There needs to be a pretty girl with sex appeal, a lot of money, and, of course, someone else to blame. There are a lot of reasons to kill someone. Some people do it out of hatred. Some people do it for personal advancement. Some people do it simply because they are evil people. No one will ever be certain if or why this particular murder occurred, but the speculation around it would affect the family and friends of the victim for years after the event. This is a case out of Phoenix, Arizona about a man who fell in love with a Vegas Showgirl.

Book excerpt: Timing is everything, says St. Paul Daily Dispatch photographer Alan Jeffrey when he's asked why somebody always gets killed when he and Daily Dispatch reporter Warren "Mitch" Mitchell are visiting Martha's Vineyard. Mitch and Al and their cartoonist companion, Dave Jerome, are on the celebrated vacation isle to testify for the prosecution in the trial of identical twins Ima and Ura Jewell, who are accused of murdering Dave's uncle, Walter Jerome. The twins, who were Walter's financial advisers, had also tried to murder this answer-hungry trio after confessing that they'd killed Walter because he'd caught them stealing $500,000 from his account. As the trial of the glamorous twins begins, a new mystery arises when two visitors from St. Paul are shot to death by a professional killer on Grand Illumination Night on the grounds of the historic Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. While Mitch, Al and Dave puzzle over who hired the killer and why, another shooting takes place in the same Campgrounds cottage. The search to identify the person who paid the killer leads the three friends, who fashion themselves as The Three Musketeers, into a fast and furious deep water boat chase and a too-close encounter with a fast-moving airplane. Meanwhile, the murder trial moves on toward an uncertain verdict as the defense goes on offense against Mitch, Al and Dave.

Book excerpt: A Malone Novel. In this latest thriller featuring the intrepid Los Angeles PI, Malone gets reacquainted with some old friends and meets new enemies in a troubling case that threatens to shake the City of Angels to its core. An aspiring investigative reporter, Piper Lang has her cornflower blue eyes set on becoming more than just another pretty face in the newsroom of a major L.A. newspaper. She also has somebody sending her death threats and threatening to rearrange her lovely face if she keeps snooping into the goings on at a secretive Los Angeles-based female empowerment and entrepreneurial training group. It seems the shadowy company is operating with impunity like a multi-level marketing scheme that one of Lang’s sources claims is only a front for a dangerous sex cult. Malone’s job is to keep the attractive and vivacious Piper healthy until she breaks the biggest story of her career. But after her primary source is almost murdered by two tough guys, Malone’s professional skills are put to the test in a deadly game–a game that may cost Malone and Piper Lang their lives. When it seems clear Malone may be outgunned this time, series favorite L.A.P.D. detective Jaime Reyes comes to the rescue to provide backup. From the mansions of Bel Air to the film studios of Tinseltown, Malone will need to watch his step as he and Piper unravel a exploitative sex-cult. In L.A., all that glitters isn’t always gold.

Book Nineteenth Century Anti Catholic Discourses

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the nineteenth century much clearly gendered, anti-Catholic literature was produced for the Protestant middle classes. Nineteenth Century Anti-Catholic Discourses explores how this writing generated a series of popular Catholic images and looks towards the cultural, social and historical foundation of these representations. Diana Peschier places the novels of Charlotte Brontë within the framework of Victorian social ideologies, in particular the climate created by rise of anti-Catholicism and thus provides an alternative reading of her work.

Book excerpt: "Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk." (Henry David Thoreau) There are two great branches of evidence in a Criminal Case. They are direct evidence and circumstantial evidence. The meaning of direct evidence is as plain as the nose on your face. A first grader can easily grasp the concept. Whatever a person perceives with any of his physical senses is direct evidence. If you see a crime happen that is direct evidence. And if you smell it or touch it or taste it or hear it as it happens -- that is also direct evidence. Everything else is circumstantial. Therefore, the meaning of circumstantial evidence is easily comprehended and just as easily categorized. If it isn't direct evidence it's circumstantial evidence. And if there's a trout in a can of milk, we know the farmer has dipped his can into a stream of water. We didn't see him do it, but we know the squiggly rainbow didn't come from a cow's udder. The finned scrapper getting his first taste of milk is irrefutable circumstantial evidence of dairy farmer duplicity!
