But what does it look like for Christians to bear this “family likeness”? In Bringing Sons unto Glory, Chambers examines the four Gospel accounts to draw a portrait of Jesus Christ, asking what exactly His bodily incarnation means for us today. When we gaze on His sacred personality, we can, as the apostle Peter writes, participate in his divine nature—and understand more clearly the life of discipleship.

Book Bringing Many Sons to Glory

This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book, "Bringing Many Sons to Glory," is a direct quote from the Bible (Hebrews 2:10). The quote sums up what Jesus is all about-why he came, what he preached, why he died, and what he is up to now. Yet, churches and individual believers often hold tenaciously to two views at odds with that quote. First, they think God will bring few rather than many sons to glory. Second, they think most humans will end up in hell, a place of eternal shame and pain, not glory. What are we to do with these conflicting views? The gospel, which means "good news," fits with bringing many sons to glory, but the shame and pain message is an asterisk gospel: "Jesus saves . . . *but most people will still be lost." That is devastatingly bad news since it damns so many and damns them so horribly. It also makes God look mean rather than loving. Why do people cling to such bad news? One reason is that they think the Bible teaches it and therefore they must accept it by faith. "Bringing Many Sons to Glory" looks at Bible passages relevant to both sides of the question. Sometimes this involves observing a distinction between related but different words in Bible text, such as the Greek krisis, krima, and krino, all of which are translated judgment but usually relate respectively to a trial, a verdict, and a sentence. There is a great difference between being on trial, being convicted, and being sentenced for a crime, but in English each one may be called a judgment. "Bringing Many Sons to Glory" shows how this one biblical teaching (about judgment), resolves much of the conflict over man's final destiny. Other passages and teachings also shed light without turning the book into a difficult theological treatise or an intricate word study of the type produced by and intended for professionals. In just under 200 easy-to-read pages, the author brings the Bible and common sense together to defend God's goodness and offer realistic hope to all who seek it. An alphabetical index enables the reader to quickly access 136 related topics, from "age of accountability" and "annihilation" to "reconciliation" and "wrath of God." A second index lists 210 Bible references and indicates the page numbers where they are applied to the "many-sons-to-glory" concept. A unique feature of this book is its "Prospectus." On the page facing the Table of Contents, the prospectus lists eight questions related to human destiny and indicates pages where each is discussed. For example, Question 1 is "Will evil exist in some form eternally or will it disappear from the universe completely?" (See pages 44, 100-102, 106, 169-170, 174-176.) Baldwin, 20 years a pastor of evangelical churches and a prolific author, traces his own journey from a troubling asterisk gospel to what the Christmas angel called "good news of great joy that will be for all the people." In "Bringing Many Sons to Glory," Baldwin says that God, who is love, is also wise enough and powerful enough and good enough and big enough to ensure that glory becomes the final destination of many sons and daughters, including some we think least likely to be there.

Book Seeing and savouring Jesus Christ

Download or read book Seeing and savouring Jesus Christ written by JOHN PIPER and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Jesus Christ? You've never met Him in person, and you don't know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ - the divine Person revealed in the Bible - has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, "Yes, this is truth." It's like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet. The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross. Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God's Word. Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, He will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Ask God for the grace to do His will, and you will see the truth of His Son. John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book All Things New written by Peter Hiett and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In several places, Scripture testifies to the idea that there is a reality in which everything is very good (Gen. 1:31); a reality in which all things are made new (Rev. 21:5); where "every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them," praises God and the Lamb that was slain (Rev. 5:13); a place where Jesus, the Light, fills all things (Eph. 4:10 ) and every knee bows and every tongue gives praise (Rom.14:11, Phil. 2:10-11, Isa. 45:23). Well, if that's the case-and Jesus said, "Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35)-then where the hell is Hell? I mean, how do we reconcile Scripture with "popular" notions of "Hell" ...an endless Hell? That question comes as a surprise for many; for we've been told that the popular view of Hell-a place where God tortures people or allows people to be tortured forever without end-is a biblical idea. The more I've studied it, the more I've become convinced that this "doctrine" is a very unbiblical idea... perhaps it's even a satanic idea.In the following pages, I'd like to just offer some assistance in constructing this new mental paradigm-a biblical paradigm that allows for an eternal day in which everything is good. In the first section, "Exegetical Paradigms," I'll examine the three leading views of Hell in light of Scripture and offer a set of ideas that has led me to embrace the idea of redemption for all. In the next section, "Theology," I'll suggest a few ways in which the idea of redemption for all may relate to one's current theological system. In the last section, "Pastoral Care," I'll suggest some reasons as to why I think all of this matters.-Peter Hiett

Book excerpt: For many people, remaining optimistic and feeling positive about themselves and their lives is a constant battle—especially when circumstances are difficult and life is hard. For others, negativity is something that only sneaks up from time to time, yet still wreaks havoc in their hearts. Regardless of the root causes, once pessimistic thoughts permeate our minds, our feelings and emotions begin to control us instead of us controlling them. Eventually it doesn’t seem possible to stay positive, happy, and full of joy, and negative thought patterns shake our faith, causing us to sink emotionally, mentally, and spiritually over time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Despite what storms roll in, hearts anchored in God don’t sink. When we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel and live, even if our circumstances remain the same. Intentionally embracing the opportunity to experience a transformed heart and a renewed mind opens the door for a changed life, because a positive mind will always lead to a more positive life. In Unsinkable Faith, author and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Tracie Miles offers hope for women who struggle with negativity. Each chapter explores Tracie’s and other women’s personal stories, showing how they rose above their circumstances by transforming and renewing their minds. Unsinkable Faith is a breath of fresh air for anyone longing for a heart full of joy, an unbreakable smile, and a new, more optimistic perspective on life. This book will equip you to: Replace pessimism with positive thinking by becoming the captain of your thoughts; Learn how true joy and happiness are based on choice, not circumstances; Overcome unhealthy habits of negative thinking by intentionally implementing three easy mind-renewing steps; Stop feeling hopeless and pitiful, and start feeling hope-filled and powerful instead; and Discover that when you change the way you think, you change the way feel, and in turn you can change your life completely.

Book Suffering and the Sovereignty of God

Download or read book Suffering and the Sovereignty of God written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2006-09-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, 9/11, a tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and many other tragedies have shown us that the vision of God in today's churches in relation to evil and suffering is often frivolous. Against the overwhelming weight and seriousness of the Bible, many Christians are choosing to become more shallow, more entertainment-oriented, and therefore irrelevant in the face of massive suffering. In Suffering and the Sovereignty of God, contributors John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot explore the many categories of God's sovereignty as evidenced in his Word. They urge readers to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.
