Download or read book Effects of Surround Illumination on Visual Performance written by Fred H. Ireland and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common human factors recommendation states that, for good target visibility, the area surrounding a display should not be brighter than the background area within the display. However, this recommendation must often be violated in applications where the surround brightness cannot be adequately controlled (e.g. in an airplane cockpit) and/or display technique limitations prevent use of high brightness backgrounds (e.g. with cathode ray tubes). This literature review was undertaken to see what has been discovered thus far concerning the effects on target visibility of specific parameters of a surround-to-background. Well over 100 documents were reviewed. Seventy-five annotated references to the more pertinent documents are contained in this report. Quantitative effects of pertinent parameters have been studied by numerous investigators. Results of studies using extended surrounds, rather than point sources, have not been sufficiently comprehensive or consistent to support quantitative generalizations in this area. Attempts have been made by Holladay and by Moon and Spencer to make quantitative predictions for the extended surround case on the basis of the more extensive body of data dealing with point source effects. However, several of the findings upon which their formulas are based have been contradicted by other findings cited in this report. (Author).
Download or read book Road Lighting written by Wout van Bommel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the underlying principles on which modern road lighting is based, and provides the reader with knowledge of how these principles should be applied in practice. This book offers a completely fresh approach to the subject, reflecting how the technology of road lighting has progressed to keep up with the changes in lamp technology, especially in solid state light sources, and the increasing awareness of energy use and environmental issues. The book is divided into three parts. Part One describes lighting of open roads, with chapters discussing visual performance and comfort (including the effects of mesopic vision and age), and international standards and recommendations for road lighting. Lighting equipment is introduced; specifically lamps and luminaires in terms of their practical properties and features, but also the road surface and its characteristics. A chapter on Lighting Design makes the link between theory and practice, providing the reader with the knowledge needed for effective lighting design, including aspects relating to sustainability. The final chapter of Part One deals with lighting calculation conventions and measurements. Part Two is devoted to light pollution. The negative consequences of light pollution are described and tactics to restrict light pollution explained. Lighting criteria are defined that can be used by the lighting designer to guarantee installations stay within acceptable limits. International standards and recommendations on the restriction of light pollution are discussed. Part Three is devoted to tunnel lighting, with chapters discussing visual performance in tunnel environments, lighting criteria, standards and recommendations, and concluding with a chapter on tunnel lighting equipment and design. This book is a valuable resource for road lighting designers and engineers, students of lighting design and engineering, town planners, traffic engineers, environmental specialists, and lamp and luminaire developers and manufacturers.

Download or read book Experiments with Drugs written by H. J. Eysenck and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments With Drugs: Studies in the Relation between Personality, Learning Theory and Drug Action provides a report of a series of experiments, conducted to test the effects of certain groups of drugs, depressants and stimulants, on human behavior. The book presents a number of experiments, together with the theoretical rationale underlying their development. The text begins with a chapter that sets the stage for the exposition of the various concepts and findings on drug effects on behavior. Subsequent chapters deal with particular subjects such as personality and drug effects; the effects of stimulant and depressant drugs on visual and auditory masking; excitation-inhibition and the theory of neurosis; interaction effects of drugs; and the influence of stimulant and depressant drugs on the central nervous system. Psychologists, biochemists, and researchers in the field of psychopharmacology will find the book useful and incisive.

This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to p- vide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and ind- try to share ideas, problems and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2008, held in Shanghai, China, September 15–18, 2008, constituted the 4th International Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006 and ICIC 2005 held in Qingdao, Kunming and Hefei, China, 2007, 2006 and 2005, respectively. This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing. Its aim was to unify the picture of contemporary intelligent computing techniques as an integral concept that highlights the trends in advanced computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications. Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications”. Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Effects of Surround Brightness and Size on Visual Performance written by Fred H. Ireland and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visual display must often be used in a setting where the surrounding visual field is brighter than the background area within the display. Such use violates a common human factors recommendation that the brightness of the display surround should be equal to, or slightly less than, that of the background in the display itself. The purpose of this experiment was to determine, quantitatively, the degradation in visibility due to high surround brightness and thus to provide useful data for the display system designer. Measurements were made of the target-to-background contrast required for each of 5 Ss to determine, with 50% accuracy, the orientation of a light Landolt ring target centered on a darker circular background. The target gap subtended 1.93 minutes of arc. Background angular subtense was varied from 5° to 45°, background brightness from 0.17 to 18.43 millilamberts and surround-to-background brightness ratio from 0:1 to 100:1. A uniform surround, independently variable in brightness with respect to the background, filled the rest of the visual field. The scene was viewed monocularly with natural pupil. The contrast limen was found to vary directly with surround-to-background brightness ratio for ratios greater than one. The variation with background size was smaller than predicted by an equation for integrating the effects of point sources of glare. An apparent tendency for a slight increase in limen as the surround-to-background ratio decreased from 1:1 to 0:1 was not statistically significant. Results are described by equations, and a procedure for their practical application is illustrated.
