Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decades many books and essays have been written on phenomeno logical psychology. Some of these publications are historical in character and were designed to give the reader an idea of the origin, meaning, and function of phenom enological psychology and its most important trends. Others are theoretical in nature and were written to give the reader an insight into the ways in which various authors conceive of phenomenological psychology and how they attempt. to justify their views in light of the philosophical assumptions underlying their conceptions. Finally, there are a great number of publications in which the authors do not talk about phenomenological psychology, but rather try to do what was described as possible and necessary in the first two kinds of publications. Some of these at tempts to do the latter have been quite successful; in other cases the results have 1 been disappointing. This anthology contains a number of essays which I have brought together for the explicit purpose of introducing the reader to the Dutch school in phenomenological psychology. The Dutch school occupies an important place in the phenomenological move ment as a whole. Buytendijk was one of the first Dutch scholars to contribute to the field, and for several decades he remained the central figure of the school.

Download or read book Interpreting Religion written by George Alfred James and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of what has been termed the ""phenomenology of religion"" has been the subject of controversy and confusion within the academic study of religion since the early 1950s. Here George Alfred James attempts to clarify the subject through an exploration of the self-understanding of three of its key exponents: Pierre Dniel Chantepie de la Saussaye, W. Brede Kristensen, and Gerardus van der Leeuw. Though the three are widely acknowledged to have had a decisive impact on the phenomenology of religion, they are not widely studied. James deals with each of the three in turn and shows how each saw his efforts as at once a-historical, a-theological, and anti-reductive. According to James, this family of phenomenological approaches can contribute a wealth of insight to the study of religion today. The author offers a groundbreaking challenge to the received image of the phenomenology of religion as an approach of merely historical interest. He shows that phenomenology of religion is not a development or application of the philosophical method initiated by Edmund Husserl, but an approach to religion that has its own claim to authenticity as a discipline distinct from theology, from the history of religions, and from contemporary social scientific approaches to religion. Phenomenology of religion is revealed to be a radical departure from contemporary efforts to understand the religious dimension of human nature and culture. Interpreting Religion reveals how the exponents of the phenomenology of religion were concerned with avoiding doctrinaire interpretations on the one hand and reductionism on the other, and explains their varying strategies for achieving this goal. It also shows how successive efforts toward a phenomenological approach to religion have addressed the weaknesses, and built upon the insights, of earlier efforts of this nature. The book advocates a reexamination of the phenomenology of religion in the light of recent developments in post-modern theology, literary criticism, and philosophy. George Alfred James lives in Denton, Texas, where he is associate professor of philosophy and religion studies at the University of North Texas. He has contributed articles to a variety of publications, including The Journal of Religion and The Encyclopedia of Religion.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women and Gender in the Early Modern Low Countries, 1500-1750 brings together research on women and gender across the Low Countries, a culturally contiguous region that was split by the Eighty Years War into the Protestant Dutch Republic in the north and the Spanish-controlled, Catholic Hapsburg Netherlands in the south. The authors of this interdisciplinary volume highlight women's experiences of social class, as family members, before the law, and as authors, artists, and patrons, as well as the workings of gender in art and literature. In studies ranging from microhistories to surveys, the book reveals the Low Countries as a remarkable historical laboratory for its topic and points to the opportunities the region holds for future scholarly investigations"--

Download or read book From Darwin to Weil written by Petra Broomans and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2009 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural transmitters, or mediators, play an important role in the transmission and reception of literature. What is a cultural transmitter? What role do women play in the field of cultural transfer and transmission and how active were women in developing the profession of cultural transmitter? In this volume, the first in the series Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (CTaT), a select group of scholars from various disciplines from Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandinavia discuss the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective. The importance of the ideologies women cultural transmitters themselves entertained concerning the reception of literature is also investigated. The essays demonstrate that religious, political and economic structures played guiding roles in the lives of many women cultural transmitters. Therefore, they dealt with feminism and sociopolitical issues, sexual politics, the practice of translation (to earn money), the role of women in society and how women were raised, the position of women writers and critics and religion. Examples of other fields in which women cultural transmitters were involved include science and philosophy. Furthermore, the discusssion of the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective reveals that religion, nation, womanhood and entrepreneurship are important aspects to be incorporated into any definition of a cultural transmitter. While the focus is on Scandinavia and the Dutch-speaking region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the positions and activities of the cultural transmitters discussed can be 'translated' into other language areas and 'transferred' to other periods.
