Book Brighter H Source for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System

Download or read book Brighter H Source for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Further increases in the beam intensity of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne National Laboratory required the replacement of the H− source with a higher current source. A magnetron ion source of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) design was adapted with a grooved cathode to provide a stable 40 to 50 mA of beam operating at 30 Hz for up to a 90 .mu.s pulse duration. Problems of space charge blowup due to the lack of neutralization of the H− beam were solved by injecting additional gs into the 20 keV transport system. The source has recently been installed in the machine and the available input to the accelerator has more than doubled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) Accelerator System is reported, including an increase in average beam current to 13.4 microamperes and increased reliability to 93.2%. Brief discussions are given for the performance of the major accelerator subsystems, including the H− ion source and preaccelerator, the 50 MeV linac, and the synchrotron and its subsystems. (LEW).

Book Intensity Stability Improvements for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System

Download or read book Intensity Stability Improvements for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) accelerator system consists of a 750 keV Cockcroft-Walton preaccelerator, 50 MeV linear accelerator and a 500 MeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS). The accelerator system accelerates over 2.5 x 1012 protons per pulse at a 30 Hz rate to strike a depleted uranium target for producing neutrons (which are used for neutron scattering research.) Since beginning operation in 1977, the beam intensity has been steadily increasing with improvements in various systems, such as a new H− source, improved correction magnet systems, etc. Instabilities created by the higher intensities have also been under control.

Book Recent Performance of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System

Download or read book Recent Performance of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator System written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) accelerator system has now been in operation as part of a national user program for over five years. During that period steady progress has been made in both beam intensity and reliability. Almost 1.8 billion pulses totaling 4 x 1021 protons have now been delivered to the spallation neutron target. Recent weekly average currents have reached 15 .mu. A (3.2 x 1012 protons per pulse, 30 pulses per second) and short-term peaks of almost 17 .mu. A have been reached. In fact, the average current for the last two years is up 31% over the average for the first three years of operation.

Book Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator Status

Download or read book Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Accelerator Status written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) facility has been in operation since November 1, 1981. From that date through August 1, 1983, the accelerator system was scheduled for 7191 hours of operation. During this period, 627 million pulses totaling about 1.1 x 1021 protons were delivered to the spallation target. The accelerator has exceeded goals set in 1981 by averaging 8.65 .mu. A over this two year period. This average beam current, while modest by the standards of proposed machines, makes the IPNS synchrotron (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS)) the highest intensity proton synchrotron in the world today. Detailed data on accelerator operation are presented. Weekly average currents of 12 .mu. A have been achieved along with peaks of 13.9 .mu. A.A great deal has been learned about the required operating constraints during high beam current operation. It should be possible to increase the average beam current during this next year to 12 .mu. A while observing these restraints. Improvement plans have been formulated to increase the beam current to 16 .mu. A over the next three years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

Book Performance of the H Ion Source for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source

Download or read book Performance of the H Ion Source for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January of 1983, a magnetron type H− ion source was installed in the Intense Pulse Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne National Laboratory. The higher available H− current has helped enable the weekly average intensity of the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) to be increased from 8 .mu. A to over 12 .mu. A. After two years of operation, the reliability of the source producing 40 mA of H− ions at a 30 Hz repetition rate continues to be excellent.
