Download or read book Exploring Big Historical Data The Historian s Macroscope Second Edition written by Shawn Graham and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, more and more kinds of historical data become available, opening exciting new avenues of inquiry but also new challenges. This updated and expanded book describes and demonstrates the ways these data can be explored to construct cultural heritage knowledge, for research and in teaching and learning. It helps humanities scholars to grasp Big Data in order to do their work, whether that means understanding the underlying algorithms at work in search engines or designing and using their own tools to process large amounts of information.Demonstrating what digital tools have to offer and also what 'digital' does to how we understand the past, the authors introduce the many different tools and developing approaches in Big Data for historical and humanistic scholarship, show how to use them, what to be wary of, and discuss the kinds of questions and new perspectives this new macroscopic perspective opens up. Originally authored 'live' online with ongoing feedback from the wider digital history community, Exploring Big Historical Data breaks new ground and sets the direction for the conversation into the future.Exploring Big Historical Data should be the go-to resource for undergraduate and graduate students confronted by a vast corpus of data, and researchers encountering these methods for the first time. It will also offer a helping hand to the interested individual seeking to make sense of genealogical data or digitized newspapers, and even the local historical society who are trying to see the value in digitizing their holdings.

Download or read book Incunabula in Transit written by Lotte Hellinga and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half a million books printed in the fifteenth century survive in collections worldwide. In Incunabula in Transit Lotte Hellinga explores how and where they were first disseminated. Propelled by the novel need to market hundreds of books, early printers formed networks with colleagues, engaged agents and traded Latin books over long distances. They adapted presentation to suit the taste of distinct readerships, local and remote. Publishing in vernacular languages required typographical innovations, as the chapter on William Caxton’s Flanders enterprise demonstrates. Eighteenth-century collectors dislodged books from institutions where they had rested since the sales drives of early printers. Erudite and entertaining, Hellinga’s evidence-based approach, linked to historical context, deepens understanding of the trade in early printed books.

Download or read book Rembrandt Studies written by Julius Samuel Held and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated collection of essays represents the fruit of a life-long occupation with Rembrandt on the part of one of the foremost authorities on Dutch and Flemish art. Concentrating on either a single painting or an iconographically related group of paintings, Julius S. Held examines the processes, some perhaps even unconscious, that underlie Rembrandt's highly personal works. To his previously published essays--"Aristotle," "The "Polish' Rider," "Juno," "Rembrandt and the Book of Tobit," and "Rembrandt: Truth and Legend"--the author adds an essay on the theme of the Beggar, another one on subjects involving words spoken, and a new introduction discussing some current trends in Rembrandt criticism. From reviews of the previous edition: "There is a freshness of approach in Professor Held's writing, and his concern with interpretation rather than connoisseurship succeeds in stimulating the reader to think about the paintings, however familiar they may be to us." --Christopher White, Apollo "To look at [these paintings] under Held's very expert guidance is to penetrate more deeply into the problems of Rembrandt's oeuvre than if we plough through the bulkier monographs." --E. H. Gombrich, The New York Review of Books
