Book The History of the Origins of Christianity Volume 5

Download or read book The History of the Origins of Christianity Volume 5 written by Joseph-Ernest Renan and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Ernest Renan (1823 -1892) was a French expert of Middle East ancient languages and civilizations (philology), philosopher, historian, and writer, devoted to his native province of Brittany. He is best known for his influential historical works on early Christianity, and his political theories, especially concerning nationalism and national identity. Within his lifetime, Renan was best known as the author of the enormously popular Life of Jesus (The History of the Origins of Christianity, Volume 1, 1863). Renan attributed the idea of the book to his sister, Henriette, with whom he was traveling in Ottoman Syria and Palestine when, struck with a fever, she died suddenly. With only a New Testament and copy of Josephus as references, he began writing. The book was first translated into English in the year of its publication by Charles E. Wilbour and has remained in print for the past 145 years. Renan's Life of Jesus was lavished with ironic praise and criticism by Albert Schweitzer in his book The Quest of the Historical Jesus. Renan claimed Jesus was able to purify himself of Jewish traits and that Jesus became an Aryan, his Life of Jesus promoted racial ideas and infused race into theology and the person of Jesus, he depicted Jesus as a Galilean who was transformed from a Jew into a Christian, and that Christianity emerged purified of any Jewish influences. The book was based largely on the Gospel of John, and was a scholarly work. It depicted Jesus as a man but not God, and rejected the miracles of the Gospel. Renan believed by humanizing Jesus he was restoring to him a greater dignity. The book's controversial assertions that the life of Jesus should be written like the life of any historic person, and that the Bible could and should be subject to the same critical scrutiny as other historical documents caused some controversy and enraged many Christians, and many Jews were enraged because of its depiction of Judaism as foolish and absurdly illogical and for insisting that Jesus and Christianity was superior.

Book THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT

Download or read book THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT written by Edward D. Andrews and published by Christian Publishing House. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT was copied and recopied by hand for 1,500 years. Regardless of those scribes who had worked very hard to be faithful in their copying, errors crept into the text. How can we be confident that what we have today is the Word of God? Wilkins and Andrews offer the reader an account of the copying by hand and transmission of the Greek New Testament. They present a comprehensive survey of the manuscript history from the penning of the 27 New Testament books to the current critical texts. What did the ancient books look like and how were documents written? How were the New Testament books published? Who would use secretaries? Why was it so hard to be a secretary in the first century? How was such work done? What do we know about the early Christian copyists? What were the scribal habits and tendencies? Is it possible to establish the original text of the New Testament? How do paleographers date the ancient manuscripts? How has the Greek New Testament text come down to us? How did textual variations and manuscript families arise? Just how many textual variants are there and how are they to be counted? What guarantee do we have as to the reliability of the Greek text? What are the principles and rules of textual criticism and how are they to be applied, so that we can get back the original reading? What are the collation and classification of manuscripts? What is the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method (CBGM) and can it be trusted? How reliable are our master (critical) Greek texts of the New Testament (WH/NA28/UBS5)? Why can we be confident that the literal translations (ASV / RSV / NASB / UASV) are providing for its readers the faithful Word of God? Their work on THE TEXT OF THE NEW TESTAMENT is carried out with an apologetical mindset, to assist Christians in their defense of God's Word.
