Book excerpt: "Die Kettner Briefe" consists of 39 letters exchanged between Franz Kettner and his family in Germany from 1850 to 1875. The letters, printed in German with their English translations, read like a good adventure novel with each letter providing a much anticipated new chapter. The story is enhanced by photographs, both old and new, and other supporting documents. Read the "Die Kettner Briefe" to learn of hardships and dangers of frontier life faced by Franz in the Texas Hill Country. Franz was an early farmer and stockman in Comal, Gillespie, and Mason Counties. He participated in several campaigns with the Texas Rangers and later, during the Civil War, was a member of the Minute Men (local militia). He ran a store and post office in Castell. He hauled freight from the Texas coast to Fort Mason. He was a sheriff in both Gillespie and Mason Counties and was the Tax Accessor. Franz held the prestigious position of Cattle and Hide Inspector during the era of large cattle drives from Mason County.

Book Franz Liszt

Download or read book Franz Liszt written by Oliver Hilmes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was an anomaly. A virtuoso pianist and electrifying showman, he toured extensively throughout the European continent, bringing sold-out audiences to states of ecstasy while courting scandal with his frequent womanizing. Drawing on new, highly revealing documentary sources, including a veritable treasure trove of previously unexamined material on Liszt’s Weimar years, best-selling author Oliver Hilmes shines a spotlight on the extraordinary life and career of this singularly dazzling musical phenomenon. Whereas previous biographies have focused primarily on the composer’s musical contributions, Hilmes showcases Liszt the man in all his many shades and personal reinventions: child prodigy, Romantic eccentric, fervent Catholic, actor, lothario, celebrity, businessman, genius, and extravagant show-off. The author immerses the reader in the intrigues of the nineteenth-century European glitterati (including Liszt’s powerful patrons, the monstrous Wagner clan) while exploring the true, complex face of the artist and the soul of his music. No other Liszt biography in English is as colorful, witty, and compulsively readable, or reveals as much about the true nature of this extraordinary, outrageous talent.

Book Objects and Pseudo Objects

Download or read book Objects and Pseudo Objects written by Bruno Leclercq and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of science, logic, mathematics, and psychology in the 19th century made it necessary to introduce a growing number of new entities, of which classical empiricism and strong extensionalism were unable to give a wholly satisfying account. One of the major issues confronting the 20th century philosophers was to identify which of these entities should be rationally accepted as part of the furniture of the world and which should not, and to provide a general account of how the latter are nevertheless subject to true predication. The 13 original essays collected in this volume explore some of the main approaches to this issue in the 20th century, including Brentano, Meinong, Husserl, Carnap, Frege, Twardowski, Kotarbinski, Nicolai Hartmann, and realist phenomenologists.

Download or read book The history of the English novel written by Ernest A. Baker and published by SEVERUS Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceding that the latter half of the 18th century holds little of true literary value besides the works of Fanny Burney, Ernest Baker nevertheless finds that the period "teems with interest" the public's demand for fiction and the rapidly increasing production of novels reshaped the book market, and "writers who were poor novelists but persons of strong views or feelings" spawned various subgenres worthy of exploration.
