Book excerpt: Painting and Publishing as Cultural Industries, 1580-1800 addresses how a small country like the Dutch Republic could become a major player in the creation of cultural goods during the Golden Age. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative sources from art history and book history, Claartje Rasterhoff traces the evolution of the painting and publishing industries from modest trades to booming industries. Informed by studies on cultural industries, she focuses on the role of industrial organization in shaping patterns of growth and innovation. Much like their present-day counterparts, early modern Dutch cultural industries were spatially concentrated, highly networked, and institutionally embedded. This distinct organizational structure helped to reduce uncertainty in the market and stimulated the commercial and creative potential of painters and publishers, for a century at least. Dutch painters and publishers had catered to their markets so rapidly and in such variety, that the exceptional levels of output, quality, and innovation accomplished during the first half of the seventeenth century could not be sustained. As producers came to face saturated domestic markets, they took to limiting risks and strenghtening their distribution and marketing activities. It was he who in the beginning urged me to venture upon this course of study and whose encouragement helped me in moments of de spondency. The high standard which, with his keen and critical judgment, he set for his own work, was an example to me, and I shall strive to maintain it in my future studies. Not only did he help me to lay the foundation of my knowledge of archive science, but he was also my guide in a field new to me in many respects, that of Asian maritime trade. His wide knowledge of medieval European trade in the Baltic area led me to compare and contrast the two worlds of East and West and thus helped me to obtain a deeper insight into the differences and similarities between the various problems involved. Book excerpt: The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as The Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company' trading - its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships' movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ingored, smaller vessels. Parthesius's research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail - and continue its profitable trade - the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Combining the best of maritime and social history, this book will change our understanding of the commercial dynamics of the most successful economic organization of the period.

This history begins around 1930 with the studio of the Philips Physics Laboratory and the plans for the Philips pavilion at Expo 58 in Brussels. The goal was a lightand- sound demonstration for the general public, but the involvement of Le Corbusier, Iannis Xenakis and Edgard Varèse gave this project a highly avant-garde turn. The result, Poème électronique, was considered by many to be much more experimental than the music of the research laboratory. In 1960 Philips divested itself of the studio. It was absorbed into a new studio at Utrecht University, where Gottfried Michael Koenig became artistic director in 1964. Tazelaar also looks in detail at the influence wielded by the Contact Organization for Electronic Music during this period. -- Publisher.

Most began studying at Leiden University, then went to Amoy to study southern Chinese dialects. Their main functions were translating Dutch law into Chinese, advising the courts on Chinese law and checking Chinese accounts books, later also regulating coolie affairs. Actually their services were not always appreciated and there was not enough work for them; later many pursued other careers in the Indies administration or in scholarship. This study also analyses the three dictionaries they compiled. Based on a wealth of primary sources, it gives a fascinating picture of personal cross-cultural contacts.
