This report examines the scale of the illegal timber trade in the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing the processes and current trends in logging, sourcing, trafficking, manufacturing, importing and consumption of illegal timber and timber products. Assessments of countries' timber resources, extent of illegal logging, policies and legislation, and enforcement initiatives show the efficacy of local, regional, national and international legislative frameworks and actions to suppress illegal trade. The report highlights the need for cooperative policies and regulations between countries to resolve sovereignty issues, share information and develop standards. Issues addressing monitoring the transit of timber and timber products would identify weaknesses in governance, laws, policies and enforcement. Potential research that identifies the causes of the trade, economic dimensions and legal frameworks combined with government intelligence would inform policymaking.

While you are on driving, one traffic sepoy waved you to stop for checking. Despite all completed papers, he demanded money in the name of slightly narrow number plate on your vehicle. The footpath, which was constructed hardly six months ago, dug out by labourers and new tiles are being fixed in place of it. Whereas in your colony service-road, streets are uneven, damaged badly and developed path-holes for the last five years, drains are blocked, sewer is stenching. Despite complaints, no one is hearing and repairing. These incidents make you fret, frustrate and restless, and you discuss others to vent your spleen out. There are scores of muggers in society whom you come across daily in your day-to-day life, challenging you and your democracy as well.

The book first reveals a multifaceted pattern of timber trafficking in Vietnam, comprising five different components: harvesting, transporting, trading, supporting, and processing. It then assesses the crime’s victimization from timber trafficking. Thanks to the employment of a broad conceptual framework of human security, Cao reveals that timber trafficking has substantial harmful impacts on all seven elements of human security: economic, food, health, environmental, personal, community, and political; whilst being closely interconnected, they vary between different groups of victims. Cao concludes by offering five solutions to better control of timber trafficking in the context of Vietnam, which crucially involve refining the current policy framework of forest governance and improving the efficiency of law enforcement. A wide-ranging and timely study, this book will hold particular appeal for scholars of green criminology and environmental harm.
