Book Brightness Distribution in Discrete Radio Sources Iii the Structure of the Sources

Download or read book Brightness Distribution in Discrete Radio Sources Iii the Structure of the Sources written by P. MALTBY and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visibility functions of 195 radio sources are interpreted in terms of the structure of these sources. Of the sources, 174 are known or presumed to be extragalactic. Seventy-five of these extragalactic sources are resolved with the interferometer spacings used, and complex structure is found in all but 13. In the sources showing complex structure, two similar components with nearly equal intensities are found in 15, 40 show two or more components of unequal intensities, while 7 appear to be a bright core surrounded by a halo. It is suggested that the majority of all extragalactic sources have complex structure. Data are also given on the brightness distributions in the 21 galactic sources observed. In contrast to the extragalactic sources, emission from the galactic sources is typically confined to a single region. (Author).

Download or read book Observations of the California Institute of Technology Radio Observatory Owens Valley California 1961 4 Brightness Distribution in Discrete Radio Sources I Observations with an East west Interferometer written by ALAN T. MOFFET and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caltech variable baseline interferometer was used in a program of brightness distribution measurements on 195 discrete radio sources at a wavelength of 31.3 cm. This paper reports measurements, made with an east-west interferometer baseline, of the complex visibility functions of 127 sources. The amplitude and phase of the visibility functions were measured at transit with antenna spacings of 195, 389, 779, and 1557 lambda. Using these same basic spacings, and by observing at large hour angles, the visibility amplitude was measured at ten other effective spacings between 126 lambda and 1363 lambda. Not all sources were observed at all spacings. The data are presented in tabular form, and graphs of the visibility amplitude as a function of antenna spacing are given for 51 of the more interesting sources. Download or read book Observations of the California Institute of Technology Radio Observatory Owens Valley California 1961 5 Brightness Distribution in Discrete Radio Sources Ii Observations with a North south Interferometer written by P. MALTBY and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brightness distribution in 165 radio sources was obtained at a wavelength of 31.3 cm. The measurements were made with the variable spacing interferometer at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory using a north-south baseline. Primary sets of observations, giving the visibility amplitude and the phase, were taken at transit at four different antenna spacings. Additional information about the brightness distribution was obtained from observations at large hour angles, using the same physical antenna separations. The results of the observations are given in tabular form and several visibility curves are shown. (Author).

Book A General Discussion of the Brightness Distribution of Extra galactic Radio Sources 3

Download or read book A General Discussion of the Brightness Distribution of Extra galactic Radio Sources 3 written by Edward B. Fomalont and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper contains a description and discussion of the brightness distribution of extra-galactic radio sources based mainly on recent observations at the California Institute of Technology. The paper concentrates on displaying general properties of radio sources rather than a discussion of individual sources. The angular scale and the morphological types of radio structures are discussed, a method for analyzing the structure of a large sample of sources using the visibility function is outlined, and the spatial properties of the radio structure and galaxy are discussed. Book The Brightness Distribution in Extragalactic Radio Sources

Download or read book The Brightness Distribution in Extragalactic Radio Sources written by A. T. MOFFET and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts are presented on a continuing program of angular size and brightness distribution measurements. One hundred eighty radio sources were observed with the variable spacing interferometer at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Results are presented for a group of 88 sources which were observed with both an east-west and a north-south baseline. All observations were made at a wavelength of 31.3 cm. (Author).

Book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy

Download or read book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy written by A. Richard Thompson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive, authoritative coverage of interferometric techniques for radio astronomy In this Second Edition of Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy, three leading figures in the development of large imaging arrays, including very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), describe and explain the technology that provides images of the universe with an angular resolution as fine as 1/20,000 of an arcsecond. This comprehensive volume begins with a historical review followed by detailed coverage of the theory of interferometry and synthesis imaging, analysis of interferometer response, geometrical relationships, polarimetry, antennas, and arrays. Discussion of the receiving system continues with analysis of the response to signals and noise, analog design requirements, and digital signal processing. The authors detail special requirements of VLBI including atomic frequency standards, broadband recording systems, and antennas in orbit. Further major topics include: * Calibration of data and synthesis of images * Image enhancement using nonlinear algorithms * Techniques for astrometry and geodesy * Propagation in the neutral atmosphere and ionized media * Radio interference * Related techniques: intensity interferometry, moon occultations, antenna holography, and optical interferometry Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy, Second Edition is comprehensive in that it provides an excellent overview of most radio astronomical instrumentation and techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 13 contains literature published in 1975 and received before August 15, 1975; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy. We want to acknowledge valuable contributions to this vol ume by Zentralstelle ftir Atomkemenergie-Dokumentation, Leopoldshafen, which supported our ab stracting service by sending us retrospective literature searches.
