Book The Brahmo Samaj and the Shaping of the Modern Indian Mind

Download or read book The Brahmo Samaj and the Shaping of the Modern Indian Mind written by David Kopf and published by Atlantic Publishers & Distri. This book was released on 1979 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the forerunners of Indian modernization, the community of Bengali intellectuals known as the Brahmo Samaj played a crucial role in the genesis and development of every major religious, social, and political movement in India from 1820 to 1930. David Kopf launches a comprehensive generation- to-generation study of this group in order to understand the ideological foundations of the modern Indian mind. His book constitutes not only a biographical and a sociological study of the Brahmo Samaj, but also an intellectual history of modern India that ranges from the Unitarian social gospel of Rammohun Roy to Rabindranath Tagore's universal humanism and Jessie Bose's scientism. From a variety of biographical sources, many of them in Bengali and never before used in research, the author makes available much valuable information. In his analysis of the interplay between the ideas, the consciousness, and the lives of these early rebels against the Hindu tradition, Professor Kopf reveals the subtle and intricate problems and issues that gradually shaped contemporary Indian consciousness. What emerges from this group portrait is a legacy of innovation and reform that introduced a rationalist tradition of thought, liberal political consciousness, and Indian nationalism, in addition to changing theology and ritual, marriage laws and customs, and the status of women. Book Ruling Through Education

Download or read book Ruling Through Education written by Tim Allender and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the history of colonial education in the Punjab, the large province of Hindustan divided today between India and Pakistan, this book argues that the British-controlled system of colonial education in Hindustan failed well before the national movement challenged foreign educational practice in the early twentieth century. Drawing on extensive archival research in Great Britain, India and Pakistan, Allender shows how the early ideas of British officials generated a highly imaginative village system of schooling. Attempting to accommodate local language and religious sensitivities, this broad-based scheme offered possibilities to improve the lot of village boys. The revolt of 1857, and a well-meaning crusade against female infanticide, prompted officials to drop this scheme and to content themselves with city based schools. Christian missionary tensions with the government over their evangelising agenda also meant that their focus on poor students was limited to a mere 17 years. These developments helped to create a strong indigenous voice for educational innovations and change, notably represented in the Arya Samaj. In 1882, the Hunter Commission marked a recognition over the previous 30 years made it impossible for them to reach the general population with an effective European-led scheme of education.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this work discusses the development in Dacca of western-style municipal organization and its financial and practical problems and also explores the economic transition of the city after 1840. It is one of the few urban studies which carries through from the ‘old order’ to the new administrative towns of British rule and attempts to show what happened to the communities of townsmen in the period of adaptation. It casts new light on the function and organization of Indian urban societies in the colonial period, on the transfer of western institutions and the organization and composition of Bengali trade outside Calcutta.
