median FPI was 57 with median travel time of 2.0 days; and Ugashik River median FPI was 61 with median travel time of 3.0 days. In 2010, the negotiated travel time model, median FPI for the Kvichak River was 94 with median travel time of 2.0 days; Egegik River median FPI was 72 with median travel time of 2.0 days; and Ugashik River median FPI was 53 with median travel time of 3.0 days.

Book Operational Plan

Download or read book Operational Plan written by Frederick W. West and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, estimates the number of sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka salmon that have passed through the commercial fishery but, have not reached escapement counting tower projects in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Inriver gillnet test fisheries are used to develop indices of relative abundance of sockeye salmon in the Kvichak, Egegik, and Ugashik rivers. These indices in combination with catch and escapement data are used for inseason management of commercial fisheries in the Kvichak/Naknek, Egegik, and Ugashik districts. This report provides operational guidelines for Bristol Bay inriver test fisheries, and general camp policies.

Book Genetics of Subpolar Fish and Invertebrates

Download or read book Genetics of Subpolar Fish and Invertebrates written by Anthony J. Gharrett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries genetics researchers will find invaluable the thirty-eight peer-reviewed contributions in this book, presented at the 20th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium "Genetics of Subpolar Fish and Invertebrates," held in May 2002 in Juneau, Alaska. Looming over concerns of lost fisheries stocks and persistent erosion of genetic variability are predictions of global warming, which may further tax genetic resources. One consequence is an increased reliance on genetic applications to many aspects of fisheries management, aquaculture, and conservation. The contributions in this book are important to modern fisheries science and genetics, and illustrate the evolution of the field over the past decade. The improved technology provides tools to address increasingly complicated problems in traditional applications and ecological and behavioral studies. The union between molecular and quantitative genetics, where many of the major questions about population structure and evolution remain unanswered, will also benefit from the new technologies.
