Book Sky Burial

Download or read book Sky Burial written by Xinran and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002 Xinran’s Good Women of China became an international bestseller, revealing startling new truths about Chinese life to the West. Now she returns with an epic story of love, friendship, courage and sacrifice set in Chinese-occupied Tibet. Based on a true story, Xinran’s extraordinary second book takes the reader right to the hidden heart of one of the world’s most mysterious and inaccessible countries. In March 1958, Shu Wen learns that her husband, an idealistic army doctor, has died while serving in Tibet. Determined to find out what happened to him, she courageously sets off to join his regiment. But to her horror, instead of finding a Tibetan people happily welcoming their Chinese “liberators” as she expected, she walks into a bloody conflict, with the Chinese subject to terrifying attacks from Tibetan guerrillas. It seems that her husband may have died as a result of this clash of cultures, this disastrous misunderstanding. But before she can know his fate, she is taken hostage and embarks on a life-changing journey through the Tibetan countryside — a journey that will last twenty years and lead her to a deep appreciation of Tibet in all its beauty and brutality. Sadly, when she finally discovers the truth about her husband, she must carry her knowledge back to a China that, in her absence, has experienced the Cultural Revolution and changed beyond recognition. . .

Book Transaction Management Support for Cooperative Applications

Download or read book Transaction Management Support for Cooperative Applications written by Rolf A. de by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transaction Management Support for Cooperative Application is a comprehensive report on a successful international project, called TRANSCOOP, carried out from 1994 to 1997 by a group of European scientists. But the book is also much more than that, namely, an ambitious attempt to integrate Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Workflow Management Systems (WFMS), and Transaction Processing (TP) technologies. The very term {\em cooperative transactions} is in itself contradictory. Cooperation technologies, such as CSCW, aim at providing a framework for information exchange between cooperating (human) participants. In contrast, traditional transaction technologies allow concurrent users to operate on shared data, while providing them with the illusion of complete isolation from each other. To overcome this contradiction, the TRANSCOOP researchers had to come up with a new and original notion of correctness of concurrent executions, based on controlled exchange of information between concurrent users. Merging histories in accordance with prespecified commutativity rules among concurrent operations provides transactional guarantees to activities such as cooperative designing, which until now had to be carried out sequentially. As an interesting consequence, it also provides a basis for management of consistency between disconnected or mobile users who operate independently and yet, must occasionally reconcile their work with each other.

Book excerpt: The book that you are considering buying is nothing short of a VIP Pass to Enlightenment, written by the UFC's most infamous and feared destroyer of men-Chael P. Sonnen. Backwoodsmen and unlearned folk call him the Walking Thesaurus. His contemporaries have bestowed upon him the title Sir Sonnen. And those dwelling in the forgotten, forlorn jungles south of the equator reverently refer to him as filho da puta, a term Sonnen personally deciphered using his mastery of linguistics. It means, simply, "the Great and Humble Bearer of Knowledge." In the coming pages, Sonnen's commentary and tales of heroic adventure will initiate you into the world of superhuman greatness. Allow him to carry you like a frail damsel through the world of professional mixed martial arts as he cuts weight, deals with moronic cornermen, expresses his disdain for focus mitts and punching in general, gets his face rearranged, and finds support and encouragement from fans. Permit him to cleanse your mind's palate and teach you the truth about history, politics, endangered species, cinema, terrorists, music, particle accelerators, and his plans for creating a Chaelocracy, which translates as "a Better Earth." Shower him with praise as he takes you into his manly mitts like a lump of clay and reshapes you in his own likeness. Like all men of myth and legend, Sonnen strives for the betterment of the human race. Prometheus brought us fire; Dana White brought us the modern-day gladiator; and Chael P. Sonnen now brings us the step-by-step guide to being a great human being and patriot. Purchase this book; learn how the world really works from the perspective of a man who has been face-to-face with presidents, wardens, dignitaries, judges, kings and queens, and athletic commissions; and find out if you have what it takes to awaken from your progressive nightmare. There is no better day to stop being you and start trying to be Chael P. Sonnen. The time has come for The Voice of Reason. Chael Sonnen is the best trash-talker in all of sports. -Jim Rome Host of The Jim Rome Show I've never seen anything like it. He's the best thing since Muhammad Ali -Dana White UFC President

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lofts today come in all shapes and sizes and a host of interior styles, from raw and salvaged to sleek and sophisticated. What makes a loft a loft is no longer simply quantifiable in floor area alone but has to do with more fundamental qualities of planning and design, qualities equally applicable in more conventional surroundings. New Loft Living presents the latest take on the loft ideal, with a selection of new and innovative converted spaces from some of the most highly regarded architects and designers in Europe and the USA. Part 1: Space Planning examines the various structural ways to exploit volume and maximize the sense of space. It also looks at ways to balance open areas with more private enclosures with the use of freestanding pods and screens. Part 2: Decor and Design illustrates how loft spaces allow you to break free from the constraints of conventional decorating and gives comprehensive information on suitable finishes, materials and furnishings: everything from glass blocks and resin floors to mosaic. It shows how to make the most of focal points and features, and reveals the effectiveness of devices such as high-tech artificial lighting and photomurals.Part 3: Zones looks at patterns of use and explains how fully to exploit the space at your disposal, whatever your circumstances. Clever storage solutions free up space for everyday activities, while ingenious transformable fittings allow you to adapt space for different needs. Interspersed throughout are approximately 15 case studies, complete with floor plans, which offer insight into different spatial arrangements.
