Book A River with a City Problem

Download or read book A River with a City Problem written by Margaret Cook and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When floods devastated South East Queensland in 2011, who was to blame? Despite the inherent risk of living on a floodplain, most residents had pinned their hopes on Wivenhoe Dam to protect them, and when it failed to do so, dam operators were blamed for the scale of the catastrophic events that followed. A River with a City Problem is a compelling history of floods in the Brisbane River catchment, especially those in 1893, 1974 and 2011. Extensively researched, it highlights the force of nature, the vagaries of politics and the power of community. With many river cities facing urban development challenges, Cook makes a convincing argument for what must change to prevent further tragedy.

Book excerpt: To commemorate the 200 years since the exploring and naming of the Brisbane River by John Oxley in 1823, David Jones has compiled 100 maritime stories of Queensland. The book is in seven sections covering the early days, colonial era, shipwrecks, wartime and others. Australia’s First Nations people lived in and around the Brisbane River for thousands of years. Though they did not have a name for the entire river, sections of the river were called ‘Meanjin’, ‘Maiwar’ and ‘Toowong’. Other names have been lost over time. Similarly, the Brisbane River was broken up into reaches by the new arrivals. They include Hamilton Reach, Bulimba Reach, Humbug Reach, Shafston Reach, Town Reach and others. The first Europeans to discover the Brisbane River was documented by Thomas Welsby in The Discoverers of the Brisbane River, published in 1913. He states that Richard Parsons, Thomas Pamphlet and John Finnegan were the original discoverers though John Oxley gave them no credit for this. In 200 years the river has been the backbone of the city of Brisbane. Today it is used for trade, tourism, transport, pleasure and Brisbane’s water supply.

Book excerpt: Susanna de Vries, award-winning author, and Jake de Vries, former City Architect of Brisbane, have pooled their talents to compile a joint book on the building of Brisbane, which transports us back to the first years of Brisbane’s bleak existence. The book shows the Convict and Officers Barracks and convicts digging roads along what became Queen Street and North Quay. Professional artist Conrad Martens paints the Customs House and Kangaroo Point. The book recounts the effects of Brisbane’s building boom of the 1880s when everyone borrowed money and major buildings like the Mansions, the old Museum, the second wing of the Post Office and the Treasury are completed. In the depression years of the 1890s some Queensland banks and architects go broke. A visiting Canadian artist named Lefèvre Cranstone draws rural Toowong, the Regatt a Hotel and the Toowong Rowing Club. River Road, [later Coronation Drive], once used for droving cattle from Brookfield, becomes a thoroughfare for the carriages of the wealthy from Indooroopilly and Milton.

Book Brisbane Australia s New World City

Download or read book Brisbane Australia s New World City written by Denver Beanland and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the history of the old Town Hall and City Hall, this book provides an analysis of Council’s policies and the delivery of services and infrastructure that shaped Brisbane between 1985 and 2013. It provides a permanent record of Council accomplishments during a period of enormous change. Established three months before Queensland separated from New South Wales in 1859 one of the first issues that faced the new Brisbane Municipal Council was the need for a Town Hall. This publication brings to life the shortcomings of the old Town Hall and the forty-year battle to erect a more suitable facility, which became City Hall. The odyssey continued in the decade long financial struggle to construct Brisbane’s City Hall following the end of World War I. The Council’s aspirational vision for Brisbane, together with strategies and objectives, that make the city a great place to conduct business, work and live are embraced in the concept Brisbane – Australia’s New World City. Today, not only does Council provide the basic services but also must compete against other major cities, both in Australia and internationally, if Brisbane is to progress and not stagnate. With blue skies, a subtropical climate and outdoor lifestyle, Brisbane is positioned on the world stage as vibrant, innovative, clean and green, a great place to live.

Book Meanjin to Brisvegas Snapshots of Brisbane s journey from colonial backwater to new world city

Download or read book Meanjin to Brisvegas Snapshots of Brisbane s journey from colonial backwater to new world city written by John Tilston and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes seminal moments in the history of the capital city of Queensland, which in just one generation has grown from country town to vibrant modern metropolis. It had a tough start. It became a separate state with less financial support from London than any other colony in the mighty British Empire. Almost a century later is was briefly the Allied Forces headquarters for the Pacific War, delighting and depressing its citizens in equal measure. Then it had to shake off corruption in high places before it could realise its great potential. There was some intrigue along the way. Early Brisbane society was enlivened by its own aristocratic Lady Di; a gruesome murder started a dynasty; the Battle of Brisbane was hushed-up to maintain morale; and the local 'Rat Pack' played a rather different Joke. Prior to European settlement - as Meanjin - it was a busy meeting place for the many indigenous clans in the Moreton Bay region.
