Book The Second Battle of Cabin Creek Brilliant Victory

Download or read book The Second Battle of Cabin Creek Brilliant Victory written by Steven L. Warren and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commander of the three-hundred-wagon Union supply train never expected a large ragtag group of Texans and Native Americans to attack during the dark of night in Union-held territory. But Brigadier Generals Richard Gano and Stand Watie defeated the unsuspecting Federals in the early morning hours of September 19, 1864, at Cabin Creek in the Cherokee nation. The legendary Watie, the only Native American general on either side, planned details of the raid for months. His preparation paid off--the Confederate troops captured wagons with supplies that would be worth more than $75 million today. Writer, producer and historian Steve Warren uncovers the untold story of the last raid at Cabin Creek in this Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal-winning history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the major post-9/11 US military interventions turned into quagmires? Despite huge power imbalances in the United States' favor, significant capacity-building efforts, and repeated tactical victories by what many observers call the world's best military, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq turned intractable. The US government's fixation on zero-sum, decisive victory in these conflicts is a key reason why military operations to overthrow two developing-world regimes failed to successfully achieve favorable and durable outcomes. In Zero-Sum Victory, retired US Army colonel Christopher D. Kolenda identifies three interrelated problems that have emerged from the government's insistence on zero-sum victory. First, the US government has no organized way to measure successful outcomes other than a decisive military victory, and thus, selects strategies that overestimate the possibility of such an outcome. Second, the United States is slow to recognize and modify or abandon losing strategies; in both cases, US officials believe their strategies are working, even as the situation deteriorates. Third, once the United States decides to withdraw, bargaining asymmetries and disconnects in strategy undermine the prospects for a successful transition or negotiated outcome. Relying on historic examples and personal experience, Kolenda draws thought-provoking and actionable conclusions about the utility of American military power in the contemporary world—insights that serve as a starting point for future scholarship as well as for important national security reforms.

Download or read book Victory Over Japan written by Ellen Gilchrist and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this collection of 14 short stories set in Arkansas and Mississippi went on to win that year’s National Book Award for fiction, confirming Ellen Gilchrist’s place as one of the preeminent literary talents of her generation. Victory Over Japan takes us into the lives of an unforgettable group of Southern women — beautiful, complicated, enchanting, and sometimes dangerous — in and out of bars, marriages, divorces, lovers' arms, and even earthquakes, in an attempt to find happiness, or at least some satisfaction. Throughout these stories, one hears echoes of Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty, but Ms. Gilchrist has her own unique literary voice, and it is outrageously funny, moving, tragic, and always appealing. PRAISE: “To say that Ellen Gilchrist can write is to say that Placido Domingo can sing. All you need to do is listen.” —Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post “She is what they call a natural, writing with passion, authority and a noticeable lack of the self-consciousness that weighs down much of contemporary fiction.” —San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle “Ellen Gilchrist’s achievement is to create lives which refuse to be bound on the page by words and sentences . . . the writing is full of understanding that doesn’t advertise itself as perception or insight.” —London Daily Telegraph

Book Brilliant Manoeuvres

Download or read book Brilliant Manoeuvres written by Richard Martin and published by Global Professional Pub. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Essential reading for those in senior positions in business * All military concepts are fully explained with diagrams, historical examples, or personal anecdotes, and then translated into terms and tools that can be used in business * Includes business and military examples, personal anecdotes, and real-life experiences of the author, in both business and military settings Brilliant Manoeuvres - How to Use Military Wisdom to Win Business Battles is for executives and entrepreneurs who are looking to create and sustain competitive advantage and to lead their teams in the face of determined competition and rivalry. Based on the author's experience as a business consultant and entrepreneur, business executives and entrepreneurs like to see themselves as modern day warriors and generals, fighting off competitors and conquering new markets. They talk about attacking competitors, defending turf, firing warning shots, establishing beachheads, bypassing the competition, digging a protective moat, and so on. Martin starts by explaining how and why military leaders and planners actually think and operate the way they do. He translates this into terms that business people can readily apply to their own reality so they can survive and thrive. In other words, this book is a practical guidebook, and not just another set of exhortations to "lead from the front" or to "win without fighting." The book includes ten chapters, and each will incorporate historical examples and personal experiences from the author's military and consulting careers, as well as historical and contemporary business illustrations to show how these concepts apply to business. It will also include practical exercises and tools that the business leader and entrepreneur can use to seize and maintain the initiative against competitors, avoid obstacles and entrenched opposition, and defend competitive advantages against attacks and incursions. Other concepts to be covered include mass and economy of effort, intelligence, cohesion and morale, friction and uncertainty, and of course, leadership and inspiration.
