Book excerpt: Examines the historical, cultural, and social history of the Canadian portion of the Detroit River community in the first half of the nineteenth century. Uppermost Canada examines the historical, cultural, and social history of the Canadian portion of the Detroit River community in the first half of the nineteenth century. The phrase "Uppermost Canada," denoting the western frontier of Upper Canada (modern Ontario), was applied to the Canadian shore of the Detroit River during the War of 1812 by a British officer, who attributed it to President James Madison. The Western District was one of the partly-judicial, partly-governmental municipal units combining contradictory arisocratic and democratic traditions into which the province was divided until 1850. With its substantial French-Canadian population and its veneer of British officialdom, in close proximity to a newly American outpost, the Western District was potentially the most unstable. Despite all however, Alan Douglas demonstrates that the Western District endured without apparent change longer than any of the others.

Meet Dallas Stars’ winger Andrew Cogliano, who captivated the hockey world by playing 830 consecutive games, despite various injuries, and hear how hockey and his parents instilled in him the strong work ethic that made his streak possible. Learn about how Jeremy Rupke found his passion and created the popular website, How To Hockey, to help young hockey hopefuls who might not have money for professional lessons develop their on-ice skills and give them the confidence to achieve their dreams off the ice. Read about players like Jack Jablonski, who didn’t let a life-changing spinal cord injury at age sixteen stop him from being a part of the game, and is now using his experience to raise awareness and funds for spinal cord injury research. From LGBTQ players like Jessica Platt who are breaking down barriers to the women such as Danièle Sauvageau who are breaking glass ceilings as coaches, refs, agents, and analysts, these are the everyday heroes who are using hockey to inspire change. Featuring incredible stories of comebacks, milestones, and friendship, Everyday Hockey Heroes, Volume II highlights the very best of hockey: the power it has to unite us to be the best we can be—for ourselves and for others.

Book A Good Pair of Boots and A Road to Walk On

Download or read book A Good Pair of Boots and A Road to Walk On written by C. H. Evers and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the foot travels of a young impressionable boy in the middle of the last century. Being enticed by the call of the long winding road, he foot travel's Canada's landscapes in all provinces coast to coast. With this desire to explore his homeland, the boy seeks to experience the unique smells, tastes, and textures of every terrain, of every geographic location, needing to feel a belonging and welcome. This book will track his journey as he moves into adulthood, into the domesticity of a typical Canadian community, and into retirement. Initially innocent and trusting, he is confronted by a society that he sees as hypocritical and criminal and without a moral or social compass. Now as a young man raising a family he sets out to question the social re-engineering of the Canadian establishment and the apathy of his fellow countrymen bothers him deeply. Curious now, he sets out to investigate this troubling situation. Inquisitive and concerned, he approaches this task with the same vigour, determination, and sensitivity that he sustained through his teen years exploring his Canadian homeland. Now he finds that the re-engineering of his society does not allow for queries or legal protest. Wishing to understand and having an inquisitive nature, he sets out with intent and allows himself to be incarcerated, where he is introduced to Canada's criminal courts and justice system. His suspicions of corruption are confirmed. "However, his findings of this criminal activity are distorted by the compliant criminal media using fabrication and lies." The socially re-engineered community where the older man now lives accepts the media's distortions and inventions as truths and therefore self-evident. The reader of this book will be taken into a neighbourhood unremarkable on the face of it, but a community that sustains a situation that is toxic and unliveable for a man who only sought to feel at home and belong to what he feels could have been a greater country. It is at this point that the reader will come to the realization that they are complicit in this collective malaise, and that they are this man's community and neighbour. They will have seen the enemy and it is they, themselves.

Book Northern Links

Download or read book Northern Links written by Brian Kendall and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’m still not certain why I stayed away almost 30 years from a game I had loved passionately as a kid. I know I never stopped believing that in so any ways golf is the most rewarding of sports, and I fully intended to one day make my way back. It just took me a little longer than I expected.” Thus Brian Kendall begins his unforgettable journey through the world of Canadian golf, a mid-life voyage of discovery that any golfer might envy. At the Banff Springs Golf Course and other world-famous courses, readers walk in the footsteps of Stanley Thompson, Canada’s most celebrated golf course architect. By tracing his own personal history with the game, Kendall introduces us to the legends such as Marlene Stewart Streit, who relives her meteoric rise five decades earlier, and his boyhood hero, the great George Knudson. Here, too, are the stories of Ben Kern, Canada’s top instructor; senior golfers Bill Hardwick and Doug Robb, who made their own mid-life dreams come true on the European Senior Tour; and King of Aces Steve Johnston, who has scored an astonishing 47 holes-in-one. Not forgotten are the unsung heroes of Canadian golf: the kids who caddy at the historic Hamilton Golf and Country Club; a colourful gang of fanatics who get their wintertime fix in a covered dome; and two young professionals desperate to make their mark on the Canadian Tour. From the oceanside fairways of Cape Breton’s Highlands Links to a midnight tee-off at Yellowknife’s famous Midnight Classic, Northern Links tells the story of golfers whose passion for the game fuels a nation’s obsession.
